Class Blog 22/06/2018 P6b

Today we painted our volcanoes and they look amazing. We are looking forward to trying our experiment.

Today we looked at a map of the World Rivers. We used the Chrome books to research where in the world the rivers are and glued our answers to a world map.

The orange group in maths have been learning the meaning of equivalents.

The yellow group have been learning how to tell the time using 12 and 24 hour time.

Primary 6B Class Blog Friday 8th June 2018

This week we have been learning about what happens when a baby grows up to a toddler and the developmental milestones they go through.

We had sports day on Thursday. It was very fun.  We did lots of different activities like javelin throwing and racing space-hoppers!

In maths the white group have been learning about money and bank cards (credit cards). The orange group have been converting units of measurement using a decimal point.  The yellow group have begun a new topic on 12 and 24 hour time.

In science we have been learning about different animals and how they communicate. They can use seismic, electric, auditory, touch, olfactory, visual.

On Wednesday the nursery had their sports day and a number of the pupils did an excellent job of helping the nursery pupils.

In writing we have been learning how to write instructions. Today we wrote instructions on a topic of our own choice.  We were to include; an introduction, put it in chronological order, use sub headings and headings, imperative verbs, list of equipment and a conclusion.

This week we have been researching a volcanic eruption so that we can use the information to create a drama script which we will perform.

P6B Class Blog Friday 1st June 2018

This week has been an extremely short week but it was a fun week.

We held a heat for the relay race next week on sports day. A boy and girl from each house in p6 have been selected to represent their house.

In science we were listening to each other’s presentations. We took notes on a different types of communication which animals use and shared these with each other.

In social studies we used the chrome books to access Google maps as well as maps of Britain to identify rivers within Britain and the seas surrounding Britain. We had to identify features of the map in order to locate the correct river.

In P.E we did 5 bat cricket with Mr. McMillan. With Mrs. McGreggor we worked on our javelin skills.

Neilston Cycle Group came to our school on Wednesday and held a bike maintenance workshop for us and then led some bike games for us.

In writing this week we wrote a persuasive argument about a topic of our choice. We were to back up our opinions with reason and evidence as well as using persuasive techniques.

Some pupils presented their Natural Disaster homework task.

P6b Class Blog Thursday 24th May.

This week we had our Bike-ability tests and are now waiting to hear how we did.

In Social Studies this week we gave our solo talks about Natural Disasters. We had talks about tsunamis, volcanos, forest fire, flooding and limnic eruption. We really enjoyed listening to each other, especially to Omar’s which was the funniest.

In PE we were improving our tennis skills and finished by playing matches with each other.

In Maths the Orange group have been learning about percentages of numbers. The White group have been learning percentages and fractions of amounts. The Yellow group have been calculating volume of cubes and cuboids.

On Monday, we went up to Eastwood High School to do maths relays as well as maths games.

In Science we have started presenting information about different types of communication.

 

P6b Class Blog Friday 18th May 2018

In science we have been learning how different animals communicate.

In maths this week, we did the sumdog competition. We used the chrome books, we tried using our own devices but sadly these did not work!

In writing we created our own imaginative stories. As well as writing interesting stories with a beginning, middle and end we were to use lots of VCOP, check that our grammar, punctuation and spelling was all correct.

In P.E we continued developing our tennis skills. We also played tennis games (1v) with the winner being the first to three points.

On Monday we went to Blair Drummond Safari Park. At the park we went through the safari park and saw a variety of animals (including lions), then we went on the boats to chimp island, after that we watched the sea lion show which was full of incredible tricks.  We then had lunch and played in the park before going to the birds of prey show and then getting the bus home!

In Bikeability we went out on the road and were practising; safe starts, safe stops, left turn from minor to major roads and major to minor, and right turns from major to minor roads and minor to major. Our assessments will be next week.

In Social Studies we were learning about the effect volcanoes have on people. We took notes then carried out research on the volcano that has erupted recently in Hawaii and gathered information about how people have been affected by it.

Primary 6B Class Blog Friday 11th May 2018

This week in maths the Orange group have been changing fractions into percentages, the yellow group having been calculating the volume of cuboids, the white group have been finding fractions and percentages of quantities.

In P.E with our specialist we were working on the triple jump. We worked on the hop first, then the skip then the jump before putting it all together and measuring the distance of each jump.

In writing we created persuasive arguments about whether or not animals should be kept in zoos. We looked at different persuasive techniques and arguments both for and against zoos.

In science we moved on to learning about sound and how it travels. We learned about the molecules in the air and how they move to form vibrations.

In Bikeability we were on the roads practising our left and right hand turns as well as our safe starts and safe stops.

Next Monday we are going on a trip to Blair Drummond which we are very excited about.

In R.M.E we have been learning about Buddhism. This week we looked at the Eightfold Path.

In ICT we have been learning about coding. We have been working through coding tasks which increase in difficulty as we progress.

Primary 6b Class Blog Friday 4th May 2018

May the 4th be with you!

This week we had Crookfur’s Got Talent! 3 members of Primary 6B, Alexander, Yusuf and Lewis, performed a comedy show.  They had the whole school laughing.  The winner of the talent show was Ellis in P4.

In P.E with Mrs. McGreggor we did shot put. We had to get in to the Usain Bolt pose to throw the ball.  With Mr. McMillan we have been working on our tennis skills.  We had to hit targets, play soft, controlled passes to each other and rally with each other over the net.

In maths, the orange group have been working on decimals; using the four operations, rounding and problem solving. The yellow group have been using the formula v=lxbxh to find the volume of cuboids.  The white group have been working with fractions and decimals and finding percentages and fractions of amounts.

In writing we have been developing our knowledge and use of persuasive language and techniques. We wrote advertisements to persuade readers to go on holiday to our chosen destination.

In our Social Studies topic we have begun researching a volcano that erupted and the effect it had on people and the landscape.

In music we were learning about dynamics. We played various percussion instruments to create sounds.  We watched April Showers from the film Bambi without music and discussed how the sounds in the film would get louder and softer as the rain got heavier and lighter.  We then created our own music along to the film in time with the thunderstorm.

This week we have had Prefect responsibilities, we will also have these next week. After that we can apply to be Prefects in P7.

P6b Class Blog Friday 20th April 2018

This week we started Bikeability. We practised our safe starting and stopping.  We then had four stations; one station was a path which we had to steer through, one where we had to practise riding with one hand (we had to high five and throw hoops on to targets), one station where we practised our left turn, and another station where we had to slalom between cones.  We will be in the playground next week and then we will be out on the roads.

In writing we have been working on poetry. This week we wrote our own rap about going to a fair.  We had to describe what we would see, hear, smell, touch, taste and how we would feel.  We thought about rhyming words and rhythm.

In ICT we have started coding.

In maths the orange group have continued working on decimal fractions. The white group have started probability.  The yellow group have been measuring volume.

In PE we were developing our long jump skills with Mrs. McGreggor. With Mr. McMillan we have been continuing our tennis skills; working on racquet control.

In science we started a new topic, learning about food chains. We learnt what a food chain is and that there are three parts; it starts with plants and then the creatures and animals that eat the plants and finally the creatures and animals that eat those creatures.

Our new topic in class is volcanoes and natural disasters. We learnt about the different types of volcanoes; active, dormant and extinct.  We also learnt about the different parts of a volcano and how volcanoes are formed.

P6b Class Blog Friday 23rd March 2018

In writing we wrote a descriptive recount of a snow day. We focussed on our use of VCOP and describing the senses.

In maths the white group have been developing their skills in data handling. They have been going around the classes this week to collect data for their survey.  The orange group have been working with decimal numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing amongst other challenges.  The yellow group have been identifying numbers up to one million and multiplying and dividing numbers by 10/100/1000 etc.

In P.E with Mrs. McGreggor it was our last week of doing basketball with the pupils at Eastwood High School. With Mr. McMillan we worked on our tennis skills.  Particularly forehand and backhand and controlling the movement of the tennis ball.

In science we were continuing our taste test. Everyone had a turn of trying food whilst they held their nose as this made it harder to smell and therefore identify the food.  We learnt that our smell and taste works together.

In social studies we had our vote and the Peace Party and the Nation Party tied with the most votes. We also had a discussion about Devolved powers and what we think the Scottish government could do to improve their actions and support in these areas.  We also created our own questions about the Scottish Parliament and used these in a game board.

In French we were learning about sports/ hobbies. We played team games to learn our vocabulary.  We also had a visitor, Ben, from France who spoke to us about their traditions and culture.

In health we have been learning about substance misuse. Today we made a booklet using our notes and what we had learnt, to inform others of alcohol, smoking and drugs.

We have been working on inferring meaning from texts (inference skills). We had to infer meaning from the text to answer questions and describe the characters.

 

P6b Class Blog Friday 16th March 2018

In maths the yellow group have started place value, working with numbers up to one million. The white group have been interpreting charts and graphs and are planning their own survey.  The orange group have been working with decimal numbers.

In Health and Wellbeing we have been learning about substance misuse. We have learnt about addictive substances, the dangers of alcohol, smoking and drugs and how they are portrayed in the media.

We had a K’nex challenge where we had to build a bridge to certain specifications. Ben and Oscar have been selected from our class to represent the school in a K’nex competition.

 

In P.E we did stations with Mr. McMillan as the stage has been up in the hall this week, we also played boccia. With the high school pupils we were developing our basketball skills.

In science we were doing blind-folded tasting. We had to guess what food we were tasting and describe how it tasted.

For Big Writing we wrote an imaginative story about walking into a scary house. We focussed on the five senses, how we would feel and VCOP.

In language today, we were learning about metaphors. We discussed what they are, why they are used, looked at some examples, matched up metaphors and translated metaphors.
