  • Watch a Film – Openculture (http://www.openculture.com/freemoviesonline) has a great list of 1150 free films you can watch online right now. If you have an eligible library card you might also have access to Kanopy (https://www.kanopy.com/ ) which offers thousands more film options free.
  • Watch a Documentary – there are a few websites which give you access to free documentaries

  • Tour Ancient Rome – (https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/rome) while we might not be able to travel right now – current technology means you can explore other cities and even other times on-line. You could take a virtual tour of ancient Rome which takes you through its ancient monuments
  • Learn to Paint – if you enjoy painting pick up your brushes – 403 episodes of The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross have been added to YouTube
  • Get a PenPal – connect with people around the world and see how lockdown is playing out in other countries (or talk about the weather!) Find penpals online (penpal world.com) – and get started straight away.
  • Cook Something New – there are great recipes on line, even if resources are limited. Jack Munroe’s recipes https://cookingonabootstrap.com/ (are created for people on strict budgets) and Miguel Barclay (YouTube) is best known for his pound meals.
  • Learn a Language – Always wanted to speak another language – lockdown gives you the opportunity to learn a new language or brush up your vocabulary on one you’ve allowed to get rusty.
  • Go to the Theatre – recorded performances are nothing new but platforms like Marquee (marquee.tv) are offering free trials – so you can see if it’s something you’d like to watch in the future.
  • Solve a Mystery – Enjoy solving mysteries? There are plenty of on-line communities like Reddit’s (reddit.com)  Unresolved Mysteries where mystery fans get together to swap theories and combine information to try to get to the bottom of cold cases
  • Start a Blog – do you have a great indoor hobby you could share? Interests in pastimes such as cooking and board games has, unsurprisingly, gone up recently. If your hobbies are trending why not set up a Blog and share your knowledge? You can set up a WordPress (wordpress.com) account and blog for free.
  • Have a Kitchen Dance Party – you can have too much screen time – maybe workouts aren’t your thing – make up a playlist of your favourite songs and dance your way around the kitchen – no-one’s watching!
  • Read or Listen to a Book – you could find something interesting on ManyBooks (https://manybooks.net ), or try out Audible for free (https://www.audible.com/ep/FreeListens)
  • Start a Virtual Bookclub – agree on free books and get together with friends, on-line, for a chat.
  • Board Games / Jigsaws / Adult Colouring Books – are all ways to get away from the screen and keep boredom at bay.
  • Join the library – Do you know about the library service’s latest online resource – Press Reader. It gives you FREE access to over 7,000 worldwide magazines and newspapers. You can filter by country, category and language. There are 500 UK magazines and 171 UK newspapers including all the daily tabloids and broadsheets.You can create an account and tailor your preferences but the more you use it, it will begin to tailor based on your reading. There are no restrictions on the number of times you can download titles, nor are there any restrictions on simultaneous downloads so you will always be able to download the title you want, when you want it.After 30 days, Pressreader will ask you to sign in again for the next 30 days access. Back issues are available for 90 days, although some publishers place restrictions on this.
