Main Idea – Supporting Details

After learning about the strategies for finding the main idea of a text we decided to look more closely at supporting  details.

In teams we read through sentences that provided supporting details linked to animal survival and matched them with the main idea.

We had to work together to cut out the sentences, listen to them carefully and then discuss which main idea they were linked to. It was challenging and fun!

Medicines

This afternoon we started our new health focus where we will be learning about medicines.

To start we discussed what medicines were and then we went on to work in groups to discuss the different ways medicines can be given.

We came up with lots of different ways including:

  • Injections
  • Tablets
  • Creams
  • Inhalers
  • Liquids

We are excited to learn about medicines and the different illnesses they can treat and prevent.

Hula Hoops

PE today revolved around hula hoops and the different games you can play with them.

We started with survivors.

Then we played puddles, it was a tense finale!

Next we had a shot at rolling our hoops.

Finally we had a shot at traditional hula hooping, Mrs Sobocinski needs to improve!

Main Idea

Our reading skill this week is Main Idea. Yesterday we learned some strategies for finding out the main idea from a text. They included:

  • Looking at the title and headings
  • Reading the first and last sentences or paragraphs
  • Searching for repeated information

Then we worked in groups to figure out the main idea of a collection of mini paragraphs using the strategies above.

Today we are applying our knowledge to an unseen text to see if we can use our new skills.
