P5i Step Back In Time

Pupils enjoyed a visit  from Darvel Telephone Museum this afternoon. P5i are a lot more knowledgeable about the invention of and improvements to the telephone thanks to Mr Flemmich,

who runs the museum. Children enjoyed the hands-on experience of touching and using the phones and seeing for themselves how  heavy they used to be. Hannah and Rueben can vouch for how heavy the first mobile phones were. They could hardly lift them!

Onthank was On Form in 2018!

As 2018 draws to a successful end, we wanted to celebrate all of our achievements so far in the current school session.

Some of our highlights include; launching our 60th Birthday celebrations, success at the Ayrshire Athletics Final and Swimming Gala, our DFS week, outdoor learning opportunities and class excursions.

Our P2 Nativity, P3 Carol Concert and P5-7 Greatest Show brought over 1,000 members of the Onthank community into our school and as we move into 2019 this is a testament to Onthank Primary being at the heart of the community.

P7 Performance at North West Community Event

Primary 7 pupils have been asked to perform as part of the North West Kilmarnock Community event on Thursday 6th December.

This event will be held in Onthank Primary School where there will be a display of different North West Community groups applying for funding for various different causes. Primary 7 pupils have put together a funding application in order to raise funds for our upcoming residential trip to Inverclyde Sports Centre.

We strongly encourage anyone to attend this event to vote for Onthank Primary’s bid.

For this event, children are allowed to vote so we would like to get as many children and parents to this event as possible.

Children will stay at school from 3pm and prepare for the performance which will be delivered at approx. 3.30pm. It is then asked that children are picked up by an appropriate adult at 4.30pm. This allows the children time to perform and then vote for our funding proposal. It would greatly appreciated if you could come in and vote for our funding proposal when you collect your child at 4.30pm. This would only take a few minutes and helps reduce the cost of our residential trip.

Could you please complete the below permission form to allow your child to attend this event.

Active Learning in P3

We are all enjoying being active in our learning!

Sometimes we learn best when we are cooperating with others, using interactive Maths materials, learning our phonemes through games and simply…having fun while learning!

P3C have been beginning to divide. They have been learning about the concept of sharing.

P3W have been consolidating various phonemes through rotational tasks.

P3 are doing a novel study on ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. We have been learning about owls, habitats, food webs and nocturnal animals.

We had a visit from ‘Owl Magic’. Davie brought 6 owls into the school. We were able to ask questions and we had the opportunity to hold an owl.

Christine who is a Ranger at Dean Park came to visit yesterday and she gave us even more information. We are all owl experts now.

‘No School Bells’ Trial

From Monday 19th November 2019 we are going to try having no school bells to signal the start and end of the school day. At 9am, pupils will not line up in the playground but instead will make their own way to their classroom similar to a ‘Wet Day’ routine. Teachers and our P7 perfects will guide our pupils to their class at 9am.

Pupils will also follow the same procedure at the end of break and at lunch.

The’ No School Bells’ trial is part of our DFS Award and also enables our school to become a more autism friendly environment.

P3 Welly Wednesday Phoneme Hunt

We had a very successful ‘Welly Wednesday’ phoneme hunt! We were looking for things which contained the phonemes ‘ck’ and ‘ai’.
We were very lucky to begin our hunt by spotting the most beautiful ‘rainbow’. By the end of the hunt we were very ‘mucky’ but we had so much fun!

P3 ‘Welly Wednesday’

On a Wednesday afternoon P3 will be participating in ‘Outdoor Learning’.

Today we got our wellies on and we went on a hunt for some Autumn leaves. We had so much fun!

Back in class we enjoyed an Art lesson using our favourite leaf. We had to study the markings and colours on the leaf.

Pupils should remember to bring wellies or outdoor shoes every Wednesday to allow them to participate.

P3 were excited to meet Barney the Dinosaur!

We were so lucky to have a visit from the ‘Dino Team’ today! Kevin entertained us with fun and games and some of us got to hold a real snake!

We also had a visit from Barney the T-Rex. We had to feed him and take him a walk. We also explored how tall a T-Rex would have been and how long it would have grown to be.

An exciting afternoon to celebrate all the work we did during our ‘Dinosaur’ topic!
