Rights Respecting Schools

Welcome to our Rights Respecting Schools page!

Meet the team!

New Cumnock Primary School is a  GOLD accredited Rights Respecting School.  This accreditation was awarded to our school by UNICEF, who are the world’s leading organisation for promoting the Rights of the Child.  Click this link to view the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child!

To ensure our school is continuing to promote and raise awareness of Children’s Rights, our Rich Task group meets twice a term.  We have been raising awareness of RRSA linked events such as “Children’s Rights Day” as well as getting our “Rights Blethers” established within classroom practise which is linked to our school “Right of the Fortnight” calendar. Every fortnight members of our Rich Task Group deliver a short presentation to the whole school at our Monday Get2Gethers to explain what our “Right of the Fortnight” Article focus is, we have lots of discussions, celebrations and complete activities based on that Article within class.

How can parents support their child to learn about the Convention at home?

  • Take the time to ask your child what he/she has learnt recently regarding Children’s Rights and how they may show respect for those rights.
  • Discuss the ideas learned in class, and try to think of examples from your own experiences, or from the media, of Rights being respected or denied.
  • Discuss how your child or your family can promote respect for Rights, or help those whose Rights have been violated.
  • Model using Rights Respecting language with your children.
  • Ask your child’s opinion on Children’s Rights.
