The Scottish Government’s policy, Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach, is aimed at ensuring that every child has the
opportunity to learn a modern language from Primary 1 onwards. Additionally, each child should have the right to learn a second modern language from P5 onwards.
Today’s children are growing up in a multilingual world and the ability to communicate effectively in social, academic and commercial settings is crucial if they are to play their full part as global citizens. The 1+2 approach to language learning establishes a new model for the learning and teaching of languages in Scottish schools for years to come.
At New Cumnock Primary we have built capacity for the teaching of two languages in addition to English. We deliver French as our L2 from Primary 1 – Primary 7 and German is delivered as our L3 from Primary 5 – Primary 7.
Research shows that younger learners are at a stage in their development where they are receptive to learning another language. Their motivation and enthusiasm are high, while their levels of inhibition are typically lower than at later stages. These factors mean that younger children often find it easier to mimic
correct pronunciation and experiment with new words and phrases in an unfamiliar language. We as teachers will build on children’s natural curiosity for sounds and words, and their strong desire to communicate.
Our staff use East Ayrshire progression frameworks which show us which vocabulary and activities we should use which are age and stage appropriate. This also allowed for progression across the stages.
Mrs McNulty is our Language Coordinator and is there to support staff and pupils if they have any questions or queries.
Languagenut is a subscription our school have paid for to support our delivery of Modern Languages. It is available for children in P4-7 and they each have their own login details and can access this out of school as well as in their class. There are fun games and challenges which can help develop their ability to listen, talk, write and read in the target language.
