RRS – Fun 31 Celebration

To commemorate Article 31 of Children’s Rights, pupils participated in our first Fun 31 afternoon where they explored their right to relax, play and culture.  Some of the activities they chose to take part in were pyjama parties, movies, construction activities and a VE Day street party! Children really enjoyed this experience and are already looking forward to celebrating this right in term 4.

Free Dance Sessions

We have a small amount of funding to provide after school dance sessions for Primary 7 pupils who already have an interest in dance from:

3.00pm-4.30pm Fridays: 24 April, 1/8/15/22/29 May, 5 June

With a final show in The Big Top, Dean Castle on Thursday 11th June, 7pm.

Sessions will take place in St Joseph’s Academy gym hall and we thought it might be a nice opportunity for a transition event, with children who have shared interest in dance socialising and dancing together. Children will have the opportunity to work with professional dance artists and take part in jazz and hip-hop sessions. It will mean that pupils will need to leave early from school on Friday to get to the venue for 3 and this would be a parental responsibility. All sessions are totally free.

If you would be happy with this being offered to your pupils then please share the link to the application:

Fun 31

Fun 31
On Tuesday, the pupils will be participating in a special activity to celebrate their right to play, relax and culture.  Article 31 of the UNCRC states that Duty Bearers (adults) must provide children with these opportunities.  Unlike Rainbow Reward, this activity cannot be taken away as children’s rights are inalienable, do not need to be earned and apply to everyone.
Your child has also has a say, under Article 12, as to what activity they will participate in.
We hope they all have an enjoyable experience celebrating this right and look out for photos on the blog or learner journals.

The Great Katsu Comeback: How P7 Made It Happen

Primary 7 recently took the initiative to address the disappearance of katsu curry from the school menu with Eddie P7 leading the petition. Eddie and the class worked together to write a clear and polite letter to the food service manager explaining how popular the meal had been, why pupils would like to see it return. Eddie even grabbed a clipboard and took his petition into the playground to get signatures from the other classes.
Primary 7 received a positive reply from the Food Service Manager, who thanked the class for taking the time to write and explained that pupil feedback is always valued when reviewing school meals; the manager noted that adding katsu curry back onto the menu is possible and confirmed that the kitchen team will work to bring it back in the next few weeks, while also praising Eddie’s leadership and the whole class for showing maturity, responsibility, and excellent communication in putting their request forward. This links to the Rights of the Child, as Primary 7 were exercising their right to express their views (Article 12) and have adults listen and take them seriously.

World of Work: Vattenfall visit MC Eco Committee

Last Thursday, we were very lucky to have Carol Kane from Vattenfall visit our school to speak to the Eco Committee and P5 about her company, the work they do and how this supports our community.

The pupils had a great time and enjoyed Carol’s presentation and were inspired to ask lots of interesting questions. Everyone loved experiencing learning in a different way through the VR equipment provided by Vattenfall which only added to the fun. We learned how advanced technology can work hand in hand with preserving nature around us and our planet.

The Eco Committee also had the chance on Friday to feedback at assembly to the whole school about their experience and what they had learned.

Articles 24 & 28 – the rights to be educated and preserve our planet and have a clean environment.

Here are some pictures of our afternoon…
