If you have still to return your child’s form or make payment for the trip, this must be done by 30th May or your child WILL NOT be able to attend the school trip and will therefore have to stay at home on the day of the trip as there will be no teaching provision on the day and this will be marked as an unauthorised absence.
We also have a number of lunch forms outstanding these MUST be returned to us by 30th May or we will be unable to arrange a packed lunch for your child from the kitchen should they require one.

Primary 6 – Term 4 curricular update
Term 4 P6 Class News
Welcome back to the final term; a busy and exciting one for Primary 6. During this term, P6 will prepare to transition into Primary 7 by applying and interviewing for Captain and Vice-Captain roles. P6 will also have the chance to apply to be a buddy to our new Primary 1’s in August. P6 will get the opportunity to meet the Pastoral Care team from St Joseph’s Academy. Probably the most exciting news is that rehearsals for the Summer Show have started. Alongside all these exciting events lots of learning and teaching will still be taking place as outlined below.
Literacy
Reading
This term our focus returns to fiction texts. P6 will read and study books appropriate to their level. Focus comprehension strategies this term is understanding the difference between fact and opinion, inference and author’s use of language. All pupils will complete a final fiction reading assessment at the end of the block of lessons.
Writing
The focus for the term ahead in terms of writing will be recall and recount writing. We will also look at writing using the format of a comic books. This only enriches the writing experience for the children whilst still achieving their learning outcomes.
Numeracy
This term P6 will focus on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. The pupils will experience level appropriate tasks and activities. The revision of multiplication tables will be encouraged across all groups. Topmarks games can help with the rigor of x-tables at home.
Beyond number numeracy will be taught by Mrs McCreadie and Miss Campbell. The class will learn all about angles, area, perimeter and measurement this term.
Health and Wellbeing
At the start of the term P6 will complete a mini topic on Food Hygiene. P6 will explore the practices and conditions necessary to ensure food is safe for human consumption and how to prevent contamination and foodborne illnesses.
Expressive Arts
The Expressive Arts are key to any child’s education, giving them opportunities to enjoy being creative and imaginative, expressing emotion, performing for different audiences, and being part of audiences for others, as well as learning key skills in Music, Art and Design, Dance and Drama. Our Summer Show ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ will incorporate all key areas of the Expressive Arts. A school show is a fantastic team-building exercise and it’s a great way for children to understand what’s possible when everyone pools their skills and weight.
RME
P6 will also continue to work on their Pope Francis Faith Award, focussing on Piety and Wisdom.
The children will be looking at Mary, mother of God in the month of May. The class will also be looking at God’s Loving Plan this term.
In Primary 6 we promote hard work and amazing attitudes. Our reward card system allows pupils to gain reward cards for Wonderful Work, Amazing Attitude, and being a ‘Superstar.’ When the pupils gain five cards, they can choose an individual reward. They can also choose to go for a class reward once everyone reaches five reward cards; this promotes teamwork within the class.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing support.
Take Care,
Mrs Terras and Mrs McCreadie
Dobbies Community Gardens
Our wonderful school was entered into Dobbies Community Gardens competition and won £50 as a runner up prize. This money will go towards the development of our sensory garden. A big thank you to Dobbies in Ayr
#teammc💙
Bank Holiday
Reminder that the school will be closed on Monday 5th May (Bank Holiday) and Tuesday 6th May (Staff In Service Day) and will re open for pupils on Wednesday 7th May at 9am.
P5 Term 4 Update
Primary 5 – Term 4
Welcome back to our final term in Primary 5! I hope you all had a restful break. This term promises to be a memorable one, filled with exciting opportunities for learning, performing, and reflecting on how far we’ve come. As always, I am proud of the enthusiasm and determination this class continues to show. Here’s a look at what’s coming up in Term 4.
Literacy
In writing, we’ll begin the term focusing on non-chronological reports, allowing pupils to develop their informative writing skills. Later, we’ll transition into recount writing in the form of newspaper reports, where students will learn how to report events with structure and clarity. These genres will give pupils the opportunity to apply grammar and punctuation skills in meaningful contexts.
For reading, we will enjoy our class novel Wilderness War while continuing to develop comprehension strategies through Bug Club texts. Spelling and grammar work will include focus on phonemes, pronouns, alphabetical order to the third letter, similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and compound words.
Listening and talking skills will be developed through preparations for our Summer Show, where pupils will have the chance to build confidence, teamwork, and expressive communication.
Numeracy
Number
We will begin the term with a focus on fractions, exploring both unit and non-unit fractions, as well as developing understanding of equivalent fractions. Pupils will engage in practical, hands-on activities to help them apply their knowledge in real-world contexts and build confidence in using fractions in a variety of situations.
Beyond Number
Later in the term, we will move on to patterns and relationships, where pupils will be encouraged to think logically and solve problems. This area supports the development of reasoning skills and a deeper understanding of how numbers and operations relate to one another
HWB
In PE, our focus will be on tennis and bowling throughout April and May, followed by outdoor games and physical challenges as we move into June. We’re especially looking forward to visiting the local bowling club, where pupils will have the chance to apply their skills in a new and exciting environment.
Pupils will also be setting personal fitness goals and working collaboratively through a variety of physical activities. Later in the term, we’ll cover important topics such as emergency situations and sexual health education, delivered in a sensitive and age-appropriate way.
R.E
In May, our focus will be on Mary, Mother of God. Pupils will learn about Mary’s life and her importance within the Catholic faith, exploring key moments such as the Annunciation and the Visitation. We’ll reflect on her qualities such as faith, courage, and compassion and how her example can inspire us in our own lives.
Through stories, discussion, art, and prayer, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of Mary’s role in the Church and in the lives of believers around the world. P5 will also look at how different cultures celebrate Mary and the ways in which she is honoured, especially during the month of May. This unit will support pupils in thinking about the values they admire and how they can show kindness, respect, and faith in their own actions.
Expressive Arts
Preparations are already underway for our Summer Show! Pupils will work together to rehearse, perform, and support the production using a variety of expressive skills. Pupils will also be working within show groups demonstrating skills such as, technical, creative, communication and problem solving.
IDL
This term, our IDL topic will be Local Politics and Community Involvement. Pupils will explore how local government functions, including the roles of councillors, the responsibilities of the local council, and how decisions are made that impact our daily lives.
We’ll look at real-life issues and case studies to help pupils understand the importance of civic engagement. Pupils will learn how their voices can contribute to change, and how to express opinions respectfully and effectively. Activities will include group discussions, debates, and creating a mock council meeting to practise decision-making and public speaking skills. The class will also explore how laws are made, the importance of voting, and the rights and responsibilities we all share as members of a community.
Technology
This term we’ll focus on creating digital presentations using PowerPoint and Sway. Pupils will build skills in layout, text formatting, and multimedia use, as well as how to share their work with others.
UNCRC
This term in Primary 5, we are focusing on some key UNCRC articles that highlight important rights for children. We’ll be learning about Article 24, which is all about the right to good health and healthcare, and linking it to Mental Health Awareness Week in May. In June, we’ll observe World Day Against Child Labour (Articles 32 and 35), and talk about the importance of protecting children from harmful work. We’ll also mark World Refugee Day (Articles 10 and 22), exploring the rights of refugee children and the importance of family reunification. Through insightful discussions and activities, children will understand why these rights are so important, not just here, but for children all over the world. It’s a great opportunity for P5 to reflect on the rights they have, and how they can be advocates for others too!
Upcoming Visit
We’re also excited about our upcoming trip to the Maritime Museum in May. This will be a fantastic opportunity to enhance our learning in a hands-on, engaging setting, and we’re looking forward to exploring the exhibits and discovering more about our maritime heritage.
As we approach the end of the year, I’d like to thank you for your continued support. It’s been a privilege to see how far this class has come, and I’m excited to finish the year strong with lots of opportunities for celebration and reflection. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Take care,
Miss Dorby

Primary 2 Curriculum Update Term 4
Primary 2 Blog Post (Term 4 Update)
Hello and welcome to our term 4 blog post. Primary 2 has been very busy over term 3, consolidating previous learning and building their skills in preparation for our summer term.
Literacy
Our focus in reading will be to continue to use word attack strategies and knowledge of phonemes covered to date, to decode unfamiliar words. We will also focus on inferential questioning and building our understanding of the deeper messages evident in our books whilst completing read-to-write tasks linked to these texts. We will continue to look at punctuation’s effect on texts, with a particular focus on speech. Pupils will then be able to identify this in our books and use some evidence of speech within our writing.
In writing, our focus will continue to build on written formation, the use of capital letters and full stops, and building confidence to write a few sentences independently, using our knowledge of common words, spelling strategies, and increased punctuation. Using our skills from descriptive writing, we will expand our sentences and add more detail when writing larger pieces of work, with narrative being our focus over this final term of primary 2.
Our spelling activities will continue to help children retain knowledge of previously taught phonemes and to build confidence in tackling trickier joined phonemes as we progress through term 4.
Numeracy
Our focus will move from multiplication to division, using our previous knowledge of fractions to help us with division strategies. We will frequently revisit place values to help us continue working with numbers up to 99 and 3-digit numbers beyond 100. Children will also consolidate learning in addition and subtraction and apply these strategies to bigger numbers. In Beyond Number, measure will be a focus as we begin to look at length, weight, and volume, as well as data handling, as we progress through term 4.
Health & Wellbeing
Our Paths Pupil of the Day program will continue in term 4, and our Pupil of the Day will receive many compliments. Children will also tackle more comfortable and uncomfortable emotions and develop strategies for managing situations in the playground or classroom when they experience these emotions. This links to our whole school Paths strategies, which help children recognise when they need help managing emotions or social situations.
In P.E., our sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In term 4, our focus will be on athletics and striking and fielding games. Children will have the opportunity to partake in some fun activities that support teamwork and focus on developing general fitness and skills in activities such as hurdles, running, and team races.
R.E
Our focus during R.E. sessions will be on Mary, Mother of God. We will also continue with themes of prayer, worship, and church routines. As always, we will also spend some time reading and discussing Bible stories relating to friendship and family.
Topic (IDL)
Our class topic this term will be mapping, with a particular focus on my school and my town. We will link this to our place in Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world to develop our understanding of geography and the globe. Our narrative writing will be developed through this topic, and with the return of ‘Plop’ to our classroom, he will help us navigate our local environment.
French
In French, we will continue to build our knowledge of greetings and numbers to 20. We will also discuss colours, days of the week and family members.
UNCRC
Children are reminded that our class charter and rules are linked to the UNCRC and by following the rules and charter agreements, we make sure everyone has a right to be healthy (24) learn (28) and play (31).
Homework will be sent out weekly on Monday as normal. Reading books will be attached to pupils’ accounts through our online Bug Club reading programme. These will be issued on Monday and should be returned to school on Friday.
We hope this is the start of another successful term and that the pupils are enjoying their return to school following the Easter break.
Take care,
Mrs Travers & Mrs Strachan
Primary 1 – Term 4 Curricular Update
I hope you all had a lovely Easter break. As we head into our final term, Primary 1 are ‘in training’ for moving up to Primary 2. As well as pushing on with new learning, we will be working hard to consolidate the learning that has taken place throughout the year.
Literacy
Phonics – Now that we have learnt all the sounds in the alphabet and are using these to make and break words, we are going to start learning the sounds made by two or more letters such as ‘sh’ ‘ch’ ‘th’ (joint phonemes).
Spelling – We will continue to practise the spelling of our tricky common words to ensure we can use these when writing sentences. We will learn some new words to add to our ever growing bank of vocabulary.
Writing – We are continuing to develop our skills in describing this term and using these skills to write reports about what we are learning in our topic.
Letter formation and hand writing will continue to be a focus to allow us to present our wonderful work as neatly as we can. Knowing how to form our letters automatically will help us to spell words with ease too.
Reading – Reading for information will be a focus this term. We will look at non-fiction texts and record the facts we learn. We will also continue to practise our decoding skills by reading all types of text whenever we can.
Numeracy – Primary 1
The focus for Numeracy this term will be number processes, measure and time.
P1 – We will keep strengthening our addition and subtraction skills this term by exploring how the two processes link together. We will be transferring these skills into our money activities and using them to solve word problems.
Time and Measure will also be a focus for us and will be linked to our topic. We will measure using non-standard units such as our hand spans, feet and cubes. We will also be exploring data handling to interpret information from graphs.
Health & Well-Being (HWB)
During our last term of PATHS lessons we will be introduced to some new emotions. We will explore each emotion in detail, thinking about how each emotion looks and feels and will consider whether it would be a ‘comfortable’ or ‘uncomfortable’ feeling.
We will also continue to reinforce our strategy of ‘Doing Turtle’ and will use our PATHS sessions to talk through our feelings about moving into our new class at the end of the year.
We will be learning about our amazing bodies and the correct names for each body part.
During PE we will be focusing on Athletics, Striking and Fielding Games and Dance.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR TAKING ALL EARRINGS OUT FOR GYM DAYS ON MONDAYS AND THURDAYS.
RE
During the month of May, we honour ‘Mary’. We will recite our special prayer of the ‘Hail Mary’ and revisit the stories of the Nativity, Annunciation and Visitation; giving special consideration to the role of Mary in each one. We will prepare our class altar in honour of Mary.
During this term, we will link our RE with our HWB through the teaching of ‘God’s Loving Plan.’ We will be thanking God for our amazing bodies! We will learn the names of the body parts and consider the choices we can make to help look after our bodies.
We will also talk about the needs of a new born baby; learning about the tasks and equipment required to look after a baby.
IDL (Topic)
Our topic this term will be ‘Sun, Moon and Stars’. We will compare day and night, exploring how these are created. We will also investigate our planet and its place in the solar system. During our topic we will also link with Literacy, Design Technology and Numeracy. There will be opportunities for reading and writing for information as well as practical activities involving measuring shadows and ordering planets by size.
UNCRC
We continue to make reference to our rights in class: being safe and having the opportunities to learn and play.
A fun and exciting summer term ahead with lots to look forward to!
Mrs Duff
P3 Curriculum update term 4
Welcome back! I hope that you all had a peaceful break over the Easter holidays. It is lovely to be back with the children as we start our final term of Primary 3. Here is an update on what we will be doing in term 4.
Literacy
We will be looking at a range of texts this term. We will start the term with story ‘The Trouble with Dragons’, which we will use as a whole class text to develop our prediction, summarising and ‘Find it, prove it’ comprehension strategies. We will also access Bug Club readers as we continue to work on decoding and fluency skills.
Spelling will take the form of active spelling activities and the children will experience phonemes and blends at their working level.
During writing, we will be focusing on persuasive and responsive writing. We will engage with a range of texts of each of these genres and will develop our note taking skills as well as the use of persuasive language. During all our writing activities, we will continue to have a focus on using our phonemes, and spelling strategies as well as the use of accurate punctuation.
Numeracy & Maths
We will build on our knowledge of division from last term as we explore fractions and develop our understanding of equal sharing. We will look at the notation and vocabulary associated with fractions and investigate where simple fractions lie on a number line. The children will participate in a daily number talk activity as we develop our confidence in the use of mathematical language to explain our thinking.
In beyond number, we will look at a range of methods of collecting, sorting and presenting data with Mrs Strachan.
Health and Wellbeing
This term we will continue with the PATHS programme, reflecting and discussing a range of emotions and what these might look and feel like.
At the beginning of our first term, we explored the UNCRC Rights of the Child, and together created a meaningful Class Charter to ensure that our classroom is a place where we feel safe and where we can learn and grow together. As we continue into term 4 we will refer back to this ensuring our Class Charter is relevant and ‘felt’ within our classroom. As a school community, we will focus on the following articles;
May – Mental Health Awareness Week – Article 24
June – World Day against Child Labour Articles 32 & 35
June – World Refugee Day – Articles 10 & 22
PE is on a Monday and Friday. This term we will be covering athletics and striking and fielding games.
Children will require PE kit and shoes each PE day. Please make sure your child is not wearing jewellery on these days as they will be unable to participate in the lesson for health and safety reasons. If your child cannot take part for any reason, please contact the school.
Religious Education
This term we will be continuing to learn a range of well-known prayers and will have opportunities each day for quiet prayer and reflection time.
We will reflect on the Easter Story, and in particular, we will focus on the story of ‘The Empty Tomb’ from the Gospel of Matthew, reflecting on the astonishment of the friends of Jesus when they heard that He has risen from the dead. As we move into the month of May, we will have a focus on Mary, we will create a May altar in our classroom and will reflect on Mary’s “yes” to God.
French
Through a range of songs, activities and games we will continue to develop confidence in counting and greetings, we will also look the similarities and differences between school here and in France.
IDL
We really enjoyed our farming topic last term, we will continue with some aspects of this topic; we have planted a range of fruit, vegetables and flowers which we will continue look after. We have been enjoying this first-hand experience of growing our own crops and we are hoping we will have some vegetables and fruit to harvest before the end of term!
This term, we will also take a closer look at our local community – in particular the groups and activities that take place around us.
Homework will be distributed on a Monday to be completed, and returned by Friday.
Keep an eye on the School App and your child’s Learning Journal profile for a snapshot of some of our wonderful learning!
Thank you as always for your support; I’m looking forward to another great term with our fantastic P3 children.
Mrs. MacKinnon.

Sunshine and Stories: Primary 6 Take Their Reading Outdoors
There’s something magical about a good book and a sunny day—and Primary 6 certainly discovered that today. They read the first chapters of their new reading books outside.
We’re looking forward to making outdoor reading a regular part of our week (weather permitting!). There’s no better way to combine a love of books with the joy of being outside.
BIG GARDEN CLEAR UP!
It is our big garden clear up today at 3 o’clock. If you can spare even half an hour, the school would really appreciate it. Hope to see you soon!!
P7 Transition Meeting

Thankyou
Important Information
We have had a number of parents contact us regarding their concerns in relation to potential “unwanted” visitors within childrens hair.
We have today sent home with every child information on how to look for and treat any potential issues with this.
We would therefore kindly ask ALL parents to check their childs hair over the weekend and treat accordingly should you be required to do so.
Thankyou
Mrs Fergusson
