Period poverty talks
At Mount Carmel we provide period poverty packs to all of our children and families, should they require it. These packs are readily available in the girls toilets as well as at our front foyer for all to access. With this comes inevitable questions from some of our children. Mrs McCreadie will have a chat with girls from Primary 5, 6 and 7 on Thursday 11th September. This will provide the girls the opportunity to ask questions in a safe and respectful environment. The girls will take part in this conversation in their class groups and it will not be done in a whole group setting. If you do not want your child to take part in these conversations, or you have any questions yourself on how this will take place, please call into the school office. Thank you!
Period Poverty
East Ayrshire Council launched a successful online ordering facility for free sanitary products in August 2020, which continues to grow.
This facility is open to anyone who needs products and is used by our communities and schools. A variety of products are available from single use products to reusable products.
Products are available for collection by anyone who needs them, or by anyone collecting on behalf of another person. Products will normally be available within toilet facilities of a building. Those who wish to access products can do so without having to ask a member of staff in a way that respects their dignity.
We provide free products in all our schools. Products are available in a way which respects the dignity of the pupils and can be accessed without having to ask a teacher. A reasonable choice will be available to pupils to ensure their needs can be adequately met whilst attending school. This will be monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Products are available during term time in at least one building of the school which is normally used by pupils. For most schools, products will be located within in the toilet facilities. Other schools may have products available in multiple locations.
Information on stocked venues can be accessed via the PickupMyPeriod App.
PickupMyPeriod allows users to enter a postcode or location to see where free period products are available in their area. Users can filter what products are available, check building opening hours and also access a wide range of advice and support on various topics including health and wellbeing, financial support, domestic abuse and addiction support.
The app can be downloaded via these links:
Parents in the Playground
P1 parents/carers will be permitted into the lower school playground until Friday of this week.
As of Monday of next week, no parents/carers will be allowed in the school playgrounds.
This will help the children to feel safe.
P7 Parent Information Evening
There will be a P7 parental information evening on 3rd September at 6pm in St. Joseph’s Academy.
Answer Machine Now Working
An update to let everyone know that our school telephone answer machine is now back up and running. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
School Crossing Patrol
Please note there will be NO School Crossing Patrol between Thursday 4th September and Thursday 11th September (Dates Inclusive).
Answer Machine Not Working
We have realised that our telephone answering machine is not registering messages left by parents/carers. It is allowing people to leave messages but they are not coming through on our system.
A call has been logged today with our telephone engineer to hopefully have this resolved as soon as possible.
In the meantime, if your child is absent from school, please make sure you make direct contact with the school office .
Thanks
Friday Mass 29th August
We are delighted to be attending our first mass for the new session on Friday 29th August at 10am where Primary 7 will lead us in our readings. Everyone is welcome to attend and we hope to see some of you there!
Pantomime 2025
Sleeping Beauty at the Galleon Leisure Centre, Kilmarnock
We appreciate it may be far too early for a lot of parents/carers to even think about, but we are beginning to arrange our calendar of events taking place between now and the Christmas break!😯
With this in mind, we are going to be booking this years’ local pantomime – Sleeping Beauty, which is to be held in the Galleon Centre. This will be a whole school outing on Tuesday 2nd December at 10am. The cost of the ticket and transport is £16 per child. The box office need EXACT numbers of tickets no later than Monday 15th September.
In order to give everyone plenty of time to pay for this, we plan to offer an initial deposit of £8 due via Parentpay by Monday 8th September. You will be able to access this from today onwards.
This deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE and secures a ticket for your child. If we do not receive a deposit, we will be unable to purchase a ticket for your child.
There will then be one further final payment of £8 required by Friday 31st October.
If any families are worried about the cost of this please contact the school office as soon as possible.
If your child does not wish to attend the Pantomime please let us know by Monday 8th September by contacting the school office.

Catering Update
Hi everyone and welcome back to our pupils and their families. We hope you have all had a great summer. It is wonderful to see the children settled in their new classes after the summer, looking smart and ready to learn in their uniforms. Thank you!
We have a little update regarding our kitchen and some upcoming work that will be carried out. East Ayrshire Council was due to begin renovations to our kitchen area during the summer, unfortunately this was unable to begin when planned and the work is going to begin in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, our amazing catering staff will be cooking the children’s lunches from Hillhead school and transporting the food from there to our lunch hall ready for the children to eat at the usual lunch time. As much as this is a change to how the staff will provide lunches, there will be minimal disruption for the children. Free fruit will still be available for children to access at break times and lunch times. We will keep you updated with any changes in the near future.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter,
Mrs McCreadie
