Primary 4 have enjoyed their weekly visit to our neighbours at Crossgates Care Home. Together, we have enjoyed making lots of new friendships with the residents and staff, sharing stories, playing games and making crafts with plenty of fun and laughter with our new friends.
Here are some pictures of some of our recent visits from designing and carving Halloween pumpkins, colouring together, solving crossword puzzles, wordsearches and games such as ‘Play your cards Right’…a favourite with residents as to whether it was ‘higher’ or ‘lower’ !
Here are some pictures of our time together…
Welcome back! What a great first term Primary 4 have had; the children have settled well into their new class and routine and are making good progress. We are looking forward to another fun filled term with lots of fabulous learning taking place.

Welcome back! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. It has been fantastic to see Primary 4 settle into their new classroom. We have had a wonderful start to P4, and we look forward to a fun-filled term with lots of learning taking place. Â
Below is an update on the upcoming term.  Â
Â
Literacy  Â
For our reading focus this term, we will be developing our comprehension strategies such as visualisation and metalinguistics through our class novel ‘Venus Peter Saves the Whale’. Â
Our writing will start by focus on developing our sentence structure and use of description bubbles to describe characters and scenes in our class novel. We will continue to work on our characterisation through descriptive skills in narrative writing. Â
Spelling will take the form of active spelling activities, and the children will experience phonemes and blends at their working level. We will focus on using spelling strategies and practise how to use these as a class. P4 will also be given revision lessons on alphabetical order, sentence structure and dictionary skills.  Â
Â
Numeracy Â
P4 have already looked at how Maths impacts the world around us and where we use Maths in our day to day lives. We have started learning how to round 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100. The class will review Place Value knowledge and use it to build on their sense of number. We will look at 4-digit numbers and read, write and order these numbers. Through our place value work, we will be able to identify the value of each digit. We will then progress to looking at our addition strategies. The class will continue to participate in a daily number talk, to develop mental maths strategies. In Beyond Number, we will start with shape, looking at the properties of a range of 2D and 3D shapes and create tiling patterns. Â
Â
Health and Wellbeing  Â
At the beginning of the term, we discussed their rights as a child and selected articles to include within their class charter. As a class we had a vote on our class charter theme, this is displayed within our classroom. This term we will focus on the ‘Do be Mindful’ programme which gives us time to participate in mindfulness activities each day. We will also continue to follow our PATHS programme, which includes setting up our class rules, looking at individual emotions, building friendships, self-control and anger management. Â
Â
UNCRCÂ Â
As a class we looked at the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, we spoke about the fundamental rights for every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities. We voted on what rights we wanted to display as a class. The rights primary 4 selected were the right to play, the right to be heard, the right to have friends and the right to learn. These rights and our class rules are displayed within our class charter. Â
Â
PE Â
PE is on a Wednesday and Friday. This term we will be covering team games, football and badminton. Please make sure your child has a full PE kit with them (includes suitable indoor shoes), this can remain on their peg within school. Â
Thank you for making sure that no jewellery is worn on PE days. Â
Â
Modern Languages Â
We will be revising the alphabet, basic French phrases and numbers this term through, songs, activities and games. Â
Â
Religious Education  Â
This term we will be reflecting on our uniqueness and thinking about our God-given talents. We will reflect on the importance of friendship and link this with various stories from the Bible. There will also be a focus on baptism, looking at the children’s baptism as well as the story of Jesus’ baptism. This will begin the children’s journey of their Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion that will take place this year. The children will take part in class prayers and school Masses, and we will continue to build on our knowledge of common prayers and Mass responses.  Â
Â
Expressive Arts  Â
P4 will have the opportunity to use our school glockenspiels to accompany a song, learning about rhythm, pace and beat. During Drama lessons, the pupils will take part in drama activities to support teamwork and improve confidence. We will also ‘act out’ parts of our class novel. Our artwork will be focused on our class novel, we will create sea and whale artwork looking at the idea of hot and cold colours. Â
Â
Technologies Â
As our independence develops in Primary 4, so does our ability to use IT equipment. Our focus this term will simply be on the use of the ICT equipment. Logging on and off the laptops will encourage independent learning. Typing skills and mouse control are also skills that will be focussed on throughout this term.Â
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a fabulous term with P4!Â
 Mrs MacDonald and Mrs McIntyreÂ

Please check that your child is accessing these tasks and is becoming responsible around this. Homework will always be issued to reinforce learning and children will have been taught the area in class. Homework creates routine and independence and will be an expectation at every stage of school life especially secondary school. In developing good habits in the upper primary this will ease that transition when the time comes.
As always your continued support is appreciated across the school year.
Mrs Crawford and Mrs McIntyre.

PE days will now be on Wednesday and Friday mornings. We will participate in independent and teamwork for Athletics during April/May moving onto Orienteering in June. Pupils will complete these lessons outdoors as much as possible so please make sure your child is prepared for the weather that day. It is essential that your child comes to school prepared for outdoor learning in appropriate clothing as we hopefully plan to be outside more as the summer nears and weather improves. Make sure they have plenty of water with them for very hot periods and sun cream.
Science
This term in Science we will be investigating water. We will be developing our knowledge and understanding of the water cycle and also exploring and investigating the methods for purifying water. We will look at the many uses of water and why it is important to conserve water.

As Eastertide passes, we will be mainly focusing on Mary, Our Lady. Celebrating her example and significance through the Gospel of Mark as well as revisiting the feast of the Ascension and Pentecost. In June, we will look at God’s Loving Plan resources as part our This Is Our Faith programme. This will look closely at friendships, relationships as well as the role of being a parent /carer.
IDL
Our enterprise topic this term is ‘A Night at the Movies’. These will be ‘premiered’ at our own Oscars ceremony/Party where we will dress up in our best and have the opportunity to culminate all our learning, have fun and raise some funds for school.
Thank you again for your continual support throughout this year for our P5 pupils , class and school.
Mrs McIntyre & Mrs Mackinnon
As part of their ‘Charities’ topic and SCIAF Lenten fundraising, P4 put on a fabulous Outdoor activity- based afternoon for the whole school on Friday. Pupils had a ‘wheely’ good time bringing in their scooters/bikes and even Hoverboard Segways to whizz around the playground.
Here are some of our action-packed photos of our class enjoying their outdoor scooter/bike day afternoon…
Thank you Primary 4!
Yesterday, the whole school celebrated World Book Day 2022 and our P5 class took part in various activities during the day.
Here are some of the fabulous costumes:
Yesterday, we dressed up as characters from our favourite books. We all watched an ‘Authors’ Live’ session with  Simon Farnaby, the actor from ‘Horrible Histories’. He has released a new book ‘The Wizard and Me’ about a talking guinea pig called Bubbles who is very funny and cheeky. It had us all laughing in class. He challenged us to write about an animal and use your imagination.
By Victoria P5
In the afternoon, at an assembly we took part in a parade and got to look at all the different costumes. They were all great! We really enjoyed the live session and looking at the ‘Flanimals’ by Ricky Gervais, we decided to create our own ‘Flanimals’ and develop their characters giving them human characteristics and using descriptive writing techniques.
By Archie and Millie Mc P5
Here are some ‘Flanimals’ you may not have heard of….
Welcome back! We hope everyone in P5 is feeling rested after their October holidays and are now settled back into the school routine and ready to take on more responsibility in the upper school.
We are looking forward to new learning discoveries this term as well as building on our current skills and developing these further.
         Literacy
Primary 5 will focus on our reading skills and comprehension strategies through accessing both Bug Club and Giglet texts both within school and at home for homework. We will be developing our fluency and expression as well as looking at both fiction and non-fiction texts this term to link with our IDL topic.
In spelling, we will continue to focus on our phonemes, blends and common words. This will take the form of activities related to the ‘Active Spelling’ resource pertinent to the ability and stage.
Within listening and talking, we will continue to practise listening to and following instructions. The children will also be encouraged to share their opinions on different matters as well as providing an explanation as to why they think in that way. This will be predominantly linked to our IDL topic for the term, but will encompass many of our curricular areas.
This term our formal writing lessons will centre on persuasive writing. We will use structured planning ideas to allow children to generate pieces and build upon helpful writing techniques to support this. We will also continue to revisit narrative genres using our description bubbles to aid writing and note taking for non-fiction IDL writing.
Numeracy
Pupils are working on concepts within groups focussing on 1st and 2nd level concepts. The circles and rectangles groups will focus on addition and subtraction this term, we will be using various strategies to help our numeracy confidence grow. The squares and rectangles will also focus on addition and subtraction at their level we will use number lines and our place value knowledge to practise our formal notation. All pupils will engage in number talks and interactive maths activities as well as looking at new strategies to develop their mental maths agility and recall. Times tables should continue to be practised at home to ensure quick recall. In Beyond Number, we will be looking at ‘Time’ as a focus within our respective groups.
Health and Well-being/ICT
We will be continuing to look at emotions and feelings this term and strategies we can use in dealing with them. This will be supported through our whole school ‘Paths’ resource. In ICT, Primary 5 will continue to work on our basic computing skills and how these can help us in everyday life. Continued practise in class and at home of touch typing and login skills will improve access to various platforms currently used in school from Glow, Giglets, Bug club and Sumdog.
R.E
This month our focus has been on Our lady. We will be supported in our learning by Srs. Mabel and Juliet from Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish who will help us to learn prayers such as the ‘Angelus’. We will also focus on the lives of the Saints, the creation story and discuss themes such as ‘Remembrance’. In December, we will prepare as a class for advent and observe this through various school lessons, attending mass and associated activities.
Science/IDL
Our IDL focus this term will be science based looking at animal and their habitats and the diversity of living things. We will tie this in with a study of David Attenborough and the work he does. This will link to Art and literacy as well as STEM. This will be introduced as the term progresses once we have completed our ‘Knights and Castles’ learning.
Looking forward to another great term in P5.
Thanks again for your on-going support.
Mrs Crawford & Mrs McIntyre.
Welcome back! The children of Primary 5 have settled beautifully back into school after the holidays and are ready to become super role models as part of the upper school.
This term we have established our class community, routines and expectations and we are making excellent progress already.
Literacy
Primary 5 will focus on a novel study to begin the academic session. We are reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and it is proving very popular! We have reading, writing and comprehension links to the novel as well as art and health and well-being tasks.
We will continue to use Bug Club as our differentiated reading resource and will be developing our fluency and comprehension skills through the use of this resource both in class and as homework.
Spelling will take the form of active activities related to the ‘Active Spelling’ resource, the children will continue to experience phonemes and blends pertinent to the ability and stage.
This term our formal writing lessons will centre on descriptive writing. We will use structured planning ideas to allow children to generate pieces, which are rich in language and grammatically sound. The stimuli for this will be IDL topic work on ‘Knights and Castles’ and our ‘Charlie’ novel.
Numeracy
Pupils are back in their working groups focussing on 1st and 2nd level concepts. The circles and rectangles groups will continue to reinforce multiplication, division and remainders before moving on to place value. The squares and rectangles will also focus on place value and the importance of column and quantity value. All pupils will also look at Data Handling as part of their Beyond Number topic. This will involve collecting and interpreting data, as well as creating tables, charts and graphs.
Times tables should continue to be practised at home to ensure quick recall.
Health and Well-being
The class have worked brilliantly as a team to ensure that our class and primary 5 family understand the responsibilities and expectations that will be placed upon them this year. Our class charter is complete and children are enjoying earning house tokens for their respective houses.
We are continuing to use our whole school ‘Paths’ resource this year, which allows children to grow emotionally and channel their thoughts and behaviours in a calm and proactive way. Children are familiar with this programme and can name and identify their feelings. We will continue to provide them with scenarios and situations that will require their knowledge of ‘self’ to grow.
R.E
The pupils have been looking at the sacrament of Confirmation as we begin this term. This is in preparation for receiving this sacrament later this month and what to expect. Our study focus will be on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, looking at the lives of the Saints and being ready to become a full member of the Church. This term we will also focus on ‘Friendship’ as we relate this to bible stories from the Gospel of Mark.
IDL
Our topic this term is ‘Knights and Castles’. Pupils will use their developing research and note-taking skills to look at historical events in the Middle Ages. This will include the history of castles, various castle designs, Knights, Codes of chivalry and looking at society at this time. We will be using various curricular areas within this topic to help such as ICT, Art, Literacy, STEM and problem solving skills.
We are thrilled to be working with your children and look forward to building relationships with their families. If you would like to speak to either Mrs Crawford or Mrs McIntyre please call the school office to arrange this.

In P.E, we will be working on ‘Gymnastics‘ and ‘Basketball‘, building necessary physical skills within these sports such as co-ordination, control, precision and balance, as well as teamwork strategies. A kind reminder : P.E days are Wed/Fri and we would ask that your child comes prepared with a kit, a change of shoes (indoor) and without wearing jewellery if possible as not coming prepared can often result in reduced lesson time.
