Primary 3 Curriculum Overview
Welcome to the P3 curriculum overview for term 2. This will be a busy term with lots of new learning as well asย fun and exciting activities to prepare for Advent and Christmas.
Literacy
Our focus in term 1 was using our class novel to create descriptive writing by describing the main character, Horton, and using rhyming words and adjectives to describe what he hears and the things he sees. Through descriptive writing, we also have been using our topic about vertebrates and invertebrates when using descriptive bubbles. During term 2 we will now focus on narrative and report writing. As well as talking and listening games and activities such as Show and Tell.
P3 have been participating in reading and spelling activities and children have been working within groups to revisit previous sounds and texts, ready to use their skills and strategies to tackle new and unfamiliar spelling sounds and reading books.ย Our writing focus is currently descriptive writing, and these written pieces will come from our class novel and topic of Vertebrates.
Numeracy
Our focus in numeracy has been place value, however, this is something we will regularly revisit with children consolidating previous learning on 2-digit numbers, initially to 99. Then the children moving to three-digit numbers beyond 100.ย Children were and will continue to partition these numbers and confidently discuss this in terms of (H) hundreds, tens (T) and units (u), whilst building on their understanding of number and number patterns. In term 2 the focus will be using addition with two-digit numbers before moving to three-digit numbers. Word problems will also continue to be a focus to consolidate our strategies within this operation of number.ย Children have been using their โThinking it throughโ jotters as the term progresses to develop problem solving skills, applying knowledge of number to new contexts and develop strategies for number problems.
Beyond number, children have been focusing on measurement and using different equipment to measure in cm and metres. Children have been estimating using rulers and metre sticks before measuring objects to see how close their predictions were. For term 2 the focus will be 2D and 3D shape identifying real life examples, comparing the properties of 2D and 3D objects, and creating their own 3D shapes.
Health & Wellbeing
All children have now had the opportunity to be Pupil of the Day and will start to be chosen for the second time in term 2. Our Pupil of the Day has been receiving lots of compliments.ย We will continue to explore emotions, and how we recognise these emotions within ourselves and in others and learning how to control them.
In P.E, our sessions will continue to take place on a Tuesday and a Thursday and our focus in term 2 this time will be, Social Dance, Football and Gymnastics. In term 1 children were participating in hockey and badminton.ย Children will use their transferrable skills when playing in a team.
Our focus during R.E sessions has been Mary in October, moving to Saints and Remembrance, the routines of the church and the celebration of Mass.ย We will also spend some time reading and discussing bible stories relating to friendship and love, whilst considering how each of us are unique and have our own God given talents.
Topic
The children will be participating in activities in different areas of the curriculum including social studies and will be focusing on climates and weather around the world. ย Children have been exploring and developing an understanding of living things as this was a focus on our topic Vertebrates topic where ย children have been sorting and categorising living things into vertebrates and non-vertebrates.
We hope this is the start of a very fun filled successful term and that the children enjoy learning across the curriculum.
Take care,
Miss Grimley

Today we celebrated our final Mass with Fr Martin. We raised the roof with some of our favourite hymns and of course a special rendition of Super Crab! We can’t thank Fr Martin enough for all of the love and support he has shown in developing the faith of our school community.ย He will be greatly missed, however he will always hold a very special place in our Mount Carmel family.

Dressed in our finest clothes, we decorated the party table with our personal Mendhi designs, danced with our Moon and Star wands, made special Eid cards for our friends and even had some tasty treats. Have a look at all of the fun we had!
Primary 1 Curriculum Overview – Term 4
Welcome back to the P1 blog where you can read all about the learning taking place this term!
Literacy
Reading and Phonics โ
P1 are becoming more and more confident when using their initial sounds to word build. This term we will further develop our word building skills, including CVCC and CCVC words (e.g. park, drum). We will continue to use the Active Literacy strategy โsay, make, break, read and writeโ to support this new learning. We will also continue to learn new โlook and sayโ common words every week.
In class, we are using our guided Bug Club texts to develop our skills in prediction, reading aloud and reading for understanding. At home, we are enjoying a range of independent texts on Bug Club at the same level.
Writing โ
We will focus during this last term on using our knowledge of word building and common words to build sentences independently. The children will have many opportunities to develop their independent writing skills through weekly news, free writing and sentence tasks linked to their spelling sounds and reading books.
In addition to this, P1 will be developing their description writing skills. We will focus on describing number, colour, texture and size for familiar people and objects.
Letter formation will be developed through regular handwriting lesson and fine motor skill activities.
Talking and Listening โ
Through a range of activities across the curriculum, P1 will continue to develop their talking and listening skills; understanding when to listen and when to respond, taking turns and communicating with others.
Numeracy
This term, P1 will consolidate their understanding of the concept of addition within 10. They will focus on increasing their mental accuracy of number bonds to 10. The children will have many opportunities to develop their mental accuracy through our daily Fast 10 and Big Maths Beat That. We will also be applying our knowledge of addition within 10 when working on missing number calculations using the โLock in and Count Onโ strategy.
When P1 are confident in their addition skills they will begin to focus on subtraction within 10. The children will transfer their skills to answer subtraction calculations and word problems. In addition to this we will consolidate our knowledge of numbers to 20 and beyond, including recognising number names.
Beyond Number
We will continue to develop our knowledge of measure, using familiar objects in our environment both at school and at home. We will explore mathematical language such as tallest/smallest, heavier/lighter to compare items. We will also use different non-standard units of measure (e.g cubes, hands) to estimate and then measure the length and weight of items.
We will also have a focus on money. P1 will learn to recognise and identify coins up to ยฃ2. They will also learn to differentiate between and use the language โpenceโ and โpoundโ. The children will use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to add to find totals within 10p as well as subtract to find change.
Health and Wellbeing
P1 will continue to develop their social and emotional skills through our whole school PATHS programme. The children continue to enjoy engaging with the puppets and love it when they visit our classroom. P1 love giving and receiving compliments each day as part of โPupil of the Dayโ.
We will continue to develop our knowledge of ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy with a focus on making healthy choice every day and exploring mindfulness techniques.
Physical Education
This term P1 will focus on Athletics. The children will practice running, jumping, and throwing both independently as well as part of a team. Once we have developed our running, jumping, and throwing skills we will compete against each other in friendly relay races. Later in the term, P1 will also have a weekly session of Fun Fitness with our Active Schools co-ordinator Mark Devlin.
P.E. days will be Monday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately with either joggers or leggings and trainers. Your child must continue to wear their school jumper as part of their uniform on PE days.
ย Religious Education
This term P1 will think about Our Lady. The children will reflect on Mary as the mother of Jesus and the mother of all of us. ย We will create a special altar to Mary in our classroom and learn to pray the โHail Maryโ.
Through the use of Godโs Loving Plan, we will explore the beauty of Godโs creation and how we recognise this in others and ourselves. We will talk about our own skills and talents, focusing on how God has made us all individual and unique.
ย IDL
Growing Up – We have explored the timeline of human life from baby through to adult and particularly focused on the needs of babies. We looked at photographs of ourselves as babies and explored how we had changed since then identifying how many different skills we learned at nursery and in P1.
My Senses – Through a variety of sensory experiences, indoors and outdoors, P1 will learn about each of the five senses and their uses to explore our surroundings. We will also develop our knowledge of parts of the body and what they do, showing an understanding of our own health and wellbeing.
P1 and P2 Communication
Following national and local authority guidance we will now not be using Glow mail as a means of communication with our P1 and P2 pupils.
Instead we have created group mailing lists for each class using parent email addresses. Class teachers will use these emails to communicate directly with families.
If the email address we have for you has changed or you do not wish this to be used for home learning purposes please contact Mrs McGahon – joanna.mcgahon@eastayrshire.org.uk
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Tier 4 Restrictions
Due to yesterday’s Scottish Government announcements regarding Tier 4 restrictions our planned class Masses can no longer go ahead. We hope to be able to reschedule these as soon as guidelines allow.
Also, we now have to revert back to PE taking place outdoors only. Please ensure that pupils are still coming to school appropriately dressed on their PE days.
Thank you.
