Keeping Our Children Safe Online

The UK Government and the NHS have released evidence-based guidance which aims to support parents with healthy screen habits for children under 5:

For children 5 and above, we know that managing screen time and monitoring content is a massive challenge for families. Here are some top tips for keeping your child’s use of technology safe and positive:

  • Check Age Ratings: Streaming services (like Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+) and games have age-rating systems. Double-checking these can prevent accidental exposure to mature themes.
  • Utilise Parental Controls: Most home Wi-Fi networks, devices, and apps have built-in parental controls. Setting up restrictions or using child-friendly versions (like YouTube Kids) can filter out a large portion of inappropriate content.
  • Keep Screens in Shared Spaces: Whenever possible, encourage children to use tablets, laptops and gaming consoles in communal areas of the home rather than alone in bedrooms.
  • Have Open Conversations: Talk to your child about what they like to watch and play. Let them know that if they ever see something that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused, they can tell you without getting into trouble.

Recommended Resources

If you are looking for guidance on how to set up parental controls or want to check if a specific show or game is suitable for your child, we highly recommend the following free resources:

Mobile Devices in School

A reminder regarding our policy on mobile devices.

Any mobile phones brought to school must be switched off. Mobile phones should not be used in the playground before school, at break or lunchtimes or within the classrooms. Any smart watches must be on ‘school mode’ during the school day. Pupils should not be able to access games, calls or messages through their watch. The use of mobile phones or wearable devices is not permitted during lessons or breaks. This ensures that students are able to fully engage in learning without distractions.

Our goal is not to eliminate use but to empower our children to navigate it safely.

Thank you for your continued support.

Inclusion Week

We are having an Inclusion Week (18th May – 22nd May) to raise awareness and understanding of the diverse needs within our school and community.

Community Alcohol Partnership

Working together to challenge underage drinking.

A Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) has been set up to tackle underage drinking. The CAP brings together organisations including the council, the police, community organisations and local retailers to reduce the crime, anti-social behaviour and harm caused by underage drinking.

Drongan PS are looking forward to working with various partners to support this initiative and provide opportunities for our Young People in Drongan.

The Launch Event takes place this week, on Thursday 14th May. We are looking for the support of our community to complete the questionnaire (QR code on leaflet – for adults/residents of Drongan). Children will be given the chance to complete their own questionnaire soon. This information will help to support the CAP and lead to better opportunities for the community.
