Looking after our Bodies

This afternoon the school nurse, Debbie Brown, came to chat to P1-4. We talked about ways in which to keep our bodies healthy and good ‘fuel’ to put into our bodies too.

The pupils had fun organising the ‘Eat Well’ plate and putting food into the correct food group category. We thought about some types of food which might fit into two categories. The children had lots of ideas for healthy snacks which are good for our bodies and our teeth – nice to see they had been listening well yesterday during our Teeth lesson!

We also looked at the body and what we can do to make ourselves be the best we can be. Exercise and keeping clean were two important points; remembering to cut those nails and keeping a close look-out for any signs of head lice too.

A truly healthy couple of days for the pupils of P1-4. Now they know lots about squeaky clean, fit bodies and how to keep their dazzling smiles!

We’re Teeth-tastic at Portpatrick Primary!

This afternoon Dental Health Officer Janine Maxwell popped by to observe the pupils brushing their teeth and have a chat with P1-4. They had lots of questions to ask and Janine gave them lots of great pieces of advice. Pupils got to brush the cuddly dinosaur’s teeth and look inside a model of a tooth. What an afternoon bursting with information!

Every pupil got a tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush to take home too.

R.E.A.L. Club launch on World Book Day

World Book Day launch of the R.E.A.L. Club!

Today is World Book Day! What better time to launch our brand new R.E.A.L. (Reading Enjoyed at Lunchtime) club!

After we’d enjoyed one of Barbara’s delicious lunches and brushed our teeth, we had the option of popping along to the Quiet Room to enjoy some ‘me’ time with a good book.

The sun shone in the window, cosy blankets were scattered on the floor for extra comfort and we got the chance to lose ourselves in a story – bliss!

This will continue every Thursday lunchtime and is open to all pupils to pop along if they like the sound of it. Look forward to seeing you there!

Snowdrop picking in the sunshine

What an idyllic afternoon! In preparation for P5-7’s Daffodil Tea, Mrs Ferguson and a car-load of pupils headed up to Dunskey Estate to pick some daffodils and snowdrops.

Gaby, Jemima, Mr Orr-Ewing and a band of their helpers worked alongside Mia, Innes, Olivia and Emily and Mrs Ferguson picking snowdrops and chatting. In the words of Innes, ” I wish I could stay here all day!”

Over 160 bunches of snowdrops later (it’s still a bit on the early side for daffodils), Mrs Ferguson and the children headed back to school leaving the rest still picking.

Gaby is very kindly going to deliver these up to the Portpatrick Hotel. Aren’t we lucky to have our community working together in this way?

Many thanks to the Orr-Ewing family and to Gaby, Jemima and their team for helping us out. The pupils had a lovely afternoon!

2D Shape Hunters

Today P1 and 2 donned their 2D Shape Hunter caps and set off on a mission!

Having looked at some 2D shapes and their properties in class, we headed into the village to try and find some examples of these in the wider world.

What great hunters we were! We spotted lots of rectangles and squares, circles and ovals and Jack spotted a hexagon too!

Ruby noticed an interesting shape – so we counted the sides. There were 9 and so we even found about the nonagon shape! What a busy and fun morning!

Tomorrow we are hoping this Winter sunshine holds so that we can head into the playground and make a tally chart of the 2D shapes we can spot.

Aspects of Christmas!

Friends and family of the pupils of Portpatrick Primary were treated to a fabulous Christmas show on Wednesday 16th December. The hall was packed for the afternoon and evening performances. The children (and staff!) had been working really hard on their play ‘Aspects of Christmas’ with plenty of songs, laughter and some truly wonderful acting were packed into their entertaining show.

The show told the stories of families at Christmas time with many of the scenarios being reminiscent of the typically fun, but hectic, time we have at this time of year. The children had a fabulous time, with quotes such as “it was excellent!” and “I had the best time ever doing the show!” The audience were equally impressed.

The P.T.A. held a raffle after each performance too with some fabulous prizes – thanks to Mrs Henry’s mum for the beautifully decorated cakes.

A great time was had by all! Well done to everyone involved.

Family Open Afternoon and Children in Need Fund-raising

On Friday 20th November, Portpatrick Primary held a family open afternoon. Despite the inclement weather, this was well attended by parents, siblings and grandparents. In preparation for Christmas, families participated in craft based activities with the boys and girls.

As part of our Eco School’s Waste targets, the pupils organised a Bring and Buy sale to recycle unwanted tots and books. We also made Christmas craft decorations to sell to fund raise for Children in Need. In total we raised £150.06   . The children were then given an opportunity to select a toy from the items to promote our  ‘re-use’ initiative before the remaining items were taken to a local charity shop to further help others. A fun afternoon was had by all.

Children In Need

Today we celebrated Children in Need day here at school. The theme was Sporting Champions – Be a Hero so we could come to school dressed as a gymnast to a footballer or Serena Williams or Aguero! We got together and worked as buddies for some writing thinking about what Children in Need is all about and enjoyed a fun aerobics sesison with Mrs Ferguson to get us all moving! We raised over £76 with our donations and by selling Pudsey wristbands which is great. Thanks to everyone for your efforts.

Scottish SPCA Visitor

Today we were lucky enough to welcome Tracy from the Scottish SPCA. She spoke initially with P5-7 and then popped through to P1-4 for a chat. Tracy told us all about the work of this invaluable charity and the animals she works with on a weekly basis. She spoke about looking after wildlife and domestic animals and things which we can do as the public to help. It was really interesting and great to get to talk to someone about their job.
