Secret project!

Today P4 undertook a top secret project- we created our own islands. I was so impressed by the way everyone worked together. There was loads of brilliant teamwork, group decision making and cooperation as well as creativity and independent thinking. Each group had lots of decisions to make, from their island’s name, the flag, details about the population, amenities on the island, currency, wildlife, even a national anthem! I’ve promised to share the photos of each group’s finished work so here they are:

Some groups chose to include 3D models in their island maps, we had whole national anthems written and performed, airports and runways planned out, governments and laws decided on, a tiny whale skeleton washed up on a beach, flags waving. Brilliant work everyone!

The Science Centre

P4 had a fantastic trip to the science centre. We’ve been learning about electricity this term and had the opportunity to participate in a workshop which involved us creating our own electric cars.

A huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who gave up their time to help us out and to Mrs Smith for taking P4B as I was sadly unable to go. Looks like you all had a brilliant time!

Here are some photos of our trip:

Please see the next blog post for more photos.

Measure

p4B have been working on measure. We’ve been looking at weight, volume and length, participating in practical activities as well as looking at conversions.

Here we are exploring weight.

We used different types of scales to record the weight of various things around the classroom, compare the weight of two objects and to balance an object with small weights.

And here we are exploring measure.

We had to measure and compare the measurements of various items around the classroom, parts of our bodies and things in the wing. We had to choose the best measurement tool each time and the best unit of measurement.

2D and 3D shape

Last week we were busy revising 2D and 3D shape.

We went out into the playground to find some 3D shapes. We worked in groups and recorded what we saw and where we saw it. We even found one shape we hadn’t seen before- the bike sheds are quarter cylinders!

Here we are on a shape hunt:

Here we are exploring 3D shapes in the classroom. We were counting edges, vertices, flat and curved faces and edges:

And finally we did some work on tiling. We talked about which 2D shapes would be best for tiling and worked out how to fit them together. It required lots of patience and a ruler! Here we are some work in progress pictures:

Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Learning in Term 3:

Lots of our work in term 3 focused on our Vikings topic. The children’s talks from Viking gods and goddesses were fantastic and displayed brilliant research skills. We hope you enjoyed our sharing the learning assembly and having a look at all of the brilliant work from P4. Everyone worked really hard!

In writing, we looked at personal recount writing. We wrote diary entries from the perspective of a Viking child. We developed our creative writing skills with imaginative stories based around Viking sagas. We participated in the BBC’s 500 Words competition with our own short stories. Another focus was use of ambitious vocabulary in our writing.

In maths, our main focus was fractions. We benefitted from working with a principal maths teacher. We looked at solving fractions problems, placing fractions on a number line, understanding the role of numerator and denominator, compared equivalent fractions.

We worked with a visiting musical specialist, looking at elements of notation, theory, rhythm, beat and pulse. We’ve been really enjoying working on Spanish with Mrs McCreadie.

Electricity

This is going to be our topic for term 4. We will be:

  • Learning about the history of electricity
  • Learning about safety around electricity
  • Developing our understanding of electricity as a means of transferring energy
  • Exploring simple electrical circuits
  • Combining simple components to create electrical circuits

Core Literacy:

Our class novel this term will be The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.

This term we will be:

  • Giving opinions and compare a range of texts.
  • Interpreting main ideas by retelling the story in own words.
  • Retelling the events of a story in chronological order.
  • Answering literal, inferential and evaluative questions about a text.
  • Working on asking, answering and constructing relevant questions to extend knowledge.
  • Answering questions about the characters events and settling in a story to predict what will happen next.

Children will continue to be given books and weekly reading homework. Please ensure your child completes this at home and remember to sign their reading diary. Encourage your child to read widely for enjoyment at home and use the three sharings approach to discuss what they have read. Your child will also be given weekly spelling homework this term which they should complete using the grid inside their spelling homework jotters.

Core Numeracy:

This term we will be:

  • Money: I can investigate and use effective mental strategies to carry out calculations involving money; I can select appropriate strategies to solve simple money problems
  • Time: I can calculate 5 minute time intervals; I can tell the time in minutes to and past using both analogue and digital
  • Measure: I can accurately measure and estimate the length, width and height of objects; I know the perimeter is the distance around the outside; I can measure the area of regular shapes using cm2; I can estimate, compare and order the weight of objects using grams and kilograms; I can read scales accurately.
  • Data analysis: I can use simple databases to extract information; I can extract information from a table or chart; I can ask and answer questions about data presented.
  • Ideas of chance and uncertainty: I can use appropriate vocabulary to predict the outcome of a scenario.

Your child will continue to receive maths homework this week. We encourage your child to continue using Sumdog at home to practice their maths skills. Children should all have a copy of their usernames and passwords.

Parenthood, Sexual Health and Relationships:

This part of the curriculum will cover:

  • Families and friendships
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Classifying living and non- living things
  • Growth and development from baby to present day/ life cycles
  • Needs of a baby/ how to look after a baby
  • Similarities and differences between males and females
  • Correct vocabulary for male and female body parts including reproductive organs
  • Maintaining a healthy body/ personal hygiene

Other curricular areas:

We will be:

  • Receiving specialist music input focusing on Scots songs
  • Continuing to take part in the P4 choir
  • Learning Spanish with Mrs McCreadie
  • Preparing for sports day with PE teachers

We are looking forward to a busy and fun term ahead!

Viking Longboats

We have been working on our technology skills and using recycled materials to create our own longboats. We worked in pairs and threes, showing brilliant teamwork and problem solving skills. We had to make sure the boats were able to float. Lots of us also chose to include historical details using knowledge from our Vikings topic, like dragon prowheads and shields.

Here we are planning our first steps and exploring the properties of different materials:

Here we are putting our boats together:

And here are the final results:

Friendship

We have been doing some work on friendship. We discussed the qualities of a good friend and thought of these- a good friend is kind, honest, trustworthy, someone who you play with lots but not always, not bossy, doesn’t make fun of others for being different, has lots of fun, doesn’t talk  back, treats others as they would want to be treated… we’re lucky in P4B as this describes us really well!

We watched this video all about friendship soup and the ingredients for a friend:

https://youtu.be/H7w7yXkJTu

We discussed what we would do in different scenarios and how we can be a good friend to others, for example if someone didn’t have anyone to play with at break time, or was being called names.

Finally we created our own “friendship flowers”. We drew a picture of ourselves in the centre, then passed the flowers around the class and wrote something we liked about the other person on everyone else’s work. There were lots of lovely compliments and smiles being shared.

Here are some examples of our work:

Freya and the Goblins

For writing this week, we listened to the beginning of a Viking saga. Sagas were stories Vikings told one another, mainly about gods and goddesses like Thor, Odin and Freyja. We heard the beginning of the saga “Freyja and the goblins” and then wrote our own middles and ends to the story.

Our work was really exciting. We showed off some of the amazing vocabulary we’ve been working on, used connectives and speech marks. Some work included tales of terrifying skeletons approaching Freyja in a cave, in some stories the goblins were friendly and helped Freyja make new jewellery, in others ninjas appeared to help the goddess!

Have a look at the clip below and see what you think:

Viking shields

As part of our Vikings topic, we had a great time creating our own Viking shields. We learnt that shields were made from wood, with parts attached using metal rivets and they were decorated by the warriors themselves. We noticed that traditionally only one or two colours were used and the shields featured bold patterns with simple, straight lines.

Here we are  hard at work.

And here are the final results!
