Ring Ring! – Science Stem Activity

Hello Methlick Primary

Our challenge for today is related to this picture and the title of the activity, can you guess what it might be?

.

.

.

Good try! We might be spending more time on phones or computers these days so let’s find a fun way to communicate. We will be making a paper cup phone that you can use with anyone at home 🙂 Do you think this will be even possible? If you have tried before and already know the answer, make sure you don’t give it away! Let’s begin.

P.S: This is one of my favourite experiments when I was young, I did it with my brother and we couldn’t stop laughing, we had lots of fun. Hope you do too!

With this activity you will be developing your Scientific skills, such as critical thinking, planning, problem-solving,  persevering, following steps.

Questions:

  1. What do you think is going to happen?
  2. How do you think our voices travel from one cup to the other?
  3. Do you think you will hear better if the string is tight or lose? Why?
  4. Do you think using different strings will make a difference in how you hear things?

Materials

-Two paper or plastic cups (even yogurt ones will do)

-Pencil/ colouring markers

-String (Make sure it is at least 2 mts)

-You and someone else

Steps

  1. Very careful with the pencil poke the bottom of the cup to make a small hole. If you need help from a grown up, ask for help.
  2. Pass the string through and make a small knot at each end.

3. If your cups are white like in the photo you can use the markers to decorate them. If you have a yogurt one or something with a design already you can always find a way to cover that and decorate it.

Your cup telephone is now ready! Well done!

Now, choose somebody at home to try this with. Make sure you are distant enough so you can’t hear the voices clearly.

Questions

  1. Did it happen what you thought it would happen? Explain.
  2. Go back to questions 2-4 and think again.

Did you know?

Old landline phones were created using the same principle as a string telephone. The sound waves are turned into an electrical signal that can travel much farther than a simple string.

Science Behind

Sounds are a vibration in the air, we can’t see it but we can hear it. What happened in this experiment is that your voice vibrated inside the cup allowing that vibration to travel through the string into the other person’s cup. If the string is not tight enough the vibration will go all around making it difficult to get properly to the other side, so you might not hear well.

Let me know how you did by commenting below, if you want to share a photo with me you can always email me: amanda.maturana@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Let’s Travel!- Spanish Speaking Countries

Hola Methlick!

Today our activities will take us around the world. We can’t leave our houses just now but that doesn’t stop us from exploring. You are going to learn which countries speak Spanish, where you can find them in the map and their flags. You can choose from spicy or hot and  there will be extra challenges too!

We will be using Google Earth, if for some reason it doesn’t work, you can always use Google Maps.

Let’s see.

Whoosh & Kaboom! Science-Stem Activity

Good Morning Boys and Girls,

For today’s topic I am going to ask you to relate the title of this post and a picture of one of my favourite Disney films. Can you guess what we will build today? Can you name the film?

.

.

.

Well done! Today we will build a Catapult, in order to do that I am going to show you some materials you can use and a possible way to do it. You can choose the level of difficulty you want:

Spicy: You can follow the steps from below.

Hot: You will build your own using your own way to do it.

With this activity you will be developing your Scientific skills, such as critical thinking, planning, problem-solving,  persevering, following steps.

Some of you might need help or supervision when using the materials. If you realize you don’t have the exact materials you can always find other things  to help you, that would be a fantastic problem-solving!

Score Card and Planner: Click the green link to find a handout that will track your design, play and questioning skills.

Whoosh & Kaboom!

Materials

Steps 1

Collect all the materials you will need and set them on your table, ready to begin.

Step 2-3

As it is shown in the picture, pile up 7 popsicles  and make a safe knot at the end of each.  The 2 popsicles left, pill them up too and make a knot just at one end.

Steps 4-5

Like a big tweezer open the two popsicles and place them on top and under the other big pile. Make sure the one in the bottom passes between the last two popsicles of the pile. See picture below.

Step 6-7

Make sure everything is well tight and stable. At the end glue the lid at the tip of the popsicle, make sure it’s well glued before using it.

While you wait for it to dry you can start preparing your targets, here are two ideas.

Let’s begin the battle! You can comment on the post about your work and thoughts. Also, you can send me a photo of your design to amanda.maturana@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

This is mine, it was so fun trying it! There were a few things I didn’t have so I replaced them and it worked 🙂

Well done for trying!

Magic Words – Spanish

During this period of being at home we have learnt to be more thankful about people, moments and opportunities. Also, the beautiful Assembly we had yesterday gave us the opportunity to think of different ways to say thank you.

So when we are thankful about something or someone we say “Thank you”  and that is our first Magic Word. We usually use 3 magic words all the time, can you remember the other 2?

Your challenges for today is related to these important Magic Words, click on the sway to see them.

Magic Words
The following words can make a huge difference in our lives by using them. We use them all the time and lately we might have been using them even more. Today we will use them as much as we …

The Magic of Science – Ms Maturana -Mild and Spicy

Good Morning Boys and Girls,

Today I planned some Science experiments to do at home. Since we have been learning about water there is something  that makes water super interesting and magical and that is how things look like when we look at them through water.

You are going to practice this experiments first and then you can set a magic show at home. You could easily be mistaken by a magician! At the end you can explain the Science behind.

These experiments are  simple and most important fun!

Do you know what refraction of light means?

In simple words, everytime we look at things through water the light in it bends and in result we see a different image.

Like this one

Does the pencil or straw looks normal? Why? Discuss.

Experiments

Before and after you do your experiments there are a few questions you need to think first, such as:

Before: What do you think is going to happen?

-Why do you think that will happen?

After: What happened?

-Where you right or wrong?

-What do you think now?

1.Arrow and other objects Experiment

Materials

-Glass of water (not small so you can see better)

-Paper

-Marker

Steps

This experiment is very simple. First, draw an arrow near the top of the paper and one near the bottom, pointing the same direction. Second,  put it behind the jar of water. Third, look right through the middle of the glass. What happens to the arrow? You can do the same with different objects from your home like: pencils, toys, other types of paper. What happens with all of them? Do you see them the same way as normal?

Science Behind

The light bends once when it traveled through the glass cup into the water, and then it bends again when it traveled out of the glass cup and into the air. As a result, the light paths cross and the image appears to be flipped horizontally (left/right).

Isn’t it great?

2. Zip Lock Bag  Experiment

Materials:

-White paper

-Plasctic bag

-Marker

-Jar of water

Things change from the postition we look at them, so in this experiment you will look from above (looking at the surface) rather than in the middle of the glass.  The video below  will show you the steps and what happens. You can draw anything you want just make sure one drawing is white and the other has colour.

Steps

Video with steps

Science Behind

The same way the light bended -as we saw in the first experiment- will happen here. The difference is that we are looking from a different postition/angle, that makes the light to bend completely  so it doesn’t get to our eyes. The part that we can see it is because it has not bended completely.

Isn’t is great?

Here is how it worked for me
