Teacher Leadership

There is an urgent need to extend the pool of potential leaders in Scottish schools. That means we need to develop and foster widely, and from an early stage, the qualities and skills which characterise effective leaders.

Teaching Scotland’s Future (2011)

1.1       Probationer Induction (PI)

All probationers who join Angus Council as part of the Trainee Induction Scheme participate in the Tayside and Fife Teacher Education Partnership (TFTEP) programme. This is a programme delivered jointly by Angus, Fife, Perth and Kinross and Dundee Councils in collaboration with the University of Dundee. This programme will run during session 2016-17.

The Angus Council Always Learning site contains a wealth of online courses. The following course is recommended for those undertaking Probationer Induction (PI). It can be accessed through the Education Intranet Links menu. If there are any issues accessing any of the e-learning packages, please contact Organisational Development for assistance.

Session Topic    Date
eLearning GIRFEC As required

1.2       Consolidating Practice (CP)

There is no substitute for experience. Throughout the early stages of their career teachers continue to develop a portfolio of experiences in learning and teaching supported by colleagues and critical friends within their school. Teacher Learning Communities can also be effective mechanisms to support those who have recently completed their trainee induction year. There is no formal structure to this phase. Teachers should be looking to enhance their knowledge through a range of relevant professional learning opportunities. High quality mentor and peer relationships are a key component of this phase of development.

MyGTCS should be used to gather evaluative statements on these professional learning experiences with a description on how they have impacted on learning and teaching for young people.

1.3       TeachMeets (TM)

What is a TeachMeet?

Learn something new, be amazed, amused and enthused.  This is an informal gathering of those curious about teaching and technology. Anyone can share great ideas they’ve trialled in their classrooms or ask important questions.  Everyone is welcome to join in: teachers from all types of schools, teaching all subjects and age groups.  The main part of TeachMeet is hearing stories about learning from teachers.  It is a chance for teachers to hear ideas from each other and be inspired by colleagues, along with a whole bucket load of networking to boot.

Format

Each TeachMeet will be hosted by an Angus practitioner in one of our schools. Please see below for the list of dates and locations. Remember to sign-up for each TeachMeet through CPD Online. There may be a particular theme for the session so check the Blog beforehand.

We are looking for contributors to the TeachMeet who would be prepared to give a micro or a nano presentation to the group. Please let Lesley Duguid (DuguidL@angus.gov.uk ) know if you would like to participate.

What to Present?

You can talk about anything that has inspired you, has worked well in class, a tool, a strategy, a topic… The list is endless. Let’s also agree not to cause any PowerPoint induced comas and remember technology may not always be your friend.  Set up time is 2 minutes for each presentation.

You do not have to present anything, you can always be an Enthusiastic Lurker

Rules for talks

  • Micro-presentations are strictly seven minutes long, nano-presentations two minutes long.
  • No PowerPoint allowed… unless… you’re doing 20 slides for 20 seconds each.
  • Please make sure that what you’re showing has actually been done in your classroom or a classroom of a colleague – this isn’t blue skies, this is right here, right now stuff.

#Sharing

We want to share the thoughts and presentations through social media. Participants will be encouraged to tweet using #AngusTeachMeet.
