Restart A Heart Day 2016

posted by Margaret Thompson, Library Assistant, Arbroath High School

On Tuesday 18th October, Arbroath High School pupils, with the help of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and The British Heart Foundation, learned how to restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest/ heart attack.

Currently in the UK, less than one in ten people (8.6%) survive a cardiac arrest. Arbroath High School wants to be part of the campaign which aims to train more than 100,000 young people how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and improve this figure. If we achieved the same survival rates (25%) as found in parts of Norway where CPR is taught in schools, an additional 100 lives could be saved each week – the equivalent of approximately 5,000 every year!

How does democracy affect my life?

What is democracy? In what way does it affect your students’ everyday lives?

Join us on Thursday 20 October for our next Commonwealth Class debate, a wonderful opportunity for your students to delve into the topic of democracy with peers all around the world.

Democracy is the foundation for so many of the things we take for granted in Commonwealth countries, not least of all freedom of expression and the right to vote. In this month’s debate, we will be asking students to reflect on what it would be like to live without democracy, as well as discuss ways they can make sure their voices are heard in their community, school and beyond.

The debate will take place on Schools Online on Thursday 20 October from 9:30 to 11:00 GMT, but you can leave your comments up until Thursday 27 October – we look forward to seeing you there!
