Barefoot resources

posted by Carol Lyon, Carol Lyon, Improvement, Angus Virtual School, Schools & Learning

Barefoot New Term Starter Guide #NTSG campaign goes live on 27 August and will run to 31 October.

The new resources provide educators with a pack of materials they can use straight away in the classroom. The keyring gives quick computational exercises and the mini lesson plans provide a condensed version of the full resource. Barefoot have also included a resource tracker so they can record what lessons they have downloaded/used and pupil stickers as a reward for the children when they have completed an activity.

The five assorted resources are:

  • 2D Shape Drawing
  • Bug in the water
  • Pizza Pickle
  • Scratch Jnr Tinkering
  • Variables, unplugged activity

Schools that request a workshop to be delivered up to 31 December 2018 using the campaign code “101” will receive an NTSG 2.0 Pack with their teacher packs that includes:

  • A kick-start guide to Barefoot, including FAQs
  • Five mini resources, including lesson plans and activities
  • A keyring for quick activity ideas
  • Puzzle and pupil stickers
  • A resource tracker that allows teacher to log and track their Barefoot progress

Involving everyone

Alongside the campaign we also have a prize draw running to help us drive more interaction with the program through social media. To take part teachers just need to download all five of the NTSG 2.0 featured resources. Then, simply post a fun image of their class using the resources in a lesson to the Barefoot Facebook and Twitter pages, under #NTSG.

Barefoot will draw a winner at the end of October and they will receive a tech pack of goodies including a digital camera they can use in school.

Please look out for our social media posts on Facebook and Twitter that you can share and re-tweet. #NTSG

NYCoS Angus Choir – places still available in Forfar

posted by Amy Gibson, YMI Coordinator, Schools and Learning

What happens at NYCoS Angus Choir?

In the first year, Junior Choir meets for 1 hour every Thursday during term time, where they learn and sing together. In years after, this increases to a 2.5 – 3 hour rehearsal per week.

But being part of a NYCoS Area Choir isn’t just about singing in a group; our unique musicianship programme helps to develop skills such as learning to read music, pitching, rhythm, sound production, solo singing and simple theory.

There are concerts for family and friends twice a year, where choir members showcase all they have learned.

NYCoS Angus Choir meets for weekly rehearsals at Forfar Academy. You can find us on a map here.

History of NYCoS Angus Choir
The NYCoS Angus Choir began in 2010 with support from Angus Council. It was the 13th NYCoS Area Choir in a growing network across Scotland.

How much does a membership cost?
The annual membership for Junior Choir is £140 – less than £4.5 per week. If cost is an issue, don’t be put off as, thanks to our supporters, financial assistance is available.

How to join
NYCoS Angus Choir recruits annually from Primary 3 and Primary 4 in the Angus area.

Our free half-hour workshops are a fun and informal way to try out singing and games with others (where possible, with children from the same school). Our staff will then assess each singer’s potential for membership to the choir.

You can sign up for a free workshop online.

Yammer Update

posted by Dawn Adams, Glow Product Owner, Education Scotland

Yammer update on Planned Maintenance – 20.08.18

We are pleased to report that our maintenance work has now completed and the Yammer service is available to all authorised staff users – there is still no pupil access to Yammer. Once the Yammer review is complete, the Deputy First Minister will determine whether Yammer should be restored for any learners.

Yammer Update – 15.08.18

The Yammer service remains unavailable to learners but is available for teaching and non-teaching staff for professional learning and collaboration purposes. We are continuing work on the Yammer Review and no decisions will be made until the review has been completed and recommendations made to the Deputy First Minister for his approval. If you want to find out about other ways to share content or collaborate on Glow, please visit Glow Connect – https://glowconnect.org.uk/sharing-content-in-glow/

Yammer Downtime

In order to ensure that we are able to restore or delete pupils’ Yammer content, dependent on the outcome of the review, we need to carry out some maintenance which means Yammer access will need to be temporarily suspended from Friday 17th August to Monday 20th August inclusive. The Glow Status page will be updated with this information. Please share this information with staff as they will not have access to Yammer during this time.
