Professional Learning

Dear Colleagues

On Wednesday 6th March, Carnoustie High School are hosting a professional learning session led by educational outreach staff from the Perimeter Institute in Canada.

With the support of the Institute of Physics and SSERC the event is free to attend.  The Carnoustie workshop is one of four held across Scotland (Ayr, Elgin, Dunfermline).

The workshops will use materials from two of their resource packs related to the teaching of the science behind, and evidence for, climate change.

  • Perimeter Inspirations 07: Temperature Rising
  • Perimeter Inspirations 10: Evidence for Climate Change

These were originally written with Ontario government funding to align with the Ontario science curriculum but like all Perimeter materials are not really curriculum specific but contain lots of different activities that you can pick and choose from and which can be slotted into any curriculum.  The materials are written for children from primary 6 to secondary 3 in age and the workshops will be suitable for primary as well as biology, chemistry and physics, geography teachers and provide useful activities for interdisciplinary learning work.

The activities covered include experiments about heat transfer, modelling activities, lots of good graphing and data analysis activities, looking at the pros and cons of electric and petrol cars, and even an activity to estimate the carbon trapped in a tree.

Tickets can be ordered from free at the Eventbright link.

SLF 2016 Angus Teachmeet

With the beginning of a new year I’m sure everyone is beginning to think about their practice and what they can do in the coming year. As you may have read in an earlier post the Scottish Learning Festival are promoting teachmeets across Scotland on 21st September. The Angus one is being held in Langlands Primary School between 5pm and 7pm. This is a great opportunity for teachers, managers and Early Years staff to come along and share practice, as well as getting some new ideas for the year ahead. You can come along and speak for either 2 or 7 minutes about a topic of your choice or simply come along and listen to what is going on. We have people talking about flipped classrooms, classdojo, PE SALS for infants and more.

If you would like to sign up, please follow the link below and complete the relevant fields.
