Eid celebrations

We have been celebrating Eid in nursery!

A small group of parents volunteered their time to help us find out more about Eid.  They read us a lovely story to help us understand why and when Eid is celebrated.  They also decorated the nursery.  Many of us wore special clothes as part of the celebrations.

We had a special Eid themed snack.  We ate naan breads, korma sauce and rice.  It was delicious.

Please let the nursery staff know if there are any festivities that you would like us to celebrate in nursery.

Problem Solving – how can we get the coconut open?

We enjoy playing with real foods in our different play contexts.  This can encourage greater learning than playing with plastic foods.  Today it prompted an excellent opportunity for some practical problem solving.

Luca had noticed that the coconuts were noisy if you shook them next to your ear.  This prompted a lengthy discussion about what might be inside.  The children decided that we should open the coconut to find out.  This proved to be really challenging.

It was wonderful to see the children cooperating and using a trial and error approach to get the coconut to open.  They tried bashing it with various resources they found within the nursery, smashed it onto the table and dropped it onto the floor.  They soon decided that they needed a hammer.  A small group of children (with the help of the ladies in the office) borrowed the janitors hammer.  They were all eager to have a go at striking the coconut.  They listened well to follow the safety rules and were able to suggest how to keep safe when using a real tool.  They were shocked to learn that even the hammer would not break the hard coconut shell.  At this point, they decided we should smash the coconut on a harder floor.  They thought that grass would be too soft but were eager to try the concrete.

We ventured outside into the pouring rain and took it in turns to throw the coconut onto the concrete floor.  We finally managed to crack the coconut! We were all delighted! We persevered and kept smashing the coconut into smaller pieces.  We were all surprised at how strong the hard coconut shell was.  We spoke about why the coconut needed such a hard shell.  We decided that the coconut would not be safe to eat – we had smashed it on muddy, wet slabs.  We are eager to get more coconut to taste. We spoke about what we could do with the coconut shells.  Annabelle thought she would like some shell pieces in the sand.  Tabitha thought it would be good to have coconut shell in the playdough.

Chinese New Year

We have been celebrating Chinese New Year this week!

We watched these videos to help us learn what this celebration is about.  After watching the videos, we made a plan of all the things we could do for Chinese New Year.  We plan to paint Chinese letters, make flags, make lanterns and use red and yellow playdough.  (We found out that these are lucky colours!)  We also want to add Chinese costumes and artefacts to our music area and the house corner.  We also plan to do a Chinese dragon dance!  Please ask us more about Chinese New Year.

We will also be eating Chinese snacks all this week for snack.

Talking Tubs

Our nursery topics are planned, led and recorded by the children.  We hope to have a parental event to tell you more about this soon!

The nursery staff observe what the children say, make and do in their play.  They identify key areas of interest for groups of children.  This could be an interest in dinosaurs, making ‘food’ in the house corner, exploring ice, animals, etc.

Groups of children who are particularly eager about a certain topic would be given the opportunity to plan this topic using a ‘Talking Tub’.  The ‘Talking Tub’ is full of objects related to the topic which will stimulate conversation.  This can help the children share what they already know and what they want to know.  It also allows staff to identify any misconceptions the children may have.  This discussion will form the basis of the plan for the topic.

The children who were involved in using the ‘Talking Tub’ will record their learning using a ‘Big Book’.  These are also available for parents/carers to look at.  Please read them next time you are dropping off/collecting.  You will find them opposite the nursery sign-in boards.

Following a pictorial recipe

This term we have been learning to make our own playdough in our newly designed playdough area.  We use a pictorial recipe to help us make the playdough with very little adult help.  This is a fantastic opportunity for us to develop important early literacy and numeracy skills.  Please ask your child more about this.

 

Babies!

The afternoon children have been very interested in playing with babies in the newly revamped house corner.  With the help of Mrs Ogilvie, they used a talking tub – please see additional information at the top of the page – to plan a babies topic.  They brought in photographs of themselves as a baby and talked about the changes that had happened to themselves and their friends.  They also suggested that real babies should be brought to nursery to help them learn more about caring for a baby.

Caring for living things

The morning children have been showing an interest in the animals in our garden.  A small group of children who were particularly interested were given an opportunity to plan a ‘Garden Animals’ topic – see the ‘Talking Tub’ information at the top of the page.

The children have been keeping a tally of all the animals that we see in our garden.  The most popular animal is a seagull! The children are keen to encourage more robins and ‘cuter birds’ to our garden.  They have been making a range of bird feeders to help encourage this.

When learning about the difficulty the birds face when finding food in the winter, the children expressed concern about the rabbits.  They researched which foods were healthy for rabbits and were surprised to learn that carrots should only be given occasionally!  They lovingly prepared a range of healthy options for the rabbits and hid them in ‘secret’ places around our garden.

We have been documenting our learning in our planning books in nursery – please look at these next time you are in nursery.

We would welcome any bird experts who would be willing to talk about bird watching/feeding birds to the nursery children.

Feedback from the recent audit

Thank you to those parents who took the time to complete the nursery audit this week.  We always welcome feedback from families and use it to develop the nursery further.  We will display the feedback in nursery soon.

The feedback suggests that parents are unsure where to find the nursery development plan, policies and the big planning books.  The development plan can be found on the wall adjacent to the key worker display.  It shows the key development for nursery this session.  Please take a moment to read it next time you are in.  Feel free to ask staff for further information.  The nursery policies and key documents can be found underneath the development plan.

The nursery planning books are full of wonderful photographs, drawing and writing examples from recent topics.  They also explain which areas of the curriculum topics are focussing on.  You will find these opposite the nursery sign-in boards.  Again, please ask staff for further information, if required.

Little Scientists

We are learning about scientific changes when we participate in experiments.  We used lemonade and polos to make a volcanic reaction.  We experimented with different numbers of polos to determine if it made a difference to the height and the frothiness of our volcanoes.

Christmas celebrations – food

As mentioned in previous posts, the children are interested in the type of food that is eaten at Christmas.  The main focus for our Christmas topic is food, baby Jesus and decorations.  You can find out more about our Christmas plans in our planning books.  These are opposite the sign-in boards in nursery.

The parent focus groups also expressed an interest in more baking activities and the children have been delighted to participate in baking activities.

On Tuesday the children decorated Christmas biscuits. They loved experimenting with the different colours, tastes and textures they could create.

On Wednesday the children had a ‘Christmas Dinner Taster’ for snack.  They tasted roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, Brussel sprouts and gravy.  They spoke about their likes and dislikes as they the tasted different foods.  They were supported to use a fork and knife correctly.  Please feel free to develop this further at home.

 

The afternoon children had the option to make Christmas chocolate as a special treat.  They melted chocolate and use a variety of colours and toppings to make it more interesting.  They enjoyed having sneaky tastes when Mrs Duncan wasn’t looking!  The afternoon children taste tested the Christmas chocolate as a reward for trying new Christmas foods.  (The morning children will do this soon).
