Outdoor fun this week

We have had very busy outdoor week this week.  Following on from our interest in building last week  we started using real tools this week.  We have been carefully using hammers and nails to ‘fix’ items in the garden.  Many of the children have requested that we get more tools and we are currently looking into this.

You could extend this at home by getting your child to help you fix items around the house.

Please note:  as we are now uploading observations onto your child’s personal profile (Interactive learning diary) we will be doing slightly less blog updates.  Please see your child’s tray for your login for the Interactive learning diary.  Returning parents: your log ins from last year should still work.  Please let me know if they don’t.

Physical Friday

We will be focusing on physical skills every Friday.  Today we developed our skills in throwing, catching and kicking, tried to balance and climb, used tennis rackets and pedaled frantically in the playground! It was lots of fun and has given the nursery staff ideas for future physical development.  We definitely have a few Andy Murray’s in the making! 🙂

Our slide!

The morning boys worked together to make a slide for the balance log in the garden.  They persevered with challenges when it kept collapsing and worked well as a team by sharing their ideas.  They drew a plan using chalk to help them decide what it should look like.  They decided that the slide must have a side to it so ‘you don’t fall out.’  They kept themselves safe by choosing to wear hard helmets! 🙂

Beetleland!

We (encouraged by Finlay)  have renamed our stone pit ‘Beetleland’ after finding several beetles today.  We looked under stones and logs to find beetles, worms, spiders and ants.  The ground was very dry so we decided to add some water to make it wet.  We found out that some minibeasts like wet ground better.  We had great fun using our senses to observe the minibeasts that we had found.

Our Assault Courses

We have been busy creating our own assault courses in both the morning and afternoon classes.  We have been  developing our skills in checking our assault courses are safe and have been talking to each other to share ideas.  We have also been experimenting with how we can use our arm and leg movements to increase the distance we can jump off our assault courses.  We hope to build on this in the coming days and weeks.

Den building

Next time you are in the garden make sure you have a look at the fantastic dens some of the afternoon boys have been working on over the last few days.  They have been using sticks, rope and hammers to build their den.  They made a fire using stones and kept themselves safe by wearing high vis vests and helmets.

They worked hard as team and had to solve problems and persevere when the den kept collapsing.  Well done boys!

We plan to build on this indoors using natural materials in our construction area.

Our new nursery friend!

We all made a new nursery friend today – a frog! We were absolutely delighted when Frank, the janitor, brought through a frog that he had found in the playground.  We all enjoyed watching the frog hop around and spoke in depth about its features.  Both the morning and afternoon children took care of it by carefully providing him with a pool and rocks.  Michael decided we needed some frog books  for the story corner and we also have toy frogs in the water tray.  We hope to share these stories in the next few days.
