Newtonmore 2018 Day one

We’ve arrived safe and sound. A quick post for the moment to let you all know we’ve had a great first day getting to know Newtonmore, Craigower Lodge and our ace team of instructors. We’re away to the Gorge tomorrow to do the zip wire, abseiling and gorge walking.

Science Fair 2018

Congratulations to Chloe, Hannah and Danielle who were awarded Second overall place in the City Wide Intertek Science Fair held at the Aberdeen University Biodiversity Centre. They had been chosen alongside Mary, Aqsa and Aiyana to represent Scotstown. Both groups did really well and impressed the judges with how well they could talk about their experiments. Well done girls!

Science Fair 2018

On Friday 18th May we went to the city wide Science Fair at the Biodiversity Centre to represent Scotstown school along with another group. We had presented our investigation to Mr Mundie and we were picked to go along to the final alongside other schools.

When we went in we were given a timetable to follow and we went to the botanical garden first. It had beautiful scenery and we thought the maze was good fun. We then got to look round the museum and look at all the stuffed animals. The animals were cool and the fur was really soft and nice. We were then given refreshments.

Finally it was time for the judging!! We spoke about our project as we presented our investigation. It was called Magical Molten Ice-Cream. We chose this because it sounded like a really good (and tasty!) topic. We wanted to explore how adding more methyl cellulose affects the melting point of ice cream. The judges asked us lots of questions and we explained all about our experiment.

All the groups then went to the lecture theatre for the prize giving. We were shocked to hear own group’s name announced as the Second placed team. We were delighted and proudly took our shiny silver star award to let our classmates see.

P7 Scotstown School

Next Gen Science

We had lots of visitors in school from Next Gen Science to show our P7 pupils how awesome engineering is. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to present and deliver workshops. The P7s really enjoyed their afternoon and I’m sure this will inspire a future generation of scientists and engineers…and the cake was delicious too.

Our generous neighbours

A huge thank you to our very generous neighbours, the Co-op who, to celebrate the official opening of their newly refurbished store, gave the school a cheque for £500. To say thank you and let the staff know how much we appreciate this, Lily, Connor and Will went down to the shop to hand over a thank you card we made. The school will use the money for a new mural that will be painted by a local artist on one of the outer school walls. This way lots of people in the school community can share and appreciate this.

Ultimate Judo

We were lucky enough to receive some judo taster sessions from Gordon McCathie, Head Coach from Ultimate Judo. Each class from P1 to P7 had an opportunity to try out some of the special techniques used in judo. Gordon runs classes at the Alex Collie Centre and has invited the children to come along if they enjoyed the session. If you want more details, check out the website www.ultimatejudo.co.uk. A huge thanks to Gordon for coming in and spending the whole day at Scotstown. We loved it!

Pittodrie visit and posters!

Our Girls football team and their coaches Mr and Mrs Allan were invited along to a tour of Pittodrie stadium this week. This visit was part of the Redstart programme Aberdeen FC have been delivering in school. The girls and coaches really enjoyed their visit. They got to see around the stadium and even had a go in the press room. Emma has definitely got what it takes to face the press! Each pupil in Primary 1 through to Primary 7 also received an AFC first team poster. A huge thanks to the team at Aberdeen Football Club, for their coaching, hospitality and their very generous gift. Even the Celtic fan was impressed with this!

PSQM Gold Science Award

We were delighted to receive our Gold level PSQM Science award at a ceremony recently held at Aberdeen Science Centre. The Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) is an award given to schools to celebrate the high profile and quality of science teaching, learning and leadership in primary schools. Lee, Sean, Chloe and Aiyana were on hand to pick up the award and also got to enjoy some activities (and cake!) in the Centre. Well done to everyone at Scotstown, as this was definitely a team effort in receiving such a prestigious award. A huge thank you also goes to Fiona Saunders, our Hub Leader who went the extra mile to help us achieve this. Look out soon for some more exciting Science news as we prepare for our Science/Eco week, Science Champions and the Science Fair.

Rotary Quiz 2018

Well done to our P7 Rotary Quiz team who performed very well at the event held at Oldmachar Academy. In a very close contest, Scotstown came a very creditable 3rd place out of the 7 Bridge of Don schools. Congratulations to the Braehead team who were crowned this year’s winners. Only a few points separated the first three teams so well done to Luke, Calum, Danielle and Eishah (and Charlie our reserve) for doing so well. We’re proud of you.

Sooyang Do sessions

A huge thank you to Colleen, Sooyang Do martial arts instructor, for coming in all day to work with P4 – P7 classes. The children really enjoyed their sessions. I walked through the hall, passing most classes during their sessions and I was really impressed at the effort everyone was making-the punch bag was taking some beatings. Well done to everyone, especially to Colleen for working tirelessly with all 6 classes…and still smiling at the end.
