Thank you to everyone who contributed to our school charity collection for Socks For The Street. Mrs Hardie dropped off our collection this week to the Cyrenians and they were very grateful. Hopefully we have made a difference to someone else’s Christmas.
Christmas Performances
Well done to all the children and staff who put on two great performances over the last two days. The boys and girls certainly put a lot of smiles on faces with “Our First Nativity” and our Christmas Singalong. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the silver collection that took in £245 for the Scottish SPCA. A well deserved whole school cinema trip awaits courtesy of the Parent Council – Thank you.
Emotion Coaching for parents
We recently held an Emotion Coaching session for parents from Scotstown and Braehead. This approach helps children to understand the different emotions they experience and how to manage them. Thank you to all the parents who attended and hopefully found the session informative and useful. Also, thank you to Alison Mathers, educational psychologist and student Katie Sprang for delivering the session. The feedback we received from this was very positive. If anyone would like more information about Emotion Coaching please contact the school.

Fairtrade School Uniform
As we are a Fairtrade school we would like to offer parents an alternative means of purchasing school uniform through another website that offers the same type of school uniform but has been manufactured with Fairtrade cotton.
Please see the information below and follow the web links to see and order these products. Please note that the school will still be using the original supplier of uniform as well as this alternative supplier.
Fairtrade Cotton School Uniform
Scotstown School is introducing an ethically manufactured school uniform made with Fairtrade Cotton, available online from Koolskools (see below).
WHY FAIRTRADE COTTON SCHOOL UNIFORM?
- There is no difference in quality between Fairtrade cotton and normal cotton. Fairtrade cotton means that we can be sure that the farmers who grow the cotton receive a fair and sustainable payment for their crop. Their communities also receive a premium for projects such as building schools, hospitals, access to clean water and so on.
- Being “Fairtrade Cotton Certified” means that all parts of the manufacturing process of the Fairtrade cotton garments have been inspected and audited. The factories are signed up to Fairtrade Minimum Standards, designed to ensure that practices such as child labour and enforced overtime/long working hours don’t exist.
WHY KOOLSKOOLS?
- Over the past 8 years Koolskools have built an internationally renowned ethical clothing company, and are working with schools all over the UK.
- Koolskools is the only school uniform provider in the UK offering a complete range of garments made with Fairtrade cotton. Our research has proved that they offer quality and value-for-money garments which are all double stitched, easy iron, and durable 50% cotton/50% polyester mix.
- Koolskools also work with schools all over the UK offering presentations to children of all ages about ethical and fair trading. The idea is that if the school embraces school uniform made with Fairtrade cotton, then our students are given the opportunity to learn all about the ethical trading story behind it.

Bridge of Don Remembers
Over the last few weeks we have been involved in the Bridge of Don Remembers project that was organised to mark the centenary of the Armistice at the end of World War I. Across the school and in the community, the children have been involved in lots of activities relating to this project and there have been some amazing pieces of work produced.
Some of the pupil council and HWB representatives attended a special service at St Columba’s Church. We have had classes visiting the War memorial and the Poppy tree in Westfield Park. The girls, who are in Miss Hamilton’s choir, beautifully sang a collection of songs at the Legion to some of the members. There will be a display of some of the artwork produced, including the fantastic art installation, for parents to see during parent interviews this week.
The Bridge of Don Remembers project culminated in a very poignant service at the Balgownie War memorial on Remembrance Sunday. It was lovely to see so many members of the community help make this event such a memorable and special occasion. Here are some photos of the service on Remembrance Sunday where Charley and Callum in P7 did a great job representing the school by laying crosses and the school wreath at the memorial. .

Peter Pan flies into Scotstown
The new term was kicked off Panto style today as M&M Theatre performed Peter Pan to the P1 to P7 classes. The children really enjoyed the Pantomime and even Mr Mundie’s terrible dancing didn’t spoil the show!

Open Day
It was great to see so many visitors into the school on Friday for our Open Day event. As you can see from the photos, classrooms were very busy with the children showing any visitors around or in some cases putting them to work! Thank you to those who offered some stories for the Bridge of Don remembers project. These will be very useful as part of our topic work. Also, thank you to all who took part in our Twitter survey. The results were Yes – 112 to No – 20. It looks like I’ll be learning how to tweet very soon.
