On Thursday the 31st of October, Halloween, Strone Primary’s p5 to 7s took part in a pageant in partnership with Argyll Mausoleum. We were taking part in this Pageant so that people buried in Kilmun graveyard would be remembered.
Leading up to the Pageant, Ann Galliard and Fiona Lochhead came and talked to us about interesting people who are buried in the graveyard. We all had to think of well known people from the past and research their life stories. It was interesting to find out about the famous people in the graveyard.

Strone Eco Reps visit the Scottish Parliament on Holyrood Apple Day
On Wednesday 18th October, 3 of our Eco Committee attended the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh for Holyrood Apple Day. We went with Merle from the Ardentinny Walled Garden Project to present apples picked from the garden. We had new varieties as well as apples from the old Victorian apple tree in the garden.

Strone Primary Parents Evening – Strone Gallery Opening
Strone Primary School had a very successful Open Evening last week. It was a chance for the children to showcase all their hard work over the past term. We were also able to give parents a wee taster of our Friday afternoon skills clubs. We have been learning ukulele, and keyboard skills and we also had a Forest and Beach club that went out each week, taking the curriculum outdoors.

Zoolab visit to Strone Primary School
On Monday 18th March, Alannah from Zoolab visited us as part of our Eco Schools programme. She brought lots of interesting mini beasts including Hissing Cockroaches, Rats, Snakes, Millipedes, Tarantulas and a Tree Frog.
She talked to us about Paper and Deforestation, Mining in the Rainforest, Energy Saving, Acid Rain and Climate Change. We loved learning this way and Alannah and the animals were great.
Red Nose Day
On Friday 15th March, Strone Primary held their Red Nose Day event. We all wore something red, some of our pupils dyed their hair red, others had red shoes or items of clothing.
For our lunch we had our favourite lunch with red biscuits and we attempted red custard although it turned out more a muddy brown than red!
We had great fun and enjoyed raising money for charity.
Chinese New Year at Strone Primary School
On Thursday the 21st February, Xin a lady from Shanghai in China came to Strone Primary school to talk to us about how they celebrated Chinese New Year in China.
We had an assembly in the morning and Xin talked to us about Chinese culture. She showed us pictures of people celebrating Chinese New Year and talked to us about the Chinese zodiac, the Great Wall of China and told us how to say ‘Happy New Year’. Stable Manners at Strone.
Strone Primary School’s recent performance of the Musical Nativity, “Stable Manners” was a huge success thanks to the hard work of the children, staff and Parent Council. The children brought their characters alive for the audience who tapped their toes to the lively music and catchy songs. Thanks to the hard work of the Parent Council and the local community we were able to hold the two performances in the Highgate Hall in Strone which ensured a well supported community event. Many thanks to all those who gave their support in donating lighting, sound equipment, haybales, props, cleaning materials and elbow grease! It was very much appreciated.
Farewell Mrs Pierson
Our last day of term has been a very sad day for all of us at Strone Primary School. We had a wonderful end of term Christmas Assembly in Strone Church, but had to say a very sad farewell to our lovely Mrs Pierson. She will be greatly missed by children and staff alike.
She has been an inspiration to us all, keeping us on our toes with her enthusiasm, dedication, kindly ways and wicked wit!! We wish both her and her husband a very happy and adventurous retirement.
Christmas Shopping at Strone – Maths in Context!
Representatives from our Primary 4-7 classes at Strone Primary School went to the local supermarket today to buy food for the school Christmas party. We all chose the food that we wanted and then the group used their maths skills to make sure that we stayed within our budget and made the most of all the 2 for 1 offers in the supermarket. We used our mental maths skills then checked with a calculator. We used our skills in multiplication, division, fractions and problem solving to make the most of our money. It was tricky to keep a track of everything we bought, but we did very well and even had 50p left over! We hope everyone will enjoy the lovely food we bought, at our party tomorrow.
Strone Primary Fundraising Success
Strone Primary School celebrated Children in Need this year by coming to school in spots and jammies and enjoying a special lunch prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff. We raised £68.28 through donations and finding Pudsey on his tour of Britain. Congratulations to Cameron – who found him at Windsor Castle.
Strone’s Soup and Sandwich Saturday
On Saturday the 17th November, Strone Primary School in partnership with their Parent Council, held their annual Soup and Sandwich event in the Younger Memorial Hall. The school, together with the Parent Council had worked hard to organise this ever popular event which was very well supported by the local community.
There was a great turn out to enjoy the delicious soups on offer and the pupils were on hand to man cake and candy stalls and sell Christmas related craft items that they had made. The event raised in excess of £600.00 which will be used to support the children’s education.
Strone Primary’s Twin Munro Bagging Champs
If you’ve been reading the national press lately you may have seen two of Strone Primary School’s record breaking celebrity pupils!
Our P7 twins, Nuala and Cliona have just completed all 282 munros, breaking records for being the youngest twins, as well as the youngest Scottish girls to complete the challenge. They completed the 282 together with mum and dad, Neil and Diane, and their dog, Aonach. The girls started their challenge when they were just four years old, and have been travelling around Scotland ever since, in their quest to “bag” them all.
‘Bridges to Schools’ from Strone
Strone Primary pupils took part in an activity based session where they constructed a 12m long cable-stayed bridge, and then walked across the bridge. Pupils learned about civil engineering and the importance of team work and communication when they were dressed in their safety clothes – hard hat and fluorescent jacket – and worked in 2 groups, with the help of real civil engineers, to construct their side of the bridge. The sessions were run by Glasgow and West of Scotland branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers and are designed to raise awareness of civil engineering and encourage some to see it as a possible career.
The sessions were free and were a highly enjoyable, educational and motivational culmination of the Bridges topic for P4-7. For further information contact Strone Primary or ice.org.uk/Scotland/education.
