Both teachers and pupils of Tobermory High School took to the floor recently for another fantastic St Andrew’s Day ceilidh, organised by the S3s. The afternoon was filled with lots of wonderful performances by The Traditional Group, Carys Christine and the pipers, along with lots and lots of ceilidh dancing! The S3s are currently raising money for their Paris trip and so this year there were delicious homemade pizzas and cakes for sale. There was also face painting available and many pupils proudly opted for the traditional Scotland flag. Lots of fun was had by all.

Tobermory High goes ‘International’
The annual International House event took place the last week in November. There is a different country each day and Houses earn points by answering questions about their country with a question for each year group and a lunchtime challenge where Houses gather as many participants as possible to take part. This year the chosen countries were Mexico, New Zealand, Italy, Japan. As is traditional St Andrew’s Day was represented by some of the countries of which St Andrew is patron saint including, of course, Scotland. Continue reading Tobermory High goes ‘International’
Tobermory High River Study
S3 Geography pupils from Tobermory High School recently braved the cold weather to complete a river study. This involved taking measurements on a local section of river and using calculations to work out the river’s speed. Pupils measured the width of the river, the speed of the river, angle of slope and used Powers’ scale of roundness to examine the bedload. They will now use the raw data they collected out in the field, back in class, to enhance their processing and information handling techniques. Continue reading Tobermory High River Study
Film G
At the beginning of November, FilmG came to Tobermory High School to work with Gaelic/Gàidhlig students in S2, S4 and S6. The students had written two different scripts during class time on the theme of ‘Hunger/Desire.’ The FilmG crew spent a week working with the students on filming and editing. The films will be entered in the FilmG Gaelic Short Films Competition. A fantastic time was had by all and everyone is looking forward to taking part again next year. Continue reading Film G
S3 French Poetry
S3 French in Tobermory have been studying French poetry, mainly the works of Jacques Prévert. They took advantage of the sunshine and beautiful autumn colours to go to Aros Park and take photos to illustrate one of Préverts most famous poems “les feuilles mortes” as well as a couple of other autumnal poems. Two groups chose to take images to represent “les feuilles mortes” in which the sight of the dead leaves prompts memories of a time in a man’s (or a woman’s!)life when they were in a happy relationship which is now over. Other groups took photos of the autumn colours to represent the poem “les saisons”. The colours and scenery are stunning and the class have brought the poems to life with some images which demonstrate understanding of the poems and are now working on displaying their work as poetic posters. RME on Iona
In the first of this year’s RME days 54 S1/2 pupils and 7 staff from Tobermory High School spent the day on Iona learning about the history of Iona and the life and work of the Iona Community. The day was the RME part of inter-disciplinary work on Life in 6th Century Scotland. The group looked at why Columba chose to settle on Iona and why thousands of tourists and pilgrims flock there every year. In St Oran’s Chapel they learned about the life of the early monks before exploring the cemetery where Scottish Kings and politicians are buried. Continue reading RME on Iona
Tobermory High School – ACE trip
S1 pupils from Tobermory High School, accompanied by four of their teachers, recently visited Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling as part of their induction programme. This annual trip allows new S1 pupils to get to know each other as well as to visit places and attend workshops relating to the course work they cover in S1. On the trip pupils chose books for the school library in Oban, visited Summerlee wind farm, St. Mungo’s museum, Glasgow Science Centre, The National Museum of Scotland, The National Gallery, Our Dynamic Earth, Stirling Castle and The Scottish Parliament. Pupils were fortunate enough to meet Michael Russell, our MSP, and Jamie McGrigor for a question and answer session after a tour of the parliament buildings. Tobermory High School wins Siobhan Dowd Trust ‘Joy of Reading’ Competition.
Tobermory High School is one of 10 schools across the UK to win a £1000 prize in the Siobhan Dowd Trust’s “Spread the Joy of Reading” Campaign (www.siobhandowdtrust.com) Schools were invited to share initiatives which have encouraged reading and a love of books.

Tobermory High – Digging up the Past at the Baliscate Chapel Excavation
Like other schools on Mull, P3-S2 pupils from Tobermory High recently visited the Baliscate archaeological site for an opportunity to talk to the archaeologists, ask questions and see this fascinating find right on our doorstep.
Secondary pupils took part in a simulated dig in class, before they went to understand how an archaeologist works. The visit links in with the work secondary pupils complete in Social Subjects and RME on Christianity and Columba.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin
A group of 40 Tobermory High School pupils, ranging from P4 – S6, recently took to the stage to deliver their annual school show. The cast delivered two polished performances in the Aros Hall, Tobermory, in front of two packed houses. The production was directed by Social Subjects teacher, Ryan Lowe, ably supported by many members of staff and the wider community. The cast will be singing a selection of songs at the school’s annual Celebration of Achievement, which marks the end of term. Bravo to all involved!

Tobermory and Tiree High Schools Visit Paris and Ypres
S3/4 students from Tobermory and Tiree High Schools bonded on a recent trip to Paris and Ypres. They spent the day at Euro Disney where Space Mountain was the most popular ride (with students!). All pupils and staff also managed the exhausting climb up the 264 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the Arc de Triomphe where they had a more unusual view of the Eternal Flame as well as stunning views of the Champs Elysées and the Eiffel Tower. ‘Composition to Exhibition’ in Tobermory
‘Composition to Exhibition’ is a visual arts and music collaborative project aimed at secondary pupils. After visiting Islay, Bute and Tiree the Creative Arts in Schools Team (CAST) held a two day workshop on Mull offering pupils from Tobermory High the opportunity to work with a musician and two visual artists.
The concept for the project is ‘recognising and celebrating potential opportunities for our islands through harnessing natural energy sources in particular tidal/wave energy.’ We have reflected this concept by focusing throughout on applying modern technologies such as film, sequencing and digital art to craft/art and music.
