On Wednesday 30th March the children of Sandbank Primary and Pre-5 Unit enjoyed a Science Fun Day. The day blasted off with a whole school assembly about Fantastic Forces. Some pupils were pushed, pulled and stretched in the name of science as they explored the effects of friction and gravity.
Heads were sent spinning learning how gyroscopes help space craft move in Space, where there is no gravity. Later, Tom in Primary 6 described his favourite experiment saying ‘Archie lay down on the floor and Mrs Reid swung a bucket of water over him. The water didn’t fall out of the bucket because of centrifugal force.’
After an hour of falling weights, rockets, spinning chairs and buckets, the assembly ended and the children then returned to their classes to further investigate forces. Primaries 1&2 painted pictures using magnets, Primaries 3&4 made rocket launchers, while the older pupils had a balloon race.
In the afternoon the pupils joined their House groups for more fun activities. They learned about air resistance and buoyancy by building egg parachutes and unsinkable boats. Engineers of the future designed and built sturdy bridges and working torches. Mums and dads were able to join their children in the activities and everyone had a great time. In the words of Alfie in P6 ‘I hope there is another day like this!
The staff of Sandbank Primary thanks all the children and parents who took part and look forward to the next science Fun Day.
