London 2012 – Olympic Games

In July last year Amy from Campbeltown Grammar school, saw her Scottish design become a winner of the Get Set London 2012 design competition. Amy’s creation has become an official regional version of “Mandeville”, the London 2012 Mascot.

We now have some more brilliant news!  Glasgow City Council is going to construct a 6ft sculpture of the Scottish Mandeville as part of its City Look Programme to decorate the city ready for the London 2012 Games!

The sculpture will be built near one of two central stations but the exact location is yet to be decided.  A similar Wenlock sculpture will be built at one of the two stations and the pieces will welcome visitors to Glasgow and celebrate Scotland’s role in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Port Ellen Animation…update

Primary 3&4 have been very busy this term learning all about polar lands for their topic.  They found out about the different creatures that live there, what the climate is like and how the weather affects the animals and people who live there.

Catherine McCaig’s Trust: Gaelic Writing Competition

The Catherine McCaig Trust’s annual writing competition awards for endeavour in Gaelic writing combined with creativity in the use of ICT, Art and Music and aims to encourage our young people to develop their skills in Gaelic, relevant to 21st Century Gaelic education. The competition seeks entries from pupils in Gaelic Medium and Gaelic Learners Education. In its third year, entries continue to increase and improve in quality and the judges, from the Universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, continue to be impressed with the standard received from Argyll and Bute schools. Khan Academy

Every so often a new website pops up that seems like a game-changer. I am completely bowled over by the online teaching resources and the underpinning approach of the Khan Academy. Their mission is to make quality teaching available to anyone, anywhere in the world and they have received 1.5 million dollars from the Gates Foundation to help them achieve it. Aimed at older learners, Secondary school and beyond, they are rapidly adding to a bank of virtual whiteboard lessons mainly on maths, sciences and the humanities, but the list of lessons is already huge and growing rapidly. If you are a Secondary teacher in any of these areas, you cannot miss this site, it shows how teaching can be shared worldwide.
