Wow what a braw wee party we had on Tuesday in P4. We had a Ceilidh dance, a variety of musical performers and some speeches in the Big Hall. When we went down to the small hall for our Burns Supper we had the poem ‘Ode to a Haggis’ and the Selkirk Grace. Our meal consisted of soup, followed by Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. For dessert we had our Shortbread which we had made the previous day with Mrs Warren.

Nursery News This Week So Far…

This week we started our ‘People Who Help Us’ project and so far the children have been really keen to learn about all the different jobs people do to help us in the community.  On Monday we had Olivia’s mum come in and talk to us about her job as a nurse at the Edinburgh Sick Kids Hospital.  The children enjoyed being volunteer patients and nurses and asked some good questions. We would love to hear from any other parents who would be willing to come and talk to the children about their jobs.

The children decided that they would like their role play area to become a hairdressers so the staff have enjoyed many a ‘pampering session’ with some very creative budding hairdressers!  Our outdoor role play area has become a Pizza Restaurant with delivery service at the request of a few children who came up with the idea of delivering Pizzas on the bikes.  We made some pizzas at the creative table for our role play and even made some real pizzas for snack – delicious!

The creative area has been busy this week.  The children have been making doctor’s bags, x-ray pictures and have been designing many a junk model masterpiece.  We always welcome donations of junk modelling material.

More exciting news coming soon…

Scripture Union workshops in P7

P7 were visited by Gavin who worked with us on the value of tolerance through a Scripture Union workshop. We discussed what tolerance means to us and how it is a value that is important both at school, at home and in the wider community. We also explored how this value is found in the Bible through looking at some Christian stories. We worked together to share our ideas and listen to those of others. We are really looking forward to the Primary 5 assembly on this value!

Primary 3a Outdoor Maths

Primary 3a braved the cold this morning and went outside for a maths lesson!  The playground was out-of-bounds due to the ice, but luckily the field was safe.  We are learning about Position and Movement in Maths Topic, and today we were giving and following directions around the field with a partner, using turns and forward steps (and backwards ones sometimes!).  We were very happy to have the extra space outside for this task, and the fresh air helped to keep our brains active for a Monday morning.

Scottish Week in Nursery

We have been learning some great Scottish songs – ‘The Shoogly Woogly’ which would be the Hokey Cokey and ‘Heid, shouders, knaps and taes’ which is head, shoulders, knees and toes. Our favourite word was ‘lugs’. We have also read some lovely Scottish stories from the Hairy Maclary, Katie Morag and Hamish McHaggis series. By the end of the week many children could talk about the Scottish flag, speak some Scots, identify some iconic Scottish objects and know who Robert Burns was.

Williamston Breakfast Club – Shake Up Your Wake Up!

Breakfast Shake up your Wake up pic

All this week the children coming along to our Breakfast Club were trying new things as part of the Breakfast Week ‘Shake Up Your Wake Up’. Breakfast included fruit juices, pain au chocolat, croissants, ham and cheese, fresh pancakes, homemade fritatta, a selection of bagels, eggy bread, cereal, fruits and yogurts. Staff and Parents were also encouraged to come along and join in.

Help Grow Your Brain.

Breakfast replenishes glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to work properly.  Studies have shown that eating breakfast can improve concentration and recall and it can also change our mood, lowering stress levels and making us happier.  It has even been linked to improvement in attainment and behaviour.  For the brain to work at its best it needs energy, so start your day with a good breakfast. Shake up your wake up!

P6 completed their WW1 ‘shoebox trenches’ with great success! The results were fantastic and the process even more fun! Our technology skills were most definitely explored as we solved problems, constructed and worked collaboratively to create our trenches. We are very proud of them! We will continue to learn more about WW1 throughout the rest of the year; so far, learning about trench life has been very interesting and engaging!

P4 Author Workshop (3)

We have had our fourth workshop with author Mary Turner-Thomson. Mary had put all our ideas together to create two characters called Bob and Cerrin and so we then started to think about the storyline for the book. We worked in groups to think of ideas for the story and what might happen at the beginning, middle and end. We tried to include a Scottish theme to the story. Over the next few weeks we will continue to edit the story and then we will illustrate it. There is a lot of hard work ahead now but we think it will be worth it! And we are looking forward to working with our partners in Mumbai and finding out their characters and ideas.
