Fairtrade Fortnight 29th February – 13th March 2016

The Fairtrade Pupil Leadership Group have been very busy getting ready for Fairtrade Fortnight. We have been making posters to let the school know what we have planned, we delivered an assembly to the whole school to launch it and we have been coming up with questions for the Fairtrade and breakfast themed quiz!

The International Pupil Leadership Group have also been busy making information leaflets about where our food comes from.

Please see the attached information about events and activities happening at Williamston Primary School during Fairtrade Fortnight.

We will keep you posted with updates, information and photographs!

An update from the Fairtrade group

Hello we are the Fairtrade group and we have been busy working on some ideas of how we can promote Fairtrade Fortnight at Williamston. We have already decided on group roles and expectations. Our Chairperson is Kiera, our link person is Craig, our Treasurer is Rowan and our Secretary is Shay. We have also created pledges which helped us to think about what commitments we will make to our group and school. We have also designed badges for our group. Our link person has been working with the P3,2 and 1 group to set them tasks and challenges. We have a floor book that we write in each week to share our ideas and learning.

Christmas fun with our buddies

Yesterday afternoon P7 really enjoyed spending time with their P1 buddies. We prepared two craft activities for our buddies to complete and we were very impressed with what a lovely job they made of them! It was great to spend time together and help our buddies get creative.

We also delivered ‘top secret’ diaries from an elf and spent time reading these together. We couldn’t believe how bust elves really are at this time of year!

P7 would also love to thank Primary 1 for a wonderful afternoon on Wednesday! We loved joining you for your topic afternoon and learned lots about Fairyland! You all did a great job making clocks, wands and building a carriage for Cinderella. Thank you for inviting us!

Parent Council meeting

Our Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputy Head girl went to a Parent Council meeting on Monday 7th December. We spoke about what children are learning about in our classes, what children are enjoying learning about and why, what children would like to do more of in class and how can the Parent Council help with learning. We got lots of different responses from all pupils involved. Most pupils did not realise that we have a Parent Council so we would like to inform the pupils that we have one and think about how they can help us. Some classes in the upper school would like to do more ICT, maths games and P.E and in the lower school they would like to do more P.E, reading, writing and more topics in their subjects. We created and showed a video at the meeting saying what the children think and this was really enjoyed by all at the Parent Council.

A Christmas Star!

P7a really enjoyed their trip to the cinema today. Here are some of our thoughts…

“My favourite part was when they were on TV confronting the man” – Amy

“I liked how she could do miracles” – Yasmin

“I liked that it was about friendship and that they did not give up on each other” – Laura

“I liked that at the end we got to see the bloopers!” – Adam

“I liked that she was born in the barn and her name was Noelle.” – Leya

“I liked that she did not stop trying to persuade her dad that Mr McKerrod was trying to destroy the factory.” – Nieve

“I liked the snow globes as they were very festive” – Anna

P7 Achievement certificates

We have been celebrating achievement in P7a! Well done to the following children who were awarded achievement certificates on Friday.

Kathleen Beck – for adding detail and description to her writing entitled ‘Wing.’

Craig Livie – for always giving 100% and continuously challenging himself.

Neda Peneva – for consistently working hard and trying her very best.

Muaawiya Tanweer – for working very hard and trying his best especially in maths.

Tilly Martin – for being a kind and caring friend and always supporting others.

#PrayforParis

After the events in Paris last weekend P7 pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss anything they knew or had heard/read in the news around this. P7 watched a video clip on BBC Newsround about how countries all over the world have showed support to the people of Paris by lighting up iconic buildings in the colours of the French flag – blue, white and red. Pupils discussed the impact on both the people of Paris and the world. Primary 7 dealt with this in a very open and mature way and were encouraged to ask questions they may have.

Science experiments in P7!

P7 had a very exciting afternoon with some S6 students from James Young High School (JYHS) today. We were lucky enough to spend the afternoon being scientists! The S6 students shared their knowledge of the scientific method and helped us to write up an aim, hypothesis, method and conclusion for our experiment. The focus was the impact exercise has on the heart rate. We took our resting pulse and compared this to our pulse after completing different exercises. We are really looking forward to them coming back next week to do some more, possibly messy, experiments!
