The “Value of the Month” for February was “Love” and Primary 1a and Primary 6a led us in our learning about this value with their class assemblies. Their drama sketches, songs and stories all helped us to reflect on this value together. Thank you to all who participated in these assemblies. The “Value of the Month” for March is “Fairness”.

P4 does Comic Relief!
This year Primary 4 are responsible for planning and organising Red Nose Day as part of an enterprise topic. The big day is Friday 13th March so preparations are in full swing! We have split into teams with different responsibilities such as fund-raising, advertising and filming groups. As we work on this project we are developing skills in many areas such as teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, ICT and money management. Red noses are on sale for £1 – we will come around classes every morning to sell these. (We will also be selling loom band bracelets and funny faces next week – details to follow). The theme is “Make Your Face Funny for Money” so we invite you to come to school with a “funny” face on Friday 13th March and please bring a donation for this if you can. We are also holding a talent show during our assembly next week – each year group is invited to enter one “funny” act – so start rehearsing now!
P4 Cluster Service – World Book Day
Primary 4 visited the Lanthorn Centre recently to take part in the P4 Cluster Service for World Book Day. Other schools taking part included Bankton, Dedridge and St Ninian’s and the service was led by Reverend Robin and the Chaplaincy Team. We showed our “I Love Reading” video and sang a lovely song. Some of us also took part in a presentation about the history of books. We really enjoyed sharing this special service with friends from other schools. Thanks to the Chaplaincy Team for organising!
Film Club
Film Club is back! The new group met for the first time this week and we got to know each other better by sharing the types of films we like to watch and our favourite film. We all have different tastes! The first film we are watching this term is The Borrowers and we will be writing reviews soon so we will let you know our thoughts!
P4 Trout Release
Primary 4 bid a fond farewell to their Brown Trout friends! We had successfully reared them from eggs to fry over the last few weeks and they were ready to swim free in the big, wide world. The trout fry were released into the Murieston Water, near the Co-op. We also had the opportunity to observe the river life and we found many interesting little bugs that will provide food for our trout. This project was supported by Forth Fisheries, Murieston Environmental Group and Dedridge Environment Ecology Project – many thanks to all involved!
Food technology is Fun in Primary 4
In Primary 4 we have been developing our food technology skills over the last few weeks. First we developed skills in measuring and mixing to make shortbread for the Burns party. It was delicious! Then we learned how to prepare a cheese (with optional tomato!) sandwich. This helped us to practise our spreading, cutting and grating skills. Yummy! We have also been learning how to keep safe and hygienic when preparing food and also about healthy eating. What a lot of foodie fun!
National Fair Trade Schools Conference
Williamston Primary School was represented at the National Fair Trade Schools Conference by some of our International Group reps and our Head Boy and Head Girl. The conference took place on Monday 23rd February in the Glasgow City Chambers. Speakers included Martin Rhodes, the Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Humza Yasouf MSP, the Minister for International Development and External Affairs, and Andy Ashcroft from the Kool Skools company. The star guest was Pamela L’Intelligent, a machinist from the Craft Aid company who had travelled all the way from Mauritius. She gave a first-hand account of the impact Fair Trade has had on her, her family and her community. Children participated in a Fair Trade song and quiz and the school was gifted a Fair Trade football. It was a very interesting and informative morning!
Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade Fortnight has begun! The International Group held a special Fairtrade assembly last Friday to get everyone in the Fairtrade mood. The theme this year is to look at how Fairtrade helps farmers and their families and the focus is on Fairtrade tea, sugar and cocoa. There are two main competitions: design a Fairtrade mascot and design a Fairtrade birthday card or cake (as Fairtrade Fortnight is celebrating 20 years this year) – see your teacher or International Group Rep. for more details. Each class will also design a Fairtrade patch for our quilt picture. And don’t forget about Fairtrade Fridays when you are encouraged to bring in a Fairtrade snack – the winning class each week will get a certificate. Enjoy the Fairtrade fun!
Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade Fortnight is coming up soon! The International Group is working hard planning their assembly, which will be on Friday 20th February, and organising activities and competitions for the whole school. More details to follow soon…..
P4 and The Big 5
We have been learning about Scotland’s Big 5 native animals: the Harbour Seal, the Golden Eagle, the Red Squirrel, the Red Deer and the Otter. We worked in groups to research the animals and to make big pictures of them using collage.
