Rannoch News

This week in Rannoch we have enjoyed some lovely early Spring sunshine outside with our friends.

We have also been working really hard in class and have progressed well with our understanding of the initial sound ‘o’ and related words. We have also begun our learning journey in relation to the concept of ‘time’ and have been learning to recognise our morning routines.

In our Topic studies we have learned about sea creatures and enjoyed painting some fish and practising our fine motor skills in cutting and sticking jellyfish pictures.

All in all, a lovely week.

Tay Class Update

Prior to the February holiday Tay Class made bird feeders using apple slices. peanut butter and bird seed.  They’re super quick and easy to make – why don’t you have a try?  We hung ours around the Trim Trail so we could observe them and see how quickly the birds eat them.

As a treat and to end our ‘Hot and Cold’ science topic we had some ice cream cones.  They were delicious!  We chose from either vanilla, strawberry or chocolate.  We are planning to do a pictogram to show our favourite flavours across the class, however some of the class were absent which means we will need to have more ice-cream another day.  Will our choices will be the same next time?

It was great to have everyone back in class last week after the break.  We quickly settled back into our routines.

We met some friends and adults from other classes in our Sensory Committee, out at the Trim Trail.  There were balloons, ice, paint blocks, brushes, spray bottles with watery paint and paper.  Many of us enjoyed exploring these resources.

There was a huge cardboard box in the outdoor classroom.  One of our favourite activities ‘What’s in the box?’ changed to ‘who’s in the box?’ Everyone had a turn in the box.  Some of us had lots of turns.  It was great fun!-  We did so well to take turns and share (a very small) space.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY in Primary 4!

A Complete Guide to British Currency

M O N E Y

Money is one of the concepts we have been learning in Maths.  This week, we focused on recognising coins and notes, sorting money, counting and adding amounts and discussing the importance of money and  how it affects our lives.  We also showed amounts of money using different combinations of coins and we all practised writing amounts of money on the whiteboard.

Next week, we will use iPads and the Smartboard to play different money games and focus on adding pounds and pence to find a total.

Bonnie – Money is really important because it helps you buy things that you want.

Karlie – We all need money to buy things that we need and things that we want.

Peter – I liked writing the pound sign.

Cody – I filled the whole whiteboard by writing lots of money amounts.  You shouldn’t write ‘p’ (for pence) if you are writing an amount like £10.50, you only need the pound sign.

Jacob – I could make lots of ways to make £2.75.

Jordyn – I enjoyed sorting the coins and I did it quickly.

Rocco – You can make an amount using different coins.

Alexander – I liked adding the (total) cost of things.

Welcome Back Ness Class

It was great for everyone to be back in Ness Class this week. We all had great breaks: some of us had a birthday, some of us went to London, some went to Oban, some had day trips but we all enjoyed a good rest. This was why we were ready to get back to learning and having fun in class this week. Our new Topic is Under the Ocean and in Science we are learning about Hot and Cold. In number, we are looking at division and fractions and in literacy our big focus is learning how to write to persuade! Routines were re-established very quickly and we are already excited about the remainder of this term. Enjoy some of the highlights of our week below!

P2 News

We have thoroughly enjoyed our first week back after the holidays – it has been lovely to see our friends again.

We have had a very busy week….In Read, Write, Inc. we have worked hard on developing our Phonic skills and our reading.

In Maths we have also worked hard on learning about Fractions of amounts. We have been learning about whole parts, halves, quarters and three-quarters.

We have also learned about the symbols of the Holy Spirit as well as its meaning.

We also worked as table teams to design and draw a 7 foot long ‘tapestry of life at St Mary’s’ with illustrations of our memories, and experiences at school.

A great week!

This week we have enjoyed time with our friends during Committee Time…we wrapped up warm and enjoyed fun times on the Trim Trail.

In Literacy we have focused on the initial sound ‘g’ and have begun to look a telling the time to the hour in our ‘Beyond Number’ studies.

We have also started a new topic and are looking at the wonderful word ‘Under the Sea’.

We had a lovely break but have thoroughly enjoyed our first week back with our friends.

Primary 1

This week in Primary 1 we had a theme of love ❤️ and kindness. We learned all about St Valentine and how we can show love and kindness to others. We made tie die love hearts to display in class to remind us how to show love and kindness.

In outdoor learning this week, due to the very wet weather, we spent it in the outdoor classroom. We were tasked by building a structure, some of us built bridges and some built towers or castles and house.

We read a lovely story about mermaids and created a land for her to live in, we all enjoy playing in the sand.

Have a lovely weekend.

Half Term Update- Ness Class

A fabulous end to a busy term in Ness Class. We have really enjoyed our learning with many highlights to share. Our focus on Scotland and Burns led to many exciting learning opportunities and amazing Food Technology sessions. In Numeracy we have been very successful developing our strategies for multiplying- we really like grouping our numbers to help us count on! This will be a good strategy to help in our next learning block which will focus on Division and Fractions. We have also been using our clocks to tell the time. In Literacy, we are reading every day. Mrs Mains and Mrs Hill are really pushing our Reading Skills through Read, Write, Inc. We have also been focusing on Poetry and writing a Biography  about Rabbie Burns. In Health and Wellbeing, we are developing our core strength during Class Yoga, and Mrs McMaster has been putting us through our paces within team games and racquet skills. Each week provides us with different learning opportunities where our pupils lead the learning by planning mini-topics using our Floor book. Enjoy a sample of our learning in pictures below.

Numeracy Mini-Champions

Well done to our Numeracy Mini Champions who met on Teams with Mini Champions from schools across West Lothian. We were able to chat to each school and learn about what other schools do to improve Maths learning in their schools. We also shared the things we do in our school to make Maths fun and easier for all. Here are some of the things we shared:

Well done to Keira (P6R), Hope (P5) and Katie (P5) who represented our school very well. Keep your eyes peeled for our next initiative.

The Numeracy Mini Champions

Primary 1

On Monday Primary 1 performed our Scottish song and poem that we have been practicing in front of the whole school as part of the school Scottish Poetry competition. We did very well and everyone should be proud of themselves.

We then enjoyed a lovely buddy time with our Primary 7 buddies where we read to our buddies and they also read to us.

At outdoor learning we planted pumpkin 🎃 seeds. We collected the seeds from inside the pumpkin 🎃 at Halloween, but they had to stay in a dark place for a long time before we could plant them. We are hoping they grow into big pumpkins.

On Friday we joined the whole school mass, we did very well. In RE this week we talk about being part of Gods family, our school family as well as our family at home.

We hope you all have a lovely holiday.
