P3 Blog

Here are some of P3’s highlights of the week:

“We were learning how to play hockey in gym. We learned how to push pass and dribble.”

“We had to stand at the green line and push the ball with our feet on the ground.” Cadence

“In science we learned about Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen. He invented the x-ray machine during the Victorian era by mistake. If you are a scientist and you make a mistake, it can be a happy mistake because you can learn something new. It’s the same for our learning in P3!” Eve

“We learned about the skeleton. We had to cut out the bones and stick them together to make a big skeleton.” Olivia P

“We have been learning our times tables in maths. We need to be confident and count up in fives.” Aiden N

“In Maths Talk we have been learning to build a bridge to another friendly number to help us add.” Connor L

P3 Class Trip

Yesterday P3 took a trip to New Lanark to learn about the Victorians. We got to try on Victorian style clothing and explore a Victorian classroom, home and shop. We also took a ride on the Annie McLeod experience to learn more about life as a Victorian child and the village of New Lanark.

P3 were enthusiastic, respectful and very well behaved throughout the trip – Mrs Cullum was very proud of them all! Thank you to Ms Ross, Ms Matthews and Ms Swavlowska for helping us out.

P3 Blog

This week we started our topic – we are learning about the Victorians. Here are some of our highlights from this week:

Aiesha says, “We learned about the different jobs that Victorian kids did.”

Cadence says, “I enjoyed when we watched the videos of the Victorians.”

Aiden C says, “We learned that photos were in black and white in Victorian times.”

Connor L says, “I enjoyed doing our spelling test today.”

Millie says, “I liked doing catching and throwing in PE.”

P6 Community Proposal Models

This term, Primary 6 have been investigating the local area. We carried out research and collected evidence to identify what the strengths and areas for development were for Pumpherston and Uphall Station. Using this as inspiration, we came up with proposals for things that could be added to or changed in the local community. We wrote letters to West Lothian Council to persuade them to introduce our ideas and made 3D models of our proposals.

Suggestions included: car parks, cycle paths, shops, a community centre, a skate park, a swimming pool and extra maintenance for existing buildings in the community.

Here are some of our 3D models:

This week we have been making the most of the good weather by taking our learning outdoors. We practised giving and following directions in French by playing games outside and made links to maths by using compass points.

We also had lots of fun speaking to our visitors for DYW week. We got to meet a nurse, a head chef, a brick layer, a motorbike builder, a marketing student, a music instructor and an Autism support worker.

P6 Blog

This week’s learning update comes from Lauren:

We have been working on our map skills for our rivers topic. We learned about contour lines and how to use them. We also learned how to use scale and made scale maps of our classroom for an Easter egg hunt.

In Golden Time today, some of us made a barn out of connecting shapes. We think it’s cool because we could tip it over without breaking it but it’s very warm! We could fit four people at a squash or two comfortably. What do you think?

P6 River Models

P6 have been learning about rivers this term and this week we have been getting creative! First, we used clay to make 3D models showing the course of a river from source to mouth. We included features like valleys, tributaries, meanders, floodplains, levees, estuaries and deltas. Then we used a variety of instruments to make a sound story to depict a river’s course from source to mouth. Take a look at our models in the pictures below and see if you can identify some of the features of a river.

Our Local Area

Pumpherston used to be a mining village and is on the edge of Livingston. We found this out when we were learning about our local area.  We wrote reports and organised our information using subheadings.

We looked at Google Maps to find the school, the shops, takeaways, parks and train stations, then we created our own maps. Most of the class found it quite tricky because some places didn’t show on the map, this was because our map was missing lots of information.img_0592

Now we are looking at co-ordinates and directional instructions.  We learnt that a quarter turn was 90 degrees and a full turn was 360 degrees.  We played the game Turtle Pond and Battleships to help us.

Investigating Viking Artefacts

Primary 4 have been learning about the Vikings.  We were very lucky this week to be able to investigate some real and replica Viking artefacts.  Sarah-Jane organised for the class to borrow some artefacts from the charity Archaeology Scotland.  The children really enjoyed looking at and touching the artefacts  They thought about what they might be used for, how they would be made, what they were made of and how they were found.

Sarah-Jane told us about  being an archaeologist and showed the class some pictures of digs she had been on.

p1020176

Primary 4 became history detectives – building stories about the people looking at the evidence.

p1020178 p1020179 p1020180 p1020181

The children then did some observational drawing, looking at the artefacts and trying to draw exactly what they could see, thinking about line, pattern and shading to show the different textures and colours of the artefacts.

Thank you to Sarah-Jane for organising this brilliant experience.

Primary 4 working together

Primary 4 have been working very hard in groups and today we demonstrated how much we can get done when we work as a group.  The children had limited time to complete their posters and they had to work together and focus on the task if they wanted to complete it.

Unfortunately there were a few people absent today but all the children have been involved in this task.  They have done some fabulous research and have displayed their information in the form of posters.  Well done P4.
