As part of our Fairtrade and Rights Respecting School focus week, P6 learnt about the difference between wants and needs and how they link to our rights. We looked at a day in the life of a typical Ugandan Primary School child (Magale is in Uganda) and thought about their wants and needs. We were able to see that although their wants would be very different, we all have the same needs. We then looked at a Fairtrade case study to see how Fairtrade can help families get what they need and how we can make a difference.

Hallie, Katie and Oskar are looking forward to sharing what we have learnt with the rest of the school in our assembly tomorrow. We think you might be surprised at how different a typical Ugandan school child’s day is to your own!

Anti bullying week – Primary 6

Primary 6 have been thinking about how our emotions and actions can have an impact on our friends and the people around us.  This can be positive and helpful, or negative and sometimes even hurtful.

We thought about times when we free others to be themselves.

Here are some of the fantastic examples:

‘I free people when I tell them to be themselves and be happy.  I free people when I ask them to play with me and smile.  I free people when I tell them ‘Whatever they call you, nasty things, it isn’t true.’ ‘ – Sophie Martin.

‘I free people when I can respect how they are and understand how they are.  I free people when I see they are trying hard to be themselves.  I free people when they stop doing (things) to me and I can understand how or why they’re doing it.’- Sophie Campbell.

Anti-bullying week

In Primary 5 today we watched the Newsround special debate on bullying.  The big question was; is it better to PUNISH a bully or HELP them? A vote was held on the Newsround website and 47% said PUNISH, 53% said HELP.

Our vote was 50% PUNISH and 50 % HELP.  We then thought about what we do here in school already, and whether each thing was a punishment or a help.  Here are some of the comments from our discussion:

‘If you punish the bully, doesn’t that turn you into a sort of bully too?’

‘The bully gets to talk to the teacher, and they help the bully to understand their behaviour, and understand that we’re all like a big family here.’

‘They need to know there are consequences to what they do.’

‘We need to tell them to stop and give them a signal that what they are doing is wrong, and help them to understand that.’

‘We can set them a good example, that would be a help.’

‘When they get to write a letter of apology it helps the person who has been hurt too.’

Nursery news

The children in Nursery have been learning about our school rules, and telling each other how we make our school the best it can be. Have a look at their great ideas!

Primary 1/2

We have been learning about chicks this week. We were drawing chicks today; we drew yellow dots and then we put on legs, eyes, beak and made every chick a little bit different.  In our groups we made big pictures to show what we know about the life cycle of a chicken, and what they need to grow big and strong.

We were learning about caring people as part of Rights Respecting schools. We know children have the right to live with their parents or someone who cares for them.

Red Nose day Total

comic_relief_logoMrs Thom and her team have been counting.  They have done all their sums and have a final answer.

Our Red Nose Day activities raised £211.61!!

 

That’s fantastic, thank you to everyone who joined in and gave money, time and talents to help raise this much. The UK government has promised to double all money raised by schools for this year’s Red Nose Day campaign, so our efforts will be worth £423.22!!

Money raised by schools this year will be used by Comic relief to help get 300,000 children in Africa into education and learning.

I can, you can, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Showing our school values to the world

At Assembly this week we were delighted to hear about the fundraising Cerys and Nia had done for our partner school in Magale. The girls worked with their family and organised a coffee morning at their grandma’s house last weekend.  They served tea and coffee, held a raffle, sold home baking and made loom bands for sale.  The total raised was over £400! Wow!  We added on the money already raised here in school last term and presented the cheque to Mrs Comrie after assembly.

We were also treated to a slideshow presented by Molly, about her exciting trip to Malawi this summer with the charity Mary’s Meals.  This charity encourages children to go to school by making sure there is a meal for them to eat there during the day.  Molly took donations of toys and gifts, and met lots of new friends in Malawi.  She also got the chance to try the meal, called Pala, with the children, and she said it tasted a bit like porridge- but even worse!

Closer to home, we heard how Freya was a good and kind friend to Lauren when Lauren fell off her bike on her way back from school. Well done Freya.  We’re glad to see your leg is feeling better now Lauren.

These girls are great examples of our school values, showing respect and consideration for other people.

P6 weekly blog

This week we took part in the Rights Respecting Schools whole school assembly. The right we had been learning about was ‘ we all have the right be the best you can be and be proud of ourselves’. We showed what we had been learning through a drama, a powerpoint and posters.

Primary 4

 

This week we have been learning about Children’s Rights and that every child in the world has the right to an education.  We  watched a clip of  children in Africa and discussed how different their school was to our school.  We made posters to show some of  the values of  education.  Then we shared what we had learned with the whole school at our Rights Respecting assembly.

p7 enjoyed learning about the rights of children this week and all the activities we took part in .The best part of our week was once again poetry writing!!! We wrote poems about an “ideal world” and some of them were read out at our assembly. All the staff were very impressed with them!!
