Primary 6 Update

This week we completed various activities relating to Remembrance Day.

The whole school took part in a one minute silence, which provided an opportunity to reflect and remember all those who fought for our country. To remember the soldiers who have died in the wars both past and present.

We were set a challenge to create a piece of artwork that would convey a message about this important day in history. We used pupil choice to select one of the following options, which focused on using a range of different art techniques:

  • Pointillism Poppies
  • Stained Glass Window Soldiers
  • Flanders Field

P3 Class Trip

Yesterday P3 took a trip to New Lanark to learn about the Victorians. We got to try on Victorian style clothing and explore a Victorian classroom, home and shop. We also took a ride on the Annie McLeod experience to learn more about life as a Victorian child and the village of New Lanark.

P3 were enthusiastic, respectful and very well behaved throughout the trip – Mrs Cullum was very proud of them all! Thank you to Ms Ross, Ms Matthews and Ms Swavlowska for helping us out.

Investigating Viking Artefacts

Primary 4 have been learning about the Vikings.  We were very lucky this week to be able to investigate some real and replica Viking artefacts.  Sarah-Jane organised for the class to borrow some artefacts from the charity Archaeology Scotland.  The children really enjoyed looking at and touching the artefacts  They thought about what they might be used for, how they would be made, what they were made of and how they were found.

Sarah-Jane told us about  being an archaeologist and showed the class some pictures of digs she had been on.

Primary 4 became history detectives – building stories about the people looking at the evidence.

The children then did some observational drawing, looking at the artefacts and trying to draw exactly what they could see, thinking about line, pattern and shading to show the different textures and colours of the artefacts.

Thank you to Sarah-Jane for organising this brilliant experience.

Assembly

The stars of today’s assembly were Primary 5 who took us back to the days of Mary Queen of Scots and told us all about her life. We learned about her husbands, her travelling and her hopes that her cousin Elizabeth would help her.

The cast coped really well with the glitches in technology, and with the weather trying to take part!

Well done Primary 5.

What was your favourite part of the assembly?

Primary 7 Assembly

Here are the stars of yesterday’s assembly- Primary 7.  They shared what they had learned about World War 2 and told the story of two children who were evacuated to safety.  Thank you for helping us to mark the season of remembrance Primary 7. The picture shows the cast at the end of the show.

Primary 4

This week, Primary 4 made links between our Roman topic and RME!

We found out that Romans had many different gods and often prayed to them for different things. We decided to investigate the main gods and find out more about them. We worked in pairs to create a fact file about each god.

Here is our display below…

We will be starting our fantastic building project next week.. Check in with us to see how we are getting on!

Until then…

Thursday/Jeudi

Part of the school 1+2 language development project

Today was very busy but also very exciting. We had lessons in the University again, learning some new songs, poems and tongue twisters in French. Jacques was asked if he would teach the class his favourite song, Frère Jacques which he was brave enough to do.

After class we met Mrs Hull’s friend, Mme Decourt. She and Mrs Hull have written to each other as pen friends since they were at school! We went for lunch, then we were invited to visit Roussillon, meet Mme Decourt’s family, and even to go to visit the primary school – L’école St Jacques! The children sang a super welcome song in English for us and we listened to them reading a lovely story about a magic cat in Egypt. The castle in Roussillon is special because it was there that the French king signed a law in 1564 to make  1 janvier the start of the year in France. We have a copy of the law (merci Mme Decourt!) to show you when we get back to school.

We made lots of new friends today. We are hoping our schools will be able to write to each other so we can learn about France and we can tell the children about Scotland.

Passover in Primary 5

We had a Seder meal today – we had kind of the same food the Jewish people would eat. It was very tasty. We tasted parsley and bitter herbs (horse radish) , matzo bread, salt water and charoset (mixed chopped apples and cinnamon).  We drank juice instead of wine. The Seder meal is eaten at Passover to celebrate Jewish freedom from slavery.

Before the meal 2 volunteers searched for any ordinary bread hidden in our room, sweeping with a feather.
