Primary 7

Primary 7’s final days at primary school are drawing near.  In HWB we have been discussing strategies we could use to cope with the changes and new situations high school will bring.  We decided that making friends is a good way to cope.  We created recipes to show what a good friend is.

Our topic in maths is Algebra and everyone seems to be enjoying it!  Most of us can now use both the covering method and balancing method to solve an equation.  Blueberries can also use the function machine method and create their own equation from a word problem.  Anna and Elli designed a magic trick to link to their equation.  We are hoping to film it and put it onto the blog!

Please have a look at our sculptures.  We have been working hard in Art to make an armature from modelling wire.  This creates the structure of our figure.   We then added newspaper to show the form of the body.

A chick is born

Primary 1/2 and Primary 1 are now the proud parents of  10 healthy chicks.  We have 4 boys and 6 girls.  To see one of our chicks hatching, click on the video link ‘A chick is born’. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  Keep checking in to see what is happening with our ‘Babies’.

JRSO Parksmart poster winners

At today’s Assembly we heard who had won the Poster competition organised by the JRSOs. Here are the winning designs which will be adapted into posters for display around our school, to encourage everyone to park smart or to travel to school without the car.

Well done to Sophie, Bayleigh, Kyle, Bailey, Molly, Nia, Freya, and Jonathan.

P6 Weekly Blog

This week we picked our Junior Road Safety Officers. They are Eilidh Anderson and Ellie Brown.  We have also picked new Eco reps. They are Hollie Brown and James Halliday. We are enjoying our visits to the nursery to meet our nursery buddies and we have been busy writing our buddies a letter to tell them all about us. We are still working on our magazine about our local areas. We are developing our ICT skills to make sure we can lay out the page properly.

It was a blast!

Our assembly last week was such a blast – literally as a volcano erupted halfway through our performance. Luckily it was part of the plan so we were able to carry on with a song and a dance. It was lovely to see lots of people who care about us visiting school to see us perform – thanks for coming. We are still learning about natural disasters and will keep you up to date with our learning.

We have been reading and writing poetry as part of our reading focus. Some of us have been surprised at how much we enjoy writing poems and Miss Anderson has been pleasantly surprised at how emotive our poems are. Let us know if you want to read some and we will type them up for next week.

We’ll update more later in the week.

P1 & P1/2 Turn Masterchef

This week, Primary 1 and Primary 1/2 have turned into little chefs! We had a very busy afternoon on Monday – making soup, butter and bread!

We used cutting and chopping skills to help make four different soups from ingredients we had chosen ourselves – Leek & Potato, Lentil & Vegetable, Tomato & Sweet Potato and Borsch. We also made four different flavours of bread – Plain, Rosemary, Cheese & Chive and Seeded. We used our data handling skills to find the most popular choices for each, which were Tomato & Sweet Potato soup and Plain soda bread. We plan to make them again to let other people try!

We have also started preparing for our assembly, which will take place on Thursday 12th June at 1.15pm. Put it in your diaries :)!

Until next time..

Primary 4

This week Primary 4 learnt how to find the area of a shape within Maths. We talked about when we might use this skill in later life and came up with examples such as buying and fitting a carpet or working out whether you have enough space for a new piece of furniture. Can you work out the area of the shapes below by counting the squares or multiplying the length by the breadth?

P3 Trip to Kirk of Calder

P3 went on a trip and enjoyed it. We went to Kirk of Calder church in Mid Calder and we learned lots of things. We learned that the font is made from Gibraltar rock.  The trip was brilliant because we got to go downstairs, upstairs and stand in the pulpit, and then they were kind enough to give us a snack. We have written thank you letters to Bobby and Richard for being so friendly and helpful.
