Primary 4

For our current block of Science, we have been looking at Space – particularly the Sun, Moon and Earth.

So far, we have learned how the Earth spins on its own and also orbits the Sun. We are able to explain how this affects daytime and night-time, and will learn about seasons this week!

We found a fantastic website which told us lots of interesting facts about ‘The Earth and Beyond’. There was a very clever way to remember the names of planets in the Solar System and how far away they are from the Sun. See if you can work out the order from the mnemonic below…

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets

(The first one is Mercury)

Here is the website below if you’d like to learn more (The Children’s University of Manchester).

Until next time (and may the force be with you)

P5 Weekly Blog

Last week we had a trip to the swimming pool at Broxburn to do our swimming assessments. We no longer get a block of swimming it is only one visit. We will keep you posted as to what will happen next.

Last week we were looking at landscape paintings and Shannon very kindly brought in a couple of paintings for us to look at. We were learning the correct vocabulary to use when discussing landscape paintings. Our next steps are to practise mixing paints and using different types of brush stokes and then we will use these skills to paint a landscape of Sierra Leone.

We were also looking at the effects of severe weather and we discussed the different types of severe weather we can get in Scotland and Sierra Leone.

We are getting trained up to be excellent scientists! Last week we were learning all about the digestive system. In a few years our NHS will be looking good once our trained scientists get out there to help!

Primary 3

Primary 3 have been learning how to use an Atlas this week.  The work we have completed on coordinates in Maths has really helped us with this! We located the islands we are learning about in our topic, Madagascar and the Isle of Coll. We then challenged one another to find different countries by checking the index to find the page of the country and it’s coordinates.   We have also been researching the different landscapes found in Madagascar and have discovered that it has mountains, tropical beaches, cities and rainforests.

Primary 6 Meetings

This week and last we have had a Class Meeting. This is an opportunity for everyone in the class to get together and discuss issues that have been raised throughout the week. We discussed different ways to make sure that we stay on track, in terms of behaviour and work. As a class we decided to start Behaviour Buddies. Everyone will have a Behaviour Buddy and everyone will be a Behaviour Buddy. On Thursday we plan to take part in a few trust building exercises.

In Maths the Red group have been working with 3 and 4 times tables. We have been using concrete materials to help but are becoming much more able to remember out times tables facts. The Blue and Green group have been learning about Prime Numbers and Factors. So far we are all able to identify factors and we know how to explain if a number is Prime. We are nearly ready to move on to our next topic so watch this space.

We have started our Rivers topic. Each of our activity groups has chosen a river to research in preparation for our assembly (19th Feb – save the date!). We have already rewritten famous songs and have started planning and writing our Dramas. We don’t expect to need too many costumes for our assembly but will let you know if this changes.

We are really enjoying Art and are demonstrating excellent skills with paint and pencil. We will be moving onto printing next.

That’s all for now – we hope to give another update later on this week.

Miss Anderson and P6

PS Because it is our Assembly fortnight and we have  a few days off, the homework handed out tomorrow will be for the following Friday (20th Feb). This will allow all children to enjoy their time off and have a bit of spare time to learn words for our assembly.

Primary 4

This week, Primary 4 finished their mini-topic on climate zones. We made models of each zone in groups, as well as the plants/animals that lived there. We also made travel videos, explaining what the temperature, rainfall and land were like. Hopefully Miss McLaughlin will work out how to upload them!

For now, here are photos of each of the climate zones we studied.

P5 Weekly Blog

For our Scottish topic P5 were learning about Charles Rennie MacIntosh. He was born in Glasgow in  1868 and he died in 1928. He was only 60 years old. He is famous for his art work and his style of art work was given the title of ‘Art Nouveau’. Attached are some of our pictures done in this style.

Primary 4

Primary Four finished up their Scots’ writing focus this week by writing more difficult descriptions about a partner. Not only did we have to describe how they look, but we had to give clues about their personality too!

See if you can guess who is being described this time..

Primary Seven

Writing

This week we have been finishing of our own comic strips. We had to peer assess them to ensure that they included captions, relevant pictures, speech and thought bubbles.

Reading

We are very close to the end of our class novel ‘Varjak Paw’. Everyone wrote a prediction for the ending of the book. Some of us have been very close so far!

Maths

In maths, we were all really interested to learn more about how time zones work. We used maps to help us estimate the times across the world. We worked out which countries celebrate New Year before and after us in the UK.

Lots of us moved up a CLIC level today.

HWB

We had a big focus on respect this week. Jammin’ Andy came in to teach us new dances and we now have a special ‘kindness cup’ in the class where we can leave kind messages for our classmates.
