Primary 4

Primary 4 have been gearing up for their upcoming Benchball tournament on Monday 30th!

We have been exploring different ways of passing, how to make good use of space and how to work well as a team. We have been practising in mini-games in class groups, but are looking forward to playing against our cluster friends next week!

A big thank you to Ms Pender who has been teaching us Benchball in our gym sessions, and to Miss Heatherill for organising the trip, and trusting that Miss McLaughlin is teaching it properly!

A reminder to parents/carers that Benchball letters and EE2 forms are due in by  Thursday 26th March. The cost is £3.50. Please see the office or Miss McLaughlin if you are missing the permission form!

Primary 6 Safely Observe the Solar Eclipse

This morning Primary 6 enjoyed taking part in celebrating the solar eclipse. Because it wasn’t safe to look at the sun we decided to make a sound recording. When we listened back it was definitely quieter, with fewer birds chirping. We also set up a stop motion recording to see how the light changed from start to end of the eclipse. We hope to upload this video soon.

We spent quite a bit of time learning more about solar eclipses. We worked with a partner to create a poster or leaflet with more information. These are on display on our classroom window so please take a look next time you are passing by.

Next  week we are going to start learning about staying safe and we will complete the Keeping Myself Safe programme. The following week we are going to learn more about babies and growing up.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Primary 2

The children had a fabulous Red Nose Day on Friday and enjoyed the activities.  Miss Miller tested the children on spelling their common words and Miss Brennan and Miss Vermeulen worked together to teach the children how to make Red Nose Day bookmarks.

This week the children have been keen to spell out their common words so that they can improve on their previous score to move their arrow on our class target board.  In Maths they have been working on doubles and have played domino and playing card games to help them to remember their doubles facts.  They have also been exploring the similarities and differences between adult and baby animals and talked about how we can tell which family a baby animal is from.  Some of the baby animals were quite tricky to identify but children made links to books they had looked at in our class library and used this to identify the adult animal. The children were also very keen to talk about who they thought they looked most like in their family and why.  In Literacy this week the children wrote acrostic poems about Spring.  They discussed what an acrostic poem is and gave lots of ideas for words associated with Spring for use in their poems. DSCN1626

Red Nose day Total

comic_relief_logoMrs Thom and her team have been counting.  They have done all their sums and have a final answer.

Our Red Nose Day activities raised £211.61!!

That’s fantastic, thank you to everyone who joined in and gave money, time and talents to help raise this much. The UK government has promised to double all money raised by schools for this year’s Red Nose Day campaign, so our efforts will be worth £423.22!!

Money raised by schools this year will be used by Comic relief to help get 300,000 children in Africa into education and learning.

I can, you can, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

The Big Pedal

The Big pedal is almost over! This is the last week. We had a quick photo opportunity on Tuesday with the cyclists and scooter people – and the JRSOs too, of course.

The JRSOs were so impressed with our safe cyclist today that she was awarded 10 house-points for wearing her helmet.  She must have been paying attention to P2’s assembly.

Passover in Primary 5

We had a Seder meal today – we had kind of the same food the Jewish people would eat. It was very tasty. We tasted parsley and bitter herbs (horse radish) , matzo bread, salt water and charoset (mixed chopped apples and cinnamon).  We drank juice instead of wine. The Seder meal is eaten at Passover to celebrate Jewish freedom from slavery.

Before the meal 2 volunteers searched for any ordinary bread hidden in our room, sweeping with a feather.

Primary 3 Chefs

Primary 3 have been learning how to prepare healthy food, and trying new tastes in class.  Last week’s team made a delicious cous cous salad with a range of vegetables. This week the team of chefs made a refreshing fruit salad.  Any ideas of other simple recipes we can try, which will help us learn how to chop, cut, peel and grate?

Pumpherston Shale Oil

Primary 7 have been learning about fossil fuels. We researched Pumpherston Shale Industry to see what it was like back in the day. It opened in 1882 and closed 1926, it was not open very long. Now Pumpherston Golf Course is built on top and beside shale.

P5 Weekly Blog

This term we have been comparing Scotland to Sierra Leone in Africa.  This topic has been linking to lots of our other curricular areas. In science we have been learning about ebola, the symptoms of ebola and how you catch it. It also links to ICT because we have been using the netbooks to carry out our research. It links to literacy because we have been reading,  taking notes and making poster. In art we have been painting a landscape picture of Sierra Leone. It also links to maths because we compared the weather and displayed this information as  tally charts and frequency tables. Our drama this term has an African theme and also in PE we are making up our own African dances. We have also learned how to work well in groups as we have completed a lot of these tasks through group work.001 002 003 004 005 006

We had a FABULOUS  Red Nose Day on Friday! We had a new well-behaved pupil added to our class and FOUR new teachers!

We had games and Maths with Mr Evans before break and then Drama with Mr Mairs after. You can tell from the photo that he really got into character! We then had Red Nose drawing fun with Miss McPhail and more Drama with Miss Toall.

Miss McLaughlin really enjoyed her day off! Now she has a bank of teachers who can take over from her when she needs them 😉
