Rotary Quiz Winners!!!!

Four of our amazing P7s – Donatella, Olivia, Rory and Kaden – today took part in the Broxburn heat of the annual Rotary Quiz.

The four of them were fantastic – sensible, confident and knowledgeable.   The team impressed and excited us all by winning the quiz – AND – because their score of 55 was the highest in West Lothian they also go through to the Area Final at St Francis Xavier School, Falkirk on May 19.  The winner of this round will compete in the National Final in Carluke on June 3.

We could not be more proud of our fantastic pupils.  Well done Team Pumphie.

P6 Blog

This week’s learning update comes from Lauren:

We have been working on our map skills for our rivers topic. We learned about contour lines and how to use them. We also learned how to use scale and made scale maps of our classroom for an Easter egg hunt.

In Golden Time today, some of us made a barn out of connecting shapes. We think it’s cool because we could tip it over without breaking it but it’s very warm! We could fit four people at a squash or two comfortably. What do you think?

BIG BUG CITY!

Big Bug City – Rooms available!

Over the last few weeks we have been working on building bug hotels and apartments for Big Bug City and are now looking for inhabitants. All the rooms are now furnished with a variety of natural materials including stones, bricks, bark, rolled up cardboard, pine cones, dried grass, hollow stems such as bamboo and twigs. We used a hand drill to make holes in the wood for ladybirds.

You will find Big Bug City on the cladded wall near the garden area of the playground. Here it is sheltered, and will hopefully provide a safe haven for lots of mini-beasts which will in turn help us learn about them.

We think it looks like the New York skyline. What a great place to live!

P6 Writing

Today, P6 have been using ambitious Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation (VCOP) to up-level boring sentences. Here are some examples:

Miai and Jed: As the sun woke up, the blue-eyed, little boy slowly shouted however nobody heard him.

Jessica and Ula: Suddenly, my far uncle Steve sneezed very loudly like a tornado with snot spiraling round!

Freya and Logan: The long nosed, evil witch chuckled and said, “Go wash the oven.”

Ewen and Jasmin: The lazy, skinny boy screamed, “Bravo!” although the team lost.

Ella and Edward: The old, tall boy shouted at his mum, “Can I have a sweet?” even though they had none left.

Mya and Katy: As it became dark, silently the baby bat ate lots of berries before dinner.

Hallie and Jay: Eventually the fluffy, white puppies were yelping for their mum, “Yelp, yelp, yelp!!”

Aiden: Out of the blue an evil witch laughed like a dying horse.

Katie and Iona: The small, skinny, slimy snake slithered slowly along.

Georgie and Matthew: The bright sun shone its light as the curtains magically opened.

Oskar and Lauren: Nastily the teacher screamed at the children.

Daniel and Katie: For no reason, the scary, green witch laughed with terror.

Euan and Lewis: Dreadfully, an enormous boy shouted at his mother because he couldn’t get it his way.

Our trip to Amazonia!

We had a fantastic trip to Amazonia where we got to experience what it would be like to be in a rainforest.  It was very hot and humid. There were lots of plants just like the ones we have been learning about. We also got a chance to see some of the animals and handle some that are found in the rainforest. There was a python called Evie, a gecko called Bubbles and a tarantula called Rose. We were very brave!

Primary 1/2

Primary 1/2 have been learning all about the human body as part of their Science and Health. We had fun putting the organs and bones onto the outline of the body and we wrote facts about the jobs parts of our body do.

Here are some of the things the pupils said about their learning this week:

Brooke: ‘The brain doesn’t just help you think; it sends messages to parts of your body to make you move.’

Lewis W.: ‘I learned about the lungs. They help you breathe.’

Olivia: ‘I liked the Big Maths Beat that test.’

Ephi: ‘I learned names for your family in French.’

Ruby: ‘The ribcage protects your lungs and your heart.’

Emily: ‘I liked using Numicon. I put a little piece onto a big piece to find the difference between numbers.’

P1 Learning Blog

This week P1 have been learning:
