P 2 / 3 Weekly Blog

Last week we enjoyed lots of talks from parents who came in to tell us about their jobs. We met Mr Mellor who talked to us about being a Head Chef, Mr Fish told us all about being a fire fighter, Sarah Jane told us all about being an archeologist. We also had a talk from Kelly who is a hairdresser. We learned lots of things about the world of work and it has given us some ideas

about what we would like to do when we are older.

This week we have been making the most of the good weather by taking our learning outdoors. We practised giving and following directions in French by playing games outside and made links to maths by using compass points.

We also had lots of fun speaking to our visitors for DYW week. We got to meet a nurse, a head chef, a brick layer, a motorbike builder, a marketing student, a music instructor and an Autism support worker.

Gardening Help Needed – 9 June from 11am onwards.

As you know, as a school we have been working hard this year on developing our outdoor space to make our school look and work better.  All pupils benefit immensely from exploring, playing, learning and developing in the outdoors.
As we are nearing the end of the school year there are a number of jobs in the garden we want to get finished before the long break and we need your help,
On Friday 9 June we want families to join us in getting some jobs finished in the garden, including building a compost bin and painting the shed.  We would start from about 11am and pupils can join in when they finish school.
I really hope you can find some time to help out, please let us know if you can make it, many thanks.

As part of our Community Project we looked at the area around the school to see what was there. We saw the new houses being built, the orchard, the big field where we have sports day and the BMX track. We developed our skills in mapping by drawing a map of the area around the school.

Primary 5

This week, Primary 5 made some explosive discoveries!

In teams, we had made model volcanoes with Miss Mulholland. Next, we had to put on our Science hats and do some investigating – which combinations of materials (such as Mentos, cola, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid) would create the most explosive chemical reaction?

We worked in teams to test different combinations and then fed back to the rest of the class. It seemed the most effective combination was vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. So, we prepared our volcanoes for the imminent explosions and added a touch of food colouring to make the liquid more ‘lava like’. Here are some of our explosions below.

We are looking forward to seeing what our next mini-project with Miss Mulholland will be!

Until next time…

Goodbye Chicks!

Primary 1 said goodbye to the baby chicks this morning. They are now going to live on a farm. It has been great fun having them in our classroom and seeing them grow and change. It has helped us learn a lot about the life cycle of a chicken.

Jack: I liked when they got excited when we put the food in.

Ruby: I got to give the chicks fresh water.

Finlay: They made me laugh when they jumped on the bowl.
