HT Message

I am writing to inform you that I have accepted the post of acting Head Teacher at East Calder Primary School. This is a seconded position for 18 months and I will be taking up the post following the October break.

My acting replacement will be appointed as soon as possible and I will keep you informed of any developments.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for your kindness and support over the past three years, it has been a privilege to have worked with such dedicated, warm and caring pupils, families and staff and I know that the school is in a good place to continue its learning journey.

As I mentioned, this is a seconded position and therefore there is every possibility that I may return to PUSCPS in the future.

Many thanks and warm regards,

Steven Eagleson
Headteacher

Club Wild Veg Sale

We hope you’ve noticed how amazingly the vegetables in our school garden have grown.  they are all ready to be harvested and club Wild with Ms Young and Sarah-Jane will get picking this week.

Next Monday (2nd October) the Club Wild pupils will be at the gate selling the produce for their group funds.  Please stop and have a look, chat to the kids about the veg and buy some delicious home (or rather school)-grown veg for supper.

P3 Blog

Mrs Cullum is very happy to be back with Primary 3! Today, we reflected on our learning by telling Mrs Cullum what we had learned over the past couple of weeks. Here are some of the things we told her about:

Maths – we have been learning about before and after numbers, as well as talking about tens and units. Today the squares and rectangles took this even further by learning about hundreds.

Health and Wellbeing – we learnt about different feelings and how to recognise them. We really enjoyed our first Roots of Empathy family visit!

Social Studies – in our Victorian topic we have been comparing the life of a child today to that of a child in the Victorian era. We learned about Victorian workhouses and what life was like there.

Art – we continued practising how to create a self-portrait. This time we used pastels and linked with our learning in HWB by creating self-portraits showing different emotions.

Inspirational Maths Week!

We did a variety of things during Inspirational Maths Week. We watched some videos from the Youcubed website which helped us approach maths with a growth maths set. It also explained to us that you don’t have to be fast to be good at maths!

We also learned to make maths more visual. We created posters to show our learning on 7 digit numbers. We did a lot of problem solving. In one of the tasks we had to use four fours and all of the operations to make the numbers between 1 and 20.

The four lots of four worksheet. Can you make all the numbers to 20?

Fantastic Fundraisers!

We are so proud of Rosa and Darcy.  Over the weekend they decided to raise money for the school by making and selling slime.  Rosa told me the recipe and it is very complicated!  The girls were amazing role-models and fantastic entrepreneurs, raising £66!  Well done girls – be very proud of yourselves as responsible citizens and contributors.

Primary 2

Primary 2 have had a very exciting (and confusing) few weeks!

While we were ‘Daily Mile-ing’ one afternoon, a mysterious package was left on Miss McLaughlin’s chair. Inside, were some bones and a set of footprints!

We made guesses about where we thought the bones came from – alligators, lions, dinosaurs… But we still had no idea who sent them!

A few days later we received a letter. The bones (from a dinosaur!) were from a famous paleontologist called Mary Anning! We learned about her exciting life and with the help of Sarah-Jane, more about what a paleontologist does.

Mary Anning wanted US to become paleontologists too! So, we drew ourselves in full dig-worthy gear and sent the pictures back to her. Little did we know about the surprise that was waiting for us on Wednesday!

We now have our own ‘Dino Den’, where we can dig for bones, use the microscope and learn more about different types of dinosaurs! We also spent this week drawing detailed pictures of the bones and using our maths skills to measure/weigh them and find their area.

Check in with us to see what Mary’s next challenge is!

Until then…

Primary 7

This week we were playing Benchball boys against girls and we have to pass five times before we can shoot. The first score was 0-0 then the second game was 5-0 and the third game was 6-1. Then the last game was 0-0.  Also this week we were learning about factors, multiples and prime numbers. Prime numbers are when you can only divide it by itself or one. We also wrote an evacuee letter from World War two to our parents to let them know how we were feeling and how we got there because we were evacuated from our homes. With Miss Cave we were learning about internet safety. We wrote a letter to Ahmet to tell him about the dangers he was putting himself and others in.

Today Robert and Susan Comrie came in to talk to us about their work with the charity Friends of Magale which you have been helping us support in school for several years. The RRS Magale reps (pictured) presented Mr and Mrs Comrie with our most recent cheque for £365.  We have a number of fund-raising events planned this session which the RRS Magale committee will help plan.

Ross Logan our Active Sports coordinator came in to speak to us about lunchtime and after school sports clubs.  there are vacancies in all clubs and letters have already gone home.  Mrs Birrell at the office can provide new forms if required.  The Active sports clubs cost money, if this is a barrier to participation for your family, please speak to us at school and we can help with the cost of this.

Congratulations to one of our P4 pupils for working hard at his Active Sports club last session.  One of our P5 girls (not pictured) was also presented with an award for great attitude and enthusiasm at club.

Congratulations to our winners of achievement certificates for this week.
