Primary Seven

Writing

This week we have been finishing of our own comic strips. We had to peer assess them to ensure that they included captions, relevant pictures, speech and thought bubbles.

Reading

We are very close to the end of our class novel ‘Varjak Paw’. Everyone wrote a prediction for the ending of the book. Some of us have been very close so far!

Maths

In maths, we were all really interested to learn more about how time zones work. We used maps to help us estimate the times across the world. We worked out which countries celebrate New Year before and after us in the UK.

Lots of us moved up a CLIC level today.

HWB

We had a big focus on respect this week. Jammin’ Andy came in to teach us new dances and we now have a special ‘kindness cup’ in the class where we can leave kind messages for our classmates.

Literacy

Literacy has been a little bit different this week as we have been writing, reading and listening in Scots. We are preparing to perform a very special dance for you all and we have had to follow the steps to the dance in Scots words.  We played a fun game of  ‘Simon Says’ in Scots and learned lots of new vocabulary. In writing we had to add the speech, thought and caption text to ‘The Broons or and ‘Oor Wullie’ comic strip.  We are looking forward to creating our own next week.

Numeracy

In maths everyone has been focusing on the topic ‘Time’.  Most of us are very confident using 24 hour time so we have started trying to solve time problems using different types of timetables.  James, Finlay C, Finlay B and Kristinna got 10/10 for their CLIC challenge after a long break away from completing one.  Well done! I’m looking forward to more people with full marks next week.

Expressive Arts

Our focus for Scots week is Scottish solo artists or Groups.   We researched some Scottish figures and created factfiles about them.  Lots of people chose Calvin Harris or The Proclaimers.  We have been listening to a selection of music from Scottish singers and groups then we talked about how we felt about the music.

Scots Homework for P6 and P7

Mr Eagleson has set special homework for Primary 6 and 7 pupils. This homework is to find out what the Scots words in Auld Lang Syne mean in English. Some of the words are trickier because they are rarely used these days.

Good luck (or should that be guid luck!).

Some Primary 7 Reflections from last week…

Sorry it’s late P7.  Miss McLennan has ‘Christmas brain’ …

“This week I learnt about Christmas history with Mrs Hull.  Mary wears blue.  In P.E I was playing football to remember the WW1 Christmas Truce”.

In Expressive Arts I was making a winter scene and I enjoyed it a lot as I got to let my artistic skills out”.

“In P.E we had a football tournament to remember the Christmas Truce.  Two of the subjects crossed over.  They are P.E and Social Studies (History)”.

“In Maths we have been learning about the perimeter.  This has a real life link to building”.

“We had our football Truce match and I’m getting better at scoring goals”.

“In topic we are making maps to show where our group attractions are in Edinburgh”.

“In music it was Lauryn’s last week so we were shown how to set everything up independently”.

Football Remembers

We’re sure that most of you came to the P7 assembly and have perhaps watched the Sainsbury Christmas advert.  You may well know some of the history of the Christmas Truce.

In the first months of the First World War, soldiers fighting in the trenches around Ypres held a truce.  Over the Christmas period they set aside their weapons and met in ‘No-man’s Land’.  Some of them played football.

Today, P7 took part in a football tournament to remember and feel part of the First World War Centenary.

Well done Primary 7.

A taste of winter from P7 …

A Winter Scene

It was a cold night and the snow was shining on the ground.  The buildings lights were shining while the river was frozen below. The trees were covered in ice.  You can hear the cars and you can touch the fluffy snow.  You also can taste cooked chestnuts and see the dark sky and the tall buildings.

By Craig, P7

The lights were on, there was nothing but candle light dying slowly as the terrain got darker and the sky changed colour into romantic pink. It was bitterly cold outside, and you can smell the ginger cake as well as cookies and roasted chestnuts. At night time you can hear owls and Christmas carols. You can see the snowmen being created by the merry, joyful children. You see the city, the slush and the angry, strong men digging out their covered, snow white cars from the brown, awful snowy grounds of the city. It was a marvellous sight, the house was next to an enormous ever green forest – half empty. It grew the best trees ever, the empty skies of the country felt as if it were magic. You could feel the snow against your freezing feet. It felt like a thousand knives digging into you. You could taste the hot cocoa going down your throat as you sit near the everlasting fire.

By Molly, P7

As the steam flew up from the chimney, the smooth, white sheet of snow was changing colour, white to black. It smelt like roasting chestnuts alongside the taste of hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows. Yummy! As the sun was setting, the wolves were howling at the full, corn moon.  There were engines roaring in the slushy snow.

Primary 7 News

This week in Maths most of us really enjoyed learning about coordinates as it was quite a challenge! You could start to predict what the next coordinate might be because it started looking like a picture.

A good tip to remember the order for coordinates is:  ‘Along the coridoor and up the stairs.  Numbers on the line and not the squares’.

Lots of us enjoyed visiting Broxburn Academy last night especially the Home Economics taster session.  Some of last years P7s shared some of their recipes.

In the guidance department some S1s talked about settling into high school and guidance and support we could get.  They said the homework diary really helps.

In Writing we continued a story called ‘The Cave of Dur’ .  It was really good as we could end it in any way.  We trying to use a range of VCOP particulary openers ending in ed, ly and ing.

In P.E we enjoyed basketball with Grant as some activities were challenging but fun.  We were shooting and practising jump stops.
