P5 are using Didbook

P5 have been increasing their use of Didbook.  This is an online space for recording and reflecting on learning.  Here is an example of what it looks like and a short entry from Jay in P5:

We will keep you updated on how we are using this later in the term.

P5 – P7 have all been given logins for Didbook and can access this from home.

Term 4 Learning Overviews

Each term, teachers create a learning overview.  This is sent home with each child and a copy can be found here.  These are valuable sources of information to allow you to help your child at home with their learning.  Communication between home and school is a central part of making a difference for all children.

The art of Chinese paper cutting has been prized for many thousands of years. Paper cuts are used for decoration, given as gifts, and are regarded as lucky. Traditional paper cuts often showed celebrations, weddings and feasts, but now all sorts of motifs are used. The children in P7 have been using their line drawing and cutting skills to create Chinese Paper Cut artwork. Here are some of their designs.

The children also used their drawing and cutting skills to create temples. They blended chalk pastels to create a sunset background.

This week the pupils in P7 took part in the Wind Power Challenge. Their task was to design and make a simple wind turbine capable of lifting a cup off the floor to bench height.

What do you think happened when the designs were put to the test?

Primary 7

This week we have been working on fractions of a quantity and equivalent fractions.

In French, the children have been completing a crossword based on French words associated with families.

In Science, the children have been working in groups on their new animal discovery. The children explored and discussed animal adaptation cards to discover how animals have adapted to suit their environment.   They were then given the task to create a new species of animal that has adapted to suit the local/school environment.

In P.E. this week the children enjoyed learning ball skills in Futsal.

Well done to Cameron, Victor and Paul who were our finalists in the Scots poetry recitals. Congratulations to Paul who was chosen to recite the poem at our Scots assembly.

This term we have been learning about WWII. The children have researched information about key events in WWII to complete a class scrapbook as well as researching leaders involved with WWII as a homework task to be shared with their peers. Key events were also explored in order to compare and contrast the impact on individuals and families during WWII with present day living.

On the last day of term the children received a presentation about the Holocaust from Lucia and Lewis from St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston. Lucia and Lewis have recently returned from a trip to Krakow as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. They were selected by their school to attend the one day trip which is run by the Holocaust Educational Trust. As part of their next steps towards becoming Lessons from Auschwitz Ambassadors, they have delivered their presentation to several P7 classes at St Margaret’s Academy, our own P7 class and will continue to present to other P7 classes. The children were a super audience who were really engaged in the presentation and asked lots of questions to deepen their understanding of the Holocaust.

Primary 7 made the decision about their prom theme just before the holidays.  It was a difficult decision with so many great ideas on the board.

We finally got it down to 4 choices and had a class vote.

The theme we have chosen is ‘The Oscars’.

We would be really grateful if anyone who has any decorations that match this theme could let us know.   We are going to have a busy term making things and  planning for our special evening.

P7 have been learning about the history of the First Chinese Emperor and his Terraccotta Warriors.  We are using this context to improve our art skills.  We focused on line and shape this week to begin detailed pencil drawings of the Warriors. Next week we are going to look at form when we create 3D models using clay.

P7 started their class presentations this week.  Ellie, Boyd and Jamie-lee started us off with very confident and clear talks.  They were peer-assessed by 3 classmates each and self assessed their own performance.

In writing, we have been writing a discussion text about zoos.   We found that some of us had very strong arguments for and against zoos.  We wrote an introduction and started a for or against paragraph.  We are going to finish next week with the opposite view and our own opinions.  We will try to post some good examples on here.

We are all really excited about our trip the next again week to The Risk Factory.  I wonder what we will learn as it has been top secret in previous years!

After moving tables, we all created new table signs incorporating a symbol that represents each person at the table.  We have new Class Dojo buttons for each of our tables and hope to win lots of points.

Have a good weekend

P7 and Miss McLennan
