We know how to keep safe with electricity!

On Wednesday James from Scottish Power came to our school to talk to each class about electricity.  He told us all about electric cables and how we can stay safe with switches, plugs and power boxes.

Here are some facts we remembered:

  • Plugs have 230 volts in them.
  • We should switch off switches to help us keep safe.
  • Trains take 1 mile to stop.
  • There were 3 cables the orange one was for the garden, the black one is for your TV and the white one is for the kitchen.
  • Insulators are materials like rubber that electricity can’t travel through.
  • It can travel through conductors.
  • Power boxes are extremely dangerous and we shouldn’t go near them.

We got to hold 2 different big electricity cables. James had a black crow with a yellow nose called Sparky to help teach the little classes about being safe.

Primary 6

This week in Pumpherston and Uphall Station CPS we have been learning about children’s rights. Miss Martin has set the whole school on a job to make name collages because it shows everyone that they have the right to a name. Also we have been making little paper girls and boys. Then Miss Martin is going to display them all over the school.

Yesterday we had an assembly about children’s rights and all the classes had to do a show and tell.  Primary 6 decided to talk about wants and needs these are some of them. The needs are clean water, nutritious food, decent shelter and medical care. The wants were laptop, pet, phone, holiday, games and computer stations.

Primary 6

This week in P6 there has been lots of learning going on. We have been working in our topic groups to make a  model of the Titanic. The parts of it that we’ve been making are:  the funnels, the decking, the hull and the sea.

In writing we have been writing settings for stories and trying to guess other peoples. We really all enjoyed our writing this week because we had  to guess each others settings.

We were given our tickets for the Titanic in drama.  Some people had first class tickets, others second and third.

In assembly we where thinking about consideration of others and Rights week after the holiday.

Everyone dressed inside out today to raise money for UNICEF!  We had to spell our words forwards and backwards for our spelling check-up!

We hope everyone has a good long weekend!

Primary 6

Everyone has been busy this week rehearsing for our Scots afternoon. I think you’ll agree it was worth all the hard work! Primary 6 poets were excellent and a special well done to Ellie Hamilton and Amy Barnett for their recitals of ‘Bingo’ and ‘Oor New School’ on the day.

Scot’s Afternoon

This week saw our very successful Scot’s afternoon for the senior citizens of Pumpherston and Uphall Station as well as many of our parents and grandparents.  The children all worked hard to learn a selection of Scot’s poems and a several traditional scot’s songs and P5 learned a dance, which they performed with great enthusiasm.  The afternoon was a great success and the audience appeared to enjoy it thoroughly.

UNICEF Day for Change

We will be supporting UNICEF’s Day for Change next Friday by having an Inside Out Day.   Children can come to school on Friday 8th February wearing their clothes inside out!  In return children are asked to bring a donation of 50p to help supprt UNICEF’s vital work.

Primary 6

Last week we started badminton in P.E. with Mrs Pender.  We performed our fitness routines to P4 too, it was great fun.

For reading the blue group created good questions and the red reading group made persuasive leaflets.

To finish our Body, Bones and Blood topic we made line graphs to see who had the smallest bones.  Each group had a different bone to gather data on.

In writing we created our own characters.  We had to make them seem real by adding action, speech and feelings.

We are all looking forward to starting our new topic next week – Titanic!

Remember to keep practising your Scots poem for Monday!

Primary 6

Primary 6 have been learning all about bodies, bones and blood.  We measured different bones in our bodies, recorded the measurements and we are going to make a line graph using the data.  We made a model of the heart using plastic bottles, straws, balloons, tape, food colouring and water.  It showed us how the heart pumps blood.

In reading this week we all started new books in our groups.  Two groups are reading Roald Dahl and the other Michael Morpurgo.

In PE, we have been creating our own fitness routine to perform and teach Primary 4.  We worked well in our teams.
