Primary 6 – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

What a week! It has been another busy old week in Primary 6. Here are a few of the things that we have been learning about.

Maths/Modern Languages

We have been busy collecting information about attitudes towards Modern Languages learning. We have collected answers from all classes and are still busy putting this information into spreadsheets so that we can make graphs. The reason that we are collecting this information is so that we can apply for money to buy iPads, which would be used to enhance learning in Modern Languages. We really hope that the information we collect is good enough!

Christmas Party!

We had a brilliant time at the upper school Christmas party – lots of dancing, games and winners. Special thanks go to Miss Heatherill for purchasing refreshments, Mrs Ross for purchasing biscuits, our fantastic team of Pupil Support Workers for laying out the feast, P4-7 teachers and to Mr Eagleson for organising. All pupils were well behaved and smiling!

Golden Time Treat

It was the Golden Time treat this week – most of the class really enjoyed watching Nativity 2 – thanks to Miss Baillie for organising this treat for us. Those of us who didn’t make it will be trying extra hard to keep all our Golden Time next term.

Writing

This week we were inspired by a lego image. We used this image to type stories straight onto Glow.

If you want to write a story inspired by this image you can log into Glow and go to this link to share a story or your own.

Glow Scotland

This week your child will bring home their Glow username and password. The weblink for Glow is https://glow.rmunify.com/ and it can be accessed through any device with an internet connection. As well as lots of educational resources, Glow provides access to your child’s school email account and Office 365. This allows your child to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint from anywhere with an internet connection, even if it is not installed on their device.

Once your child has successfully logged in they will be able to access the Apps available (including Brainpop and TigTag World). They will also be able to access the School Site by clicking on the App as pictured below.

At the moment the School Site is being developed and will contain more content as time goes on.

When your child logs on for the first time they will need to agree to the following Glow Community Rules:

Be Secure

Always keep your Glow password to yourself.

Always sign out of Glow when no longer using it.

Be Polite

Always treat others with respect.

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other other content that is inappropriate or likely to cause harm or offence to others.

Be Safe

Always remember to be careful when communicating over the internet – other users may not be who they seem.

Don’t share your personal details with other people.

Never agree to meet someone in person who you have only met on the internet unless accompanied by a parent, carer or other known and trusted adult.

Speak to an adult immediately if you see a message, image or anything else on the internet that concerns you

Be Legal

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other other content that you do not have permission to use.

Be Responsible

Always be mindful that once you put something online, that information may be beyond your control.

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other content online that you would not wish other learners, teachers, or parents to see.

Remember that anything you do can be traced back to you.

If you misuse Glow, this can be reported to your school.

Upper school pupils should have already accessed Glow in school and tried out a few of the resources available. If your child has any problems accessing Glow they should inform their class teacher or Miss Anderson.

Further information about Glow is available Here.

Primary 6 – Get Glowing

This week Primary 6 have been Glowing. This means that we have used Glow at least once. Most of us typed up a letter to send to the Civic Centre and then saved this letter on Glow. Miss Anderson is still working out all the ways that we can use Glow to support our learning and we will be working on this all the way up to Christmas and then into 2015.

In Reading this week we all either found long and short sentences or wrote a book review (some of us did both). We talked about how authors use sentences of varying lengths for effect.

We have talked a lot about chance in Maths. Here are a few pictures that share some of our thoughts. You will notice that there are lots of colours used – ask us why each colour was used.

We have continued to enjoy Dance, and have now finished our Street Dance topic. Next up is Indian Dancing, can’t wait!

We still have lots of work to get through in the next few weeks!

Primary 6 become Advertising Execs

It has been another quick week in Primary 6 – perhaps we are so engaged with our learning. Here are a few highlights:

Health & Wellbeing

We are still learning about different substances. This week we were learning more about alcohol and the different ways that alcohol companies advertise their products. We talked about adverts that appeal to children and young adults, and why there needs to be rules against this. We talked about adverts that make alcohol seem fun and exciting and why it is important to protect children and teenagers from being influenced by these adverts.

Miss Anderson set us a challenge to advertise a new type of alcohol called Bam. Bam is a sugary, sweet cocktail that is bright pink and has a yellow label. We had to decide what group of people we should advertise to. Most of us decided that this product should be aimed at young adults aged between 20 and 26. Here are a few of our adverts.

There is not a dry eye in the class this afternoon because we performed our assembly to say thank-you and goodbye to Miss Speirs. we really are going to miss her LOADS! We did have fun shaking it off though.

Our footballers are looking forward to the match this afternoon.

Class Dojo – Emma C is still our high scorer with 71 points. This week our high scorers was Nia with 15 points. Nia became the first person in the whole country to add her work to the National Glow Gallery. Here is her poster.

We hope everyone has a good, and safe, weekend. Hopefully everyone will have stopped crying by Monday!

Primary 6 are ‘locky’

It’s been a week that has just whizzed by! We can’t believe that it is the weekend already. Here is a summary of our learning for the week.

Dance

This week we have been learning how to ‘lock’ in dance. This is a basic move for all kinds of street dance, but it is harder than it looks. We are all participating well in dance learning and becoming great street dancers.

Music

This week we have continued to work with Lauren to develop our musicality. This week we were using small electronic instruments and Yann told us more about hardware hacking. We also became songwriters, writing songs about Livingston. One group have recorded their song and it will be added to the blog (if Miss Anderson can work out how!).

Writing

We had a free choice in writing this week. Lots of us decided to include a spooky setting. We are all working towards our personal targets and it is almost time to set new targets.

Reading

We all had different tasks this week. The Jaguars completed a character profile, the Tigers a labelled location from the text, the Panthers looked for interesting words to define and the Lions designed and created a birthday card for a character in their novel.

Maths

This week we completed games on Education City, which required us to log in and find our games. It wasn’t too difficult and we will do this again in Maths and English.

We have lots more to learn next week. Miss Anderson and Mrs McCulloch will be doing a wee day swap so Miss Anderson will be in class on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs McCulloch will be in on wednesday.

We have lots of high scorers for Class Dojo this week! Nia, Carys, Chloe, Ellie and Emma S all have 15 points. Overall Emma C has the most points with 61.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Primary 6 – what do ‘eye’ see?

It’s been another busy week in Primary 6 – here is a summary of some of our learning.

Maths

We have continued to learn about area this week. We have drawn rectangles of specific sizes, using times tables to calculate the area. We really need to know our times tables and Miss Anderson has found a few songs to help us remember. We will be listening to them next week as well. One of our tasks was to design a zoo. Brandon’s work was chosen as our WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) as he had remembered to include an entrance, exit and car park. All the enclosures were a good size for the type of animal that would live in them. Well done Brandon.

Literacy

We have been writing imaginative stories, set in a school. We had a few stories set in our school but lots were set elsewhere (including a school that can teleport!). We were all trying to include speech marks this week (with partner punctuation) and we were all working towards our personal targets. Miss Anderson is really enjoying reading all our stories.

Social Studies

We are still learning about Livingston – this week we started to work in groups to research housing, work, leisure and tourism. Hope fully we will be able to update you with more info next week. In the meantime, here is a photo of the class map we created last week.

Class Map of Livingston

Science

This week we started to learn more about eyes and sight. We learned that out retina actually sees things upside down and our brain turns it around. We talked about how clever our brains are!

Other

Children in Need was great fun – the school raised lots of money to help this great cause. Emma C is still our Dojo high scorer (with 50 points) and it was a tie for our weekly high scorers; Ann, Ellie and Emma S. Keep up all the hard work!

Primary 6 – Livi Living

Last week we finished our large map of Livingston for our wall display. We used printed a large map and cut it into 12 sections. Then we worked with a partner to recreate the map, on a much larger scale. We will add a photo of this for you all to see.

We also continued to learn about area. We are beginning to make the link between times tables and finding the area of rectangles and squares. We will continue to work on this and hope to get really speedy with our recall of times tables.

In Science we are going to be learning more about the human body. Last term we learned about the auditory system as part of our learning about sound. This term we will be learning about the digestive system and micro-organisms.

Emma C is our current Class Dojo champion with 44 points and Oktawia was our high scorer last week with 5.

Primary 6 have a short, but busy, week

Although we have only been in school for two and a half days we have been very, very busy.

On Wednesday we started our new topic Livi Living, which is all about Livingston. We created a class book with all the information and facts that we already know. A few of us drew maps of parts of Livingston that we know. We still need to create a cover for our book and would like suggestions for what we need to include on the cover.

In Maths we have been transferring our skills to create different versions of our names. We create symmetrical patterns and wrote our names using block letters, with a set area (52-62 cm2). This was great fun, Then we coloured in our names, using fractions to help. Most of us had to use rounding to decide how many squares to colour. Here is an example:

If your name took up 55cm2 and 1/4 of it to be blue then you would divide 55 by 4. This would give you an answer of 13.75. Because this is not a whole number you would round up and colour 14 squares. This means that 1/4 of 55cm2 is approximately 14cm2.

We can’t wait to find out what we will be learning next week…

Miss Anderson and P6

P6 – How do you treat your slave?

This term we have been learning about slavery in Scotland. We have worked in lots of different ways. Our Celebration of Learning is to create documentaries about slavery. Here are a few sneak peaks at what will be included in our documentaries…

Transportation of Slaves

Slaves were transported from Africa on ships. Many slaves travelled to the Caribbean where they worked on plantations. Fewer slaves travelled to Scotland, where they lived with their owners. Here are a few illustrations of slave ships. We used pencil to draw a slave ship and then used one colour of pastel for effect.

Life as a Slave in Scotland

We have taken part in lots of drama activities in order to learn more about the life of a slave. Here is a video that shows the way that a family would treat the slave that they ‘owned’. We have also included a conscience alley at the end.

P6 Drama

If you would like to see more videos of our learning, leave us a comment.

Primary 6 are Super Readers

This week Primary  6 have been doing lots of reading. We have been developing our fiction reading skills with Mrs McCulloch, reading Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. This book is set during WWII. With Miss Anderson we have been reading Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman. This book is set in lots of different historical times and features a time-travelling hot air balloon that was invented by a genius stegosaurus! We also are learning more about non-fiction books through our group reading. These non-fiction books cover a wide range of topics (from growing pumpkins to learning more about the Vikings). Finally we will also be reviewing the Scottish Book trust Awards shortlisted books – the first is called Pyrate Boy.
