P6 Blog

This week’s blog comes to you from Jasmin and Lauren…

This week we were making 3D umbrellas by folding paper like origami. We glued them to an A4 Spring background.

In PE with Mrs Cullum we have been learning how to bowl in cricket. This week we learned how to underarm bowl and played a game where we had to bowl to a partner and get the ball to bounce on a target.

In PE with Ms Pender we have been focusing on running and throwing for athletics. We played Tom and Jerry for running and had a throwing competition.

P6 have started Term 4 with real enthusiasm! So much so, in fact, that some chose to play Maths Champion during Golden Time for extra practice (see the photo below). We also had a(nother) tense head to head round against the teacher for Miai… who won! Well done, Miai!

P6 have also started off their final term by showing selflessness and thinking of others; Lewis, Jed, Miai and Ewen all decided to pass up their chance to be Star of the week so that someone else could have a shot. It is great to see P6s thinking of others like this.

This week’s learning update comes from Lauren:

We have been working on our map skills for our rivers topic. We learned about contour lines and how to use them. We also learned how to use scale and made scale maps of our classroom for an Easter egg hunt.

In Golden Time today, some of us made a barn out of connecting shapes. We think it’s cool because we could tip it over without breaking it but it’s very warm! We could fit four people at a squash or two comfortably. What do you think?

P6 Writing

Today, P6 have been using ambitious Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation (VCOP) to up-level boring sentences. Here are some examples:

Miai and Jed: As the sun woke up, the blue-eyed, little boy slowly shouted however nobody heard him.

Jessica and Ula: Suddenly, my far uncle Steve sneezed very loudly like a tornado with snot spiraling round!

Freya and Logan: The long nosed, evil witch chuckled and said, “Go wash the oven.”

Ewen and Jasmin: The lazy, skinny boy screamed, “Bravo!” although the team lost.

Ella and Edward: The old, tall boy shouted at his mum, “Can I have a sweet?” even though they had none left.

Mya and Katy: As it became dark, silently the baby bat ate lots of berries before dinner.

Hallie and Jay: Eventually the fluffy, white puppies were yelping for their mum, “Yelp, yelp, yelp!!”

Aiden: Out of the blue an evil witch laughed like a dying horse.

Katie and Iona: The small, skinny, slimy snake slithered slowly along.

Georgie and Matthew: The bright sun shone its light as the curtains magically opened.

Oskar and Lauren: Nastily the teacher screamed at the children.

Daniel and Katie: For no reason, the scary, green witch laughed with terror.

Euan and Lewis: Dreadfully, an enormous boy shouted at his mother because he couldn’t get it his way.

P6 River Models

P6 have been learning about rivers this term and this week we have been getting creative! First, we used clay to make 3D models showing the course of a river from source to mouth. We included features like valleys, tributaries, meanders, floodplains, levees, estuaries and deltas. Then we used a variety of instruments to make a sound story to depict a river’s course from source to mouth. Take a look at our models in the pictures below and see if you can identify some of the features of a river.

As part of our Fairtrade and Rights Respecting School focus week, P6 learnt about the difference between wants and needs and how they link to our rights. We looked at a day in the life of a typical Ugandan Primary School child (Magale is in Uganda) and thought about their wants and needs. We were able to see that although their wants would be very different, we all have the same needs. We then looked at a Fairtrade case study to see how Fairtrade can help families get what they need and how we can make a difference.

Hallie, Katie and Oskar are looking forward to sharing what we have learnt with the rest of the school in our assembly tomorrow. We think you might be surprised at how different a typical Ugandan school child’s day is to your own!

P6 Blog

Primary 6 have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe. We have talked about the importance of trust and how this can be built or broken, how peer pressure can affect us and how to stay safe when chatting online. We created informative posters with advice on how to stay safe and made links to our poetry focus in writing by creating acrostic poems.

P6 Weekly Blog

This week we have been using fractions in maths and have learnt how to change fractions to decimals and percentages. In health and well being we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe. We talked about trust and peer pressure and made acrostic poems to show our understanding. In our writing we have been analysing different types of poems and looking for rhythmic patterns, onomatopoeia, alliteration and personification.
