P6 Weekly Update

This week we have been putting the finishing touches towards our assembly – which will be next Wednesday 15th June 2022. We will be sharing our knowledge from our topic this term, Democracy and the Scottish Government.

In PE this week, we have been preparing for sports day alongside competing in our own mini ‘Wimbledon’ tournament. We were able to bring together all of our skills from the past 5 weeks and worked well as part of a team to compete against our classmates.

We added the finishing touches to our Queen’s Jubilee artwork. We hope you like them!

P6 Weekly Update

This week we have been learning how to explore character descriptions and consider how this indicates personality traits. We also looked into how to extract quotations and retrieve information from a novel or piece of text effectively. We used our class novel ‘Why the Whales Came’ by Michael Morpurgo to complete this task.

We looked into narrative voice, description, language and dialogue used to create an image of the Birdman in the readers head. We drew the Birdman based upon the descriptions given by the author and other characters in the novel, backing this up with direct quotations from the text to emphasise the way he is portrayed.

P6 Weekly Update

This week in Primary 6 we had a visit from Zoe Gordon who shared her knowledge of languages with us. She will be working with us over the coming weeks to further develop our knowledge of French and Spanish. This week we worked on getting to know Spain and basic Spanish greetings.

In Science, Mrs McJimpsey worked with us on our knowledge of forces. She challenged us to create a Tin Foil Boat which was able to float on water. We then had to add one penny at a time onto the boat, counting them as we went along to see how long it would take for the boat to sink. We really enjoyed this activity!

Today we have went over the Mini-Health and Wellbeing Champs application. We have been asked to think about if we would like to apply for this role which will go with us into P7. The applications will be handed out on Monday 16th May 2022 and must be returned by Monday 30th May 2022. This can be completed at home however we advise the children to complete this themselves.

Well done to our certificate winners for this week, Sophie-Rose and Finlay.

Primary 7 weekly update

It was lovely to be back with all our friends again.

We started a new Numeracy topic on volume. We have been learning how to read volume scales on beakers and jugs in millilitres and litres, working out problems with volume and we have begun learning how to calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids in cubic centimetres.

In literacy, we watched a short persuasive animation and tried to work out the message it was showing us. We then looked at the different devices the animator used to persuade us and discussed how effective these were.

In art, we started using the new drawing pencils we got at the end of last term. We learned how to draw a realistic mouth.

Have a great weekend everyone.

P6 Weekly Update

We had a great first week back after the Easter holiday. We returned from our holidays in good spirits and enjoyed sharing our news through a recount piece of writing. We self and peer assessed this piece of writing which allowed others to see what we had been up to.

We have been focusing on growth mindset this week where we were set mini challenges, under time constraints. These tasks lasted for 5 minutes and challenged our own mindsets. We created posters for around the classroom with positive quotes on them. These will be used by the whole class when they find a task difficult or overwhelming and need some help to overcome their negative feelings.

P6 Weekly Update

We have been learning what makes an effective summariser and predictor using our class novel to help us with this. We created a summary bubble and a prediction arrow.

We have been learning about the Circulatory system. We have been learning about how the system works and the role in which this plays in our human body. We investigated the heart and highlighted the importance of this in our body.

In Numeracy this week, we have been reinforcing our knowledge of division. We used the outdoor area to show off our knowledge and understanding.

We have been focusing on FRIENDSHIPS this week in HWB. We have discussed what is required to be a friend, what actions are expected in a friendship and the roles in which people can play as part of this.

P6 Weekly Update

Hello everyone,

Another busy week, so here is what we have been up to.

Literacy – We started the week by revisiting imperative verbs and recapping our knowledge of this through interactive stations. World Book Day 2022 was yesterday, where we were able to share our love of literacy and reading with the whole school and our class. We were given the opportunity to read for enjoyment, share our favourite stories with friends and show off our creativity. We were set a drawing challenge where we were asked to draw our favourite character from from a book of our choosing.

Numeracy – We have been focusing on squared numbers where we used our knowledge of multiplication to help us.

Maths – We have been developing our knowledge of information handling. We will be looking to develop this further over the coming weeks.

IDL/Topic – As part of our Human Body Systems topic, we have now moved on to investigate the purpose of the digestion system. This week we looked at the organs involved in this and will be looking into this further next week.

PE – We participated in a class Handball tournament, where we were asked to work collaboratively as a team, use positive language and bring together the skills we had learnt over previous weeks. We did a great job!

We also had pancakes on Tuesday for Shrove Tuesday! They were delicious!!

Have a lovely weekend.

P6 Weekly Update

Hi everyone,

During our short week back to school after the holidays,  we have completed lots of fun and engaging learning activities.

Literacy: We have been working on our ability to read for information through our use of skimming and scanning techniques. We looked further into how to summarise information from a chapter in our class novel, where we focused on picking key phrases/words from the text to show our understanding.

Numeracy: We have been developing our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. Mrs McConville began teaching us about perimeter and area this week.

Topic/IDL: We continued our topic of the Human Body – Body Systems where we looked further into the Skeletal system. We identified the key facts surrounding the Skeletal system and completed a task where we had to work collaboratively to name all of the bones in the body (this was tricky!).

Health and Wellbeing: We looked into gender stereotypes and ensuring that everyone is treated fairly and equally. We had many class discussions where we were able to listen to the opinion of others and express our own opinions.

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 6 Weekly Update

This week we completed our Scottish Contexts topic. We recited our Scottish poems in front of our peers, where two winners were chosen to perform in front of the whole school. We all did a great job and are so proud of our representatives!

In Numeracy, we have been working on adding and subtracting decimals using mental calculations and column sums/chimney sums/formal written method. We have grown in confidence in this across the week, where we were then able to answer and create our own word problem examples for our peers.

We began our new topic for the remainder of the term, where we will investigate Body Systems. We began this through sharing what we know as a whole class and coming up with questions we wanted to investigate across the coming weeks.

In Health and Wellbeing,  we looked into what a friendship and/or a relationship is, what makes us a good friend and how to maintain each of these. We collectively created a ‘P6 Friendship Soup’ which incorporated all of our ideas for maintaining positive relationships and friendships. This is now on display in our classroom as a daily reminder.

Have a lovely weekend!

P6 Weekly Update

This week we have been learning about Scottish Culture during our mini topic. We were introduced to Robert Burns and explored many aspects of his life using digital technology. We were asked to note down all of our information in a creative way and share this with the class. This topic allowed us to explore capital cities in Scotland which tied into places that Robert Burns visited.

During our mini topic, we have been asked to investigate The Scottish Colourists. We have chosen one of the famous Scottish Colourists and completed a fact file all about them. We were then asked to re-create a famous piece of artwork by John Peploe called Pink Roses, Chinese Vase.

We have completed a pencil drawing and will finish this using John Peploes’ favourite technique of oil painting. We will post pictures of these when they have been completed next week for you.
