Sports Day Feedback

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you to those who were able to join us yesterday for our School Sports Day. We are glad that so many of you could join us across our morning and afternoon sessions. We are looking to announce the winner of Sports Day tomorrow at assembly (14/6/24).

I would greatly appreciate any feedback about Sports Day yesterday. This will allow me to plan and organise next year’s event with input from parents, children and carers.

Friday Fun in P6

This morning we developed our knowledge of angles using active maths inspired activities. We used masking tape to create different types of angles on our classroom tables. We continued to develop our confidence of using protractors during this activity.

We had to identify the different types of angles we had been learning about by stating the accurate degree and the type of angle (right angle, acute, straight line or obtuse).

We worked in different groups to ensure we achieved success and developed our confidence.

P6 Cross Country

Libby from Active Schools ran a Cross Country event for us today. We worked hard both individually and collectively to ensure the event was a success. We all received a participation medal and proudly showed them off for the remainder of the day.

P6 Visitor

Today we received a visit from Show Racism the Red Card to further enhance our knowledge of racism and discrimination. Kaela ran an insightful workshop for our P6 pupils where they were able to explore challenging topics in a safe space.

We want to say a massive thank you to Kaela for her visit and knowledge!

P5 and P6 Amazon/Smallpeice Trust STEM Day

Today our Primary 5 and 6 classes enjoyed a full day STEM session run by The Smallpeice Trust, kindly funded by Amazon. We completed lots of fun activities to give us a taster of what it would be like to be an engineer. We learned about Engineering as a career and the jobs available in the world of work.

We started our day with a code breaking task. We worked with our teams to use our prior knowledge of skip counting, multiplication and sequencing to crack the secret code.

Next, we learned all about the mechanics behind rockets. We were tasked with designing an economical robot and had to work out the cost of our product before building and testing it.

Throughout the day we worked towards completing our STEM certificates by earning stickers for speaking, staying positive, teamwork, problem solving, creativity, aiming high, leadership and listening.

After lunch, we learned about autonomous vehicles. We created maps and used iPads to program a Sphero. We had to meet a specific criteria and direct the robots to follow our instructions.

We also had a virtual visit from  Amazon where we learned about job opportunities and the role of engineers at Amazon.

We are so grateful for such a fantastic experience and we have loved learning through STEM challenges today.

Girls Football Festival Winners!

Our Primary 6 girls attended a girls only football festival this afternoon at Deans Community High School.

There were 6 teams taking part in the festival from across West Lothian. We played 5 games in total and ended up joint winners with Bankton Primary School.

The girls were a credit to the school and themselves! Thank you to everyone at Deans Community High School for organising the event.

Primary 6 Weekly Update

This week in Primary 6 we have been learning more about our topic for this term: The Human Body Systems. We were learning about the Skeletal System and the main roles it plays within the body.

We were set a challenge where we had to create a support for a tennis ball which would hold it high above a table. We discussed the different features of structures, what would work well and what would not offer enough support. This was to replicate the role that the skeleton plays in supporting the body.

Below were our two winners who were rated by their classmates as having a 10/10 rating!

P6 Classroom Learning Update

Today in class we have been learning about Hinduism. We explored the festival of Diwali to find out more about how Hindu’s celebrate, why they celebrate and create our very own Diva Lamps.

We will wait for them to dry overnight and then we will decorate them tomorrow.

Nalan was our expert today, showing us examples of real Diva Lamps alongside giving us tips on how to create our own.

Talk Money Week Home Challenge

Talk Money Week is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with events and activities across the UK which help people have more open conversations about their money – from pocket money to pensions – and continue these conversations year-round.

The ‘Magic Mathematicians’ Pupil Voice Group would like to invite you to take part in our Talk Money Challenge.  We would like you to think about how we keep money safe.

We would like you to design and create one of the following:

  • money container
  • wallet
  • purse

You can use recycled junk or fabric.

Please bring in your finished design by Friday 10th November.

The Magic Mathematicians will choose their favourite designs from the following age categories:

  • P1-P2
  • P3-P4
  • P5-P7

Primary 6 Weekly Update

Maths Week Scotland

This week in Primary 6 we have been using digital technology to further enhance our learning of Information Handling. We created different types of graphs and simple pie charts to show our knowledge gained this term. We collected our own data based upon our own interests, collated our findings in a table which was then displayed in a way of our choosing.
