This week, Primary 3 started their new topic, Farming. We had received an email from the Farm Association, telling us about their schools programme and that they were keen to teach young people about farming.
We brainstormed what we knew about farms and farming first of all. Then we learned about the main farming types that take place across Scotland: cattle & sheep, dairy, poultry, cereal and crop. We then used a map and key to highlight where these types of farming take place in Scotland. We found that cattle & sheep farming is the most popular type. #successfullearners

This week, Primary 3 were completing tasks linked to our Scots’ focus – to find out more about tartan and the weaving process.
We discussed why we thought tartan had been invented and learned that it had begun its use as a way of identifying different clans. We then learned that tartan was made by weaving different coloured threads together and created our own tartan designs. After, we used our designs to create tartan-themed outfits. This week, our ‘Supermarket Sweep’ topic continued by looking at Advent. We discussed why we thought Advent was celebrated and why we might use Advent calendars.
We also explored the concept of a ‘reverse’ Advent calender, promoted by the West Lothian Food Bank. Instead of taking an item out every day, people are encouraged to put a food item into a box each day. The items are then collected and given to families who are in need of a little extra help at Christmas time. We created our own ‘reverse’ Advent calendar in pairs, using items we might find at Marks & Spencer (including Percy Pigs, of course!). You can see some of our work below. #responsiblecitizens

This week, Primary 3 began their new, Christmas-themed topic, ‘Supermarket Sweep’!
We discussed how supermarkets like Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s get ready for the festive season (e.g. designing Christmas cards, organising Black Friday sales, decorating the store, printing Christmas dinner menus) and suggested different roles that staff might need to take on. We then recorded our ideas on paper, which you can see below. #effectivecontributors

For this block of Science, Primary 3 will be learning about water.
This week, we brainstormed everything that we knew about water (e.g. it is wet, used for drinking and washing, comes in the form of rain, it can change into ice and steam). Then, Miss McLaughlin set us a challenge – there were little plastic people trapped inside a block of ice! We had to work in teams to find the best way to free them.
