GRAB A SHOVEL – SPREAD SOME GRIT – 5 MINUTES TO A SAFER PLAYGROUND

boss-grit-bin

As you are aware our playground is icy.  Pupils love this and it is great fun.  In school we encourage pupils to explore different aspects of the world around them safely.

Unfortunately this is obviously not totally safe, and the enthusiasm for ice wears off, even with children, and they just want to run and play again.

West Lothian Council Policy is clear that a single path of entry is gritted to allow safe access to school but that playgrounds and other public spaces are not gritted as this would place an unreasonable demand on the facilities management workforce.

April Edwards, mum of a P1 pupil, and a member of your Parent Council approached me with a novel solution which I think is a great idea and could work – with your support.

On Monday we will receive a delivery of grit-salt which will be in the playground.  There will be a selection of shovels in the shed and some High-Visibility reflective vests.  In order to all work together to solve the problem, which so many of you have discussed with me, we need to muck in – grab a shovel – and spread the grit on the playground.

Five minutes of your time in the morning, or after school would see us working together as a community to fix a problem. What a great idea, and a great chance to be involved in supporting your school and all of our children.  I hope you agree that this is a practical, community-based solution to a problem which we are not able to fix alone.

Winter Conditions

The playground is, naturally, quite icy at the moment.  The pupils are loving it and we are enjoying seeing them have so much fun in the outdoors.

Walking, sliding and playing on icy pavements is a part of life, and there is a great deal of learning, fun and personal development that can come from pupils exploring the world in this way.

However, icy ground is obviously a greater fall hazard than normal.  We have spoken to all the children about “planning their own safety” and we would encourage you to do the same at home.  Ice can be great fun if we are sensible and careful when we use it.

Please speak to your children about how to stay safe on the ice.  Stopping children from playing on it isn’t the answer, they need to learn to manage this risk responsibly.

Our Values Champions

Last session you helped create a new set of Values for our school:  POSITIVE – UNDERSTANDING – SUPPORTS – CONFIDENT – PERSONALSUCCESS

To make the values a meaningful part of our school life, pupils need to understand and use them.  At Pumphie Pals last week, we made up character names to help us understand and use the values more.  P4 worked with Mr Eagleson to create the figures to go with each character, and here they are:

Families Learning Together 2

We had a great turnout again for our 2nd Families Learning Together session.  It’s such a great opportunity to share learning with your child and hear how enthusiastic they are about their learning.

We have FLT sessions throughout the year so there will hopefully be one which will fit with busy home schedules.

The next session is Monday 12 December at 5pm.

November Dress Down Friday

cin

Next Friday (25 November) is our monthly Dress Down for Charity day.  This month’s donations will be in support of BBC Children in Need.

The theme for this year is “Spot-tacular” and it would be great to see lots of spotty-dotty boys and girls (and adults).  If you choose to send in a donation we will send this to Children in Need to support some of the most vulnerable children in the UK and overseas.

New Blog Format

blog

Due to an update to the system, we have had to change the format of our blog.  The information is all still the same.

On the front page you will see a selection of the most recent posts in three columns similar to a magazine.  There are a number of drop down menus at the top with information on the school and links to each classes blog posts.

Please have a look around and enjoy all of the fantastic posts from the pupils.  Any comments on their learning is always appreciated by the pupils.
