Digital Internet Safety Challenge in P7

This afternoon we used the app Kahoot to assess what we knew about social media, we loved trying out this new website! We made up nicknames not giving away our identity and answered different questions.

Then we discussed that although most social media apps and online games are for over 13 and 16 year olds, it was important to think about how we stay safe online, if our parents or carers give us permission to use these apps.

Miss Burton set us a digital challenge with a difference – we weren’t allowed to use PowerPoint!

First of all we brainstormed all our top tips and then selected our top 5!

Some of us made a Sway using our glow log ins.

Some of us made videos using the green screen and edited them using iMovie.

Some of us made a poster using Word.

Primary 4 Internet Safety

In Primary 4 we used the Thinkuknow online resources to explore internet safety.  We watched the cartoons and discussed the choices that the characters made in a variety of situations where their choices caused their safety to be compromised.  We also explored internet safety from a Health and Wellbeing perspective, discussing the positive opportunities for learning and development, enjoyment and developing social connections and contrasting these with the effects on socialising, good sleep, diet and exercise.  This is aimed to encourage safe, positive choices and healthy behaviours and attitudes to their online activities.

Primary 1 Internet Safety

We are learning … about what the internet is and how we can stay safe while using it.

P1 talked about what we knew about the internet, how it worked and what it looked like. We found it very hard to describe it and lots of us thought it was a bit like electricity. We watched a video about it and were able to explain that:

  • it can be made of wires or wireless using satellites.
  • It can send messages across the world.
  • Phones, cars, computers, televisions all use it.

We heard a story about some children playing a computer game against each other when some things popped up on screen. We suggested that the children should ask a grown up if they weren’t sure. This is called asking permission and is a very important way to stay safe online.

Mrs McJimpsey was very impressed to hear lots of stories about times that P1 have asked for permission when using the internet.

Digital Directors Internet Safety Assembly

Our Digital Directors, led by Mrs McJimpsey, gave us a fabulous assembly on Friday.  There were lots of important messages about how to stay safe online.  All pupils had spent the week learning about internet safety.  This week, the Digital Directors have set a special home learning task:

Create a way to share the important messages of staying safe online.  This can be in the form of:

-a poster made on paper

-a digital poster

-a video

If taking part, these should be handed in/emailed to wlpuscps@westlothian.org.uk  by Friday 15th February.

We look forward to seeing these.

Primary 3

What were we learning?

To explore activities linked to Safer Internet Day.

How would we know if we were successful?

  • We would be able to make safe choices when using the internet.
  • We would be able to offer advice to others about how to use the internet responsibly.

What did we do?

  • We completed the ‘Are you smart online?’ quiz to see how safe our choices were.
  • We watched episodes of the ‘SMART Crew’ to see what would happen if we made unsafe choices like accepting unknown requests or giving out personal details.
  • We also discussed the issue of ‘screen time’. We learned about how too much screen time can affect our bodies and the world around us.

Until next time…

P6’s Ten Top Tips for Staying Safe Online

As part of our Safer Internet Day focus, we have been discussing the importance of consent and caution when posting photographs and videos online.

We came up with our 10 top tips to help you stay safe online.

  1. Keep social media accounts private.
  2. Remember that you can change accounts to private at any time.
  3. Ask permission before sharing photographs/videos of anyone.
  4. Don’t share inappropriate photographs/videos – remember that you are responsible for anything you choose to share online, even if you didn’t create it.
  5. Don’t share personal information online.
  6. You can cover your face with an emoji or blur it out if you don’t want it to be shown in a photograph you share.
  7. Be careful who follows you online – make sure you know who someone is before you accept a follow/friend request.
  8. Remember that you can block anyone who you think is a stranger or who behaves in a way that you do not like.
  9. You may wish to have a public account that has no personal information and a private account that you use to share with friends.
  10. Delete anything that you no longer want online – this list might help you work out what is wise to keep online and what is not!
